The Anti-Selfie Stick movement gains a powerful new ally - Ben Carson!

Never thought I would say this once, let along twice*, but I agree with Ben Carson. Fuck selfie sticks.

*His comments on the South Carolina shooting were on-point.

Honestly, when it comes to stuff he's personally experienced he's pretty good. He talks sense on police brutality and gun control, but what else would you expect from someone who grew up like he did. Outside of that he's a nutter though.

I've never seen anyone in real life with a selfie stick and I also don't understand why anyone cares.

I went to the beach on vacation a few weeks ago and finally saw people taking pictures with the turtles using Selfie Sticks

It was ok. Im more annoyed by people filming non stop (sometimes using ipads) in stadiums and big concerts

The "focus on your surroundings, not yourself" comment is moronic, I'd bet if this guy looks through his own family's photo albums he'll see most pictures are of people, not landscapes.

Selfie sticks do seems pretty antisocial to me though. My sister is always taking selfies (I don't think she has a stick) and whenever my wife and I ask someone to take our picture after the person leaves she'll be like "Oh my god, I can't believe you just gave your phone to a stranger!?!"

Just seems needlessly isolating to me.

People don't carry cameras anymore? Serious question, does anyone here take a digital camera with them when they go on vacation, etc.?

Someone taking a selfie is fine with me, it's your body and there's nothing wrong with advertising yourself (or with narcissism, if we leap to that conclusion).

A girl/group of girls poking me in a club/bar/while I'm taking a stroll and asking me to take a picture of them despite the fact that I don't know them and they have no interest in me other than my potential photography skills*? That is what I think is stupid. Not stupid enough to start some kind of wannabe movement over it, but selfies don't bug strangers. Bugging strangers bugs strangers.

The "bug a stranger in a public place just so it's not a selfie" trend is most amusing on dating sites/apps (especially Tinder, which we know is all about hookups based on superficiality). Girl's profile says something like "if you have selfie pics, swipe left!" and you check out the girl's pics and they're all pics where she's striking poses in the club. End of the day, if someone has an issue with vanity pics, that's one thing. But the idea that the offensiveness of the pic is entirely tied to who is actually holding the camera is... it's just great. 21st century y'all!

*Can you take it again? Make sure you get my bag in the picture! It's too blurry! Do it again with flash!

If people have concerns with obstructed views in museums or concerts or whatever, I totally get it. Better just restrict people from obstructing views with objects then.

Selfies though... man, not everybody wants to ask strangers to take photos of them and their friends. Not every stranger wants to be bothered. Selfie sticks are great.

Are they narcissistic? Meh. I don't know how much you go through your old photos, but I find the ones of friends and family to evoke memories more strongly than the photo I took of landmark X. I can buy a nice picture of the Colosseum or Grand Canyon or whatever. My friends and relatives also don't give a shit about the landmarks either. In my experience, people like pictures of people more than things or places (unless it is very novel).
