"The Art of Going To Concerts Alone"

Status
Not open for further replies.
hehehe, I went to a concert alone because I had to see the band live. It wasn't that big of a deal during the breaks I just left my seat and walked around the arena. I also spent most of my time at The Warped Tour alone because I lost my group of friends when a mosh pit broke out. That wasn't much fun wandering around for 8 hours hoping we would see each other.

It really doesn't matter to me. I like going with other people because it's someone to talk to before and afterwards about how great or shitty the show was. Of course, it's a good place to meet new friends as well.

Based on my experience, it really doesn't matter. Most of the shows I've went to have turned into a giant, sweaty mass of people and I don't see any of my friends for two hours.

Ahh, going to concerts alone. You get used to it after a while...I did at least. It's still a bit depressing, though. The only thing good about it is that my bootlegs aren't filled with my nonsensical chatter with friends. :lol

Ha. I went and saw Charles Bissell (lead singer of the Wrens) last night alone. Luckily, the THREE other underage people there were cool and I got to talking with all of them about bands and such. Good time.

Have any of you guys ever seen the Wrens or Charles Bissell live?

Holy shit. That dude can play guitar. o_o

I saw the Wrens in March. One of the best shows I've ever been to. They can fuckin' throw it down for old dudes. They said I was the first person that had ever requested them to play a song ("Hats Off to Marriage, Baby" from Secaucus for the record). They didn't know how to play it, though. They played an equally good song, though, and played it for me, 'cos it was a day after my birthday. <3

I went to that, and countless other, shows alone. Hardly any of my friends are 21, so it was pretty much me going to shows alone. Plus, add to that the fact I have to pretty much drive 200 miles to see anyone good... yeah, it's basically me flyin' solo.

Saw the Wrens earlier this year, best show so far. Seeing them again in October. Constantines opening up, looks to be an even better show.

:)

You guys are almost making me feel bad for skipping the Wrens show. Given the choice, I think I still made the correct decision.

Nope. I don't have any Wrens shows! :\ Just Ween shows.

Boooooourns! Can't get file list! My computer sux. :(

WhiteMan- What on Earth did you pass up the Wrens for? Please see them when you get the chance, as live they are certified life-changers.

Edit- Anyone else pick up this split? It's only got 3 songs from the Wrens, but it is their first post-Meadowlands material and is definetly worth the sub-$10 price of admission.

Xiu Xiu/Deerhoof/The Gossip/The Decemberists. I am happy with my decision.

I don't have the split yet, unfortunately.

All the material on it was recorded pre-Meadowlands, though, I think. The split was issued before Meadowlands originally, through No Karma (who also had hot Wrens shirts, one of which I own, and their entire back catalog as of last summer), in a Digipak. There was a fire at No Karma HQ that destroyed basically what hadn't been sold, and it was recently reissued. I hope to find a copy of the digipak version someday. As well as a copy of Abbott on Ten23. They are gaping holes in my Wrens collection!

Thanks! I'll have to install a new BT client when I get home from work, because the one I'm using now isn't working at the moment. Thanks a tonnnnnnnnnn.

Maybe an attractive member of the opposite sex would trip and fall and spill their beer on you in some romantic movie sort of meeting; after cleaning yourself off in mock anger, the two of you will fall madly in love and never have to go to a concert by yourself again.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

i'm in the same boat. i missed the killer's show on october due to this, couldnt make up my mind to order tickets, and now its sold out. feels sorta patehtic going to a concert by myself, but my friends are just not the concert going type.

The experience of attending a show alone begins from the moment you land yourself in line waiting to get into the club. Personally, it's at this point that I generally find myself looking around with a false sense of purpose, as if it would make people around me think I might actually be waiting for someone to join me. Then I realize what I'm really looking for is other people who appear to be there by themselves as well. Knowing I'm not the only one validates my situation as not totally abnormal. Unfortunately, this search usually ends up with a lot of false alarms; people in line who really are waiting for friends to join them, as opposed to just faking it like me.

:lol Priceless.

I must be the ultimate loser, cause I go to a lot of places by myself...be it a sports game, movie or concert. Most of the time I'll go to a sporting event with my bro, but if I'm only able to go by myself that doesn't really bother me. Plus with all the cheering and booing that goes on, you kinda feel part of the crowd anyway. With movies I frankly prefer going by myself, though that's easy for me to say since I haven't been on a date since Ronald fucking Regan was in office. Still, if there isn't a lady on my arm, I'd sooner watch a movie by myself in peace then go with a bunch of friends who are gonna do nothing but chat all the way through it.

