The Babylon Project

The Babylon Project, a total conversion for Freespace 2 to a Babylon 5 theme, has recently released Base 3.0. Now, since Freespace 2 is abandonware, the project can be released in a form that doesn't require you to have Freespace 2 installed to play it. It may seem a little dated due to the old engine, but they've got access to the source now, so they can do nearly whatever they want with it. For an essentially free game, you might as well take a look.

Here's the only screen I've taken so far (installed it an hour ago), so it's not the greatest cap.

I used to follow this project years ago, but I thought it was abandoned. I am happy to see I was wrong, and even happier to see it is now fully based on the Freespace 2 Source Code Project.

It's definitely much nicer to be seeing the Nials firing their proper beams, rather than those improvised super-rapid tri-bolts that they had to use before they were using fs2_open. For some reason, the sound effect seems a bit screwed up though.

I haven't had any problems with the sound effects. This mod is just as fun as I remember :)

It's sad that this is the first time in over two years I have had a reason to use my Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro. What I would give for a new space sim...

A couple more screenshots in case anyone is interested. I'm not very good at getting good screenshots, but I threw together a quickie mission with a bunch of bigger ships.

Some new images now that I figured out which options in the FS2_Open launcher make it look the best:

I had to brighten them a bit, since the screen caps are pretty dark by default. Note that pretty specular lighting and stuff.

Here are a couple more, after I was looking around more in the FS2_Open configurator, and realized they had environment mapping in there too. It's a bit strange to use it for Babylon 5 stuff though, as seen here. I raised the gamma on this to brighten them, since it was hard to see otherwise:

Apparently, there's also some experimental stuff with visible secondary weapons in the works. That means that rather than your missiles just coming out of nowhere, you can see them mounted on your ship. It's pretty neat stuff.

Pissed me off to no end that the SIerra Babylon 5 game was cancelled. I remember when I interviewed there some 6 years ago (or so) and first saw that game in development and I almost shat my pants. But the offer was bad so I went elsewhere - and luckily escaped the shutdown of the Sierra office out in the woods (literally) that was making that game.

In case anyone still cares, TBP 3.3 was released last Wednesday. I haven't toyed around with it that much, but from what I can see, there are now a whole bunch of new ships to play with, including the Drakh and Shadow fleet. There's even a Vorlon Planetkiller that seems to be properly scaled. I tried just putting that into a quick custom mission, but it just kept killing everything in the path of its -wider than any other capital ship- beam, before anything could even approach it. I put myself on invincible, but I think some of the collision detection might be a bit messed up at that scale. Even so, my Starfury wasn't going to do much to it. There's also the ISA Victory class from Crusade.

Some models that are included in the tech room and in the mission editor list do not actually work yet, or at least they keep crashing FRED if I try to add them to the mission. Those, as far as I have seen, include the Drakh mothership and Babylon 5. It's a shame, because I'd really like to see some Shadow Battlecrabs slice it apart for fun. I don't have any screenshots yet.

You'll need to download about 4-500MB of files. From the project's download page, you can actually just right click and save as the necessary files, rather than registering at the download page, which was really strange, but still good for me. If you're just starting out, you need the 3.2 base (~300MB), 3.3 base (~20MB), and the 3.3 fix patch (~40MB). If you want to have any missions to play, you also need to download the various mission packs. I had a bit of trouble getting the thing to run initially this time, but just remember to select the proper FS Open version in the launcher (I think it's .367 or something like that). Have fun.

I have to recommend INFERNO as being the best freespace 2 mod, next is BLACKWATER OPS. TBP is very good.

If you ever like space combat sims, or soncole derivatives like starfox, colony wars, you have to try freespace 2. The devs released the source code, so the whole engine is being modified all the time. Even without the source code stuff there's tons and tons of mods, missions, campaigns etc.

Plus you can get the game minus the music and movies for free. If you are more motivated you can get the music and movie files as well.

Your source or all things freespace 2, tons of mods. Use the forums to find what you need, the acutal webpage doesn't have much in it's downloads sections.

And those screens i posted are NOTHING compared to what you'll see and do if you play INFERNO, Blakcwater Ops, etc.

I guess B5 works fine, but it crashes the mission editor on my PC if I left the "show outline" option on, although just showing the model and not the wireframe strangely gave me no problems with the station. I'm not very good at putting together missions, but here's a little thing I threw together, and hopefully the scenario looks familiar to some B5 viewers.
