The Axis Unseen - Official Announcement Trailer

The Axis Unseen attempts to answer the question, "What if someone made a dark-fantasy, heavy-metal, open-world first-person hunting game using the beauty of Unreal Engine 5?" It is being developed for PC by longtime Bethesda veteran Nate Purkeypile, who worked on Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and was the lead artist on Fallout 76.

Unsure, environments look great but with UE5 including Megascans assets now. It's hard to really judge quality of games/development anymore. especially just by looking at shots of environments. Using megascans, even an amateur could whip up a photorealistic environment in UE5 in a matter of hours. And with the Lumen, you can make anything look photorealistic at the press of a button. In the old days, good graphics were a hallmark of a strong development team and good skill. Now, it can be very very deceptive. Everything custom looking that is in there, such as animations etc (so anything that is likely made from scratch rater than prefab assets) looks rough as hell.

This could still be a great game. But my point is shiny realistic environments are no longer a good barometer for this

Somewhat true on both points, we should be extra-skeptical going forward of just seeing the tag "UE5" and getting our hot takes ready for next-gen gaming arguments. Sometimes UE5 will help bring the unimaginable to life, but other times, it'll just be the thing that makes the thing, and it's an engine made to do the thing really well as easily as possible.

...It's worth noting in this case though, before we get too far, 1) this is an in-engine trailer of very early work according to the developer, and 2) the developer is pretty much be just one guy, Nate Purkeypile.

The fire system they added is wild. So good. I think that's the best fire effects/mechanics I've seen in a game.

They? This is a 1-man project by Nate Purkeypile, an ex-BGS dev of 16 years

He was also the lead lighting artist on Starfield for some time

and yes, his game is awesome

Solo? Wow. The skill of these indie devs is off the charts these days. The tools and talent around now is making for some really exciting stuff.

With a name like The Axis Unseen, I was honestly expecting another WW2-based shooter but from the perspective of the Nazis. Boy, I'm glad I was wrong. This game looks incredible. And all from one man? What have I been doing with my life?

The Axis Unseen is a heavy metal horror game from a solo developer who previously worked on Skyrim and Fallout. A new trailer for the game aired during the Spring Showcase, revealing that The Axis Unseen is coming to PC in.