As for concerts, the timing of this couldn't be better. I've only been to four concerts in my life, including three this year and one just last night. I went to a Rush concert in October 2002, and another one this past August. You wanna talk about trying to avoid being conspicuous if you're by yourself? Try doing that when you're literally the only brother in the entire arena. :lol Outside of a couple people giving me odd looks though, nobody cares...once that music kicks in, that's all that's gonna matter to the listeners.

The third concert I went to was with my sister last month, and it was by none other then a good friend of mine from high school called Shawn Hewitt that my sister knew as well. Shawn and his band (called the National Strike) are just a small gig group, but they've played gigs around the country and I think played a few times in Australia as well. I hadn't seen him in a while, so it was good to run into him again before the show. Music was pretty cool as well...really fresh, unique sound.

As for the last concert, this was hosted last night by Ivana Santilli, a talented singer and musician who's an absolute doll. This gig was actually free...I only found out about it over the weekend, and you had to send an e-mail in to get a confirmation and reserve. I wasn't in time for that, but the return e-mail suggested coming an hour early in case some the confirmed people on the list didn't show up. Until then I was feeling a little awkward, as pretty much everyone in line was with at least one other person, with most of them being couples (some hot, hot ladies there too). That proved to be a good move, as they let a whack of us in with a half hour to go.

Funny enough they had an XBox truck parked to the side, and they'd laid out some XBox's and LCD screens on the floor below with Battlefront, ESPN Hockey 2K5 and Star Wars Battlefront. They also had the Halo 2 movie trailer on a constant loop on a big screen, which looked incredible. This proved to be a life saver, as the show didn't start till 90 minutes after the original time, so at least it gave me something to do without looking awkward until things began.

When the concert itself started, I was able to get pretty close to the stage and off to the right. It was standing only and pretty crowded, and it made no difference that I wasn't with anyone since I wouldn't have been able to hear anyone speak anyway. Ivana and the band put on a fantastic show...full of energy, great instrument playing, and great vocals. And Ivana is just smoking hot...I had a small crush on her back in the day, and I think it might've redeveloped (told you I was a loser :lol). Her second album came out a few months ago, so I'm hoping to pick both up in a week or two.

The only time I ever went to a show by myself I ran into some girls I sorta knew and got to know them a little better. Then she never called me. Meh.

::shrug:: I had to go see Radiohead by myself because my friend had to move into his dorm the next day. I was totally cool with that, but there was no fucking way I was going to miss a band I've been wanting to see live since 1998 just because I didn't have a friend to go with.

I have to go see concerts by myself all the time, given my job. It's really not that bad. I also saw Nightwish alone, but that was of my own volition. Awesome show, by the way.

Yeah, that website seems to indulge in the "if you aren't hanging out with friends while listening to indie and going to indie shows then you AREN'T indie okay" idea. I'm sure in the future, when I have a full time demanding job and it's hard to make plans, I'll just be like "screw it, I'm still going." Why miss a good band? If SP gets back together like Chamberlin said they "probably" will, then I'll have absolutely no shame whatsoever going by myself. Hell, I'll fly to wherever it is to see it. I don't give a crap what anyone says.

Amazingly, she mentioned Sea Ray and I've just been turned on to them and would've been happy to go to that show. But anyways.

Going to something like this by yourself is a bit odd, but like she says, only up to the point everything gets going. Then you're focused on the task at hand. I've been to a couple of sporting events in the past months by myself, and the sheer fact that I've got no one to worry about but myself is refreshing. Blowout by the sixth inning? Leave. Up 53-0 in the second quarter? Leave.

That said, it's not my first choice every time to go in alone, but sometimes it works. And with my taste in music being far from many of my friends, it's probably something I'll end up doing more often, if I want to enjoy some tunes.

And another thing, an entire article set in Chicago, and not one mention of Old Style? No way I'd drink PBR!

I have friends that I go to shows with, but a lot of the time, I'll just be bored and decide to go out at the last minute. If that's the case, I usually go alone. I wasn't even aware there was a horrible stigma about this. Fuck social exercises, I'm there to listen to music. If I get there way early, I always have a journal and MD with me, and there's always tasty gin and tonics at the bar.

I've been to shows by myself and there is definitely an awkwardness about it. Like the piece mentions, my biggest issue is where to stand while the bands are setting up. There usually aren't any places to sit, and it's too dark to be reading anything. Being self-conscious about the whole thing is probably why I don’t go out as much as I used to since, it's hard to get together with friends these days.

She says she's from Madison and PBR is definitely the cheap beer of choice here.
