NeoGAF's favorite showrunner, Kurt Sutter, has an all new show entitled The Bastard Executioner. The series kicks off with a 2 hour premiere on Tuesday, September 15th. Early reviews have been mixed, and there's no telling how much of a train wreck this series will be. Nonetheless, the setting could be fun and Sutter, when placed in the right circumstances, has occasionally produced some great tv over the years. The first season will consist of 10 episodes
that all likely overrun their scheduled airtime
FX PR said:The Bastard Executioner is a blood-soaked, medieval epic that tells the story of Wilkin Brattle, a 14th century warrior, whose life is forever changed when a divine messenger beseeches him to lay down his sword and lead the life of another man: a journeyman executioner. Set in northern Wales during a time rife with rebellion and political upheaval, Wilkin must walk a tight rope between protecting his true identity while also serving a mysterious destiny.
Guided by Annora, a mystical healer whose seeming omniscience keeps Wilkin under her sway; manipulated by Milus Corbett, a devious Chamberlain with grand political aspirations; and driven by a deepening connection with the Baroness Lady Love, Wilkin struggles to navigate political, emotional and supernal pitfalls in his quest to understand his greater purpose.

Early reviews from dubious sources:
- Deadline review:
With the debut of The Bastard Executioner on FX on September 15 at 10 PM, the Sons Of Anarchy creator has, as my video review above says, crafted a strong show that cuts sharp and deep. Honestly, it is something you dont want to miss.
- SF Chronicle review: (behind the paywall)In its complex tale of Wilkin Brattle, played so well by Lee Jones, the ethos of Bastard reminds me a lot of the Christopher Nolan-directed Batman trilogy with its heroic nuance and almost overwhelming sense of sadness. Forced to take on the identity and death-bringing profession of another, Brattle is a man at battle with himself in the court of his most hated enemies. That battle takes place against the often bloody backdrop of the nasty and brutish world, to paraphrase Thomas Hobbes, he lives in a world, at least from the episodes that Ive seen, Sutter has fully formed.
- Forbes review (contributor)The series is not for the squeamish. But, as with Game of Thrones, the violence is not gratuitous but rather a necessary tool in telling the story. The Bastard Executioner not only hits the mark, it sets the bar very high for the rest of the fall season.
- Time reviewThe Bastard Executioner is a show worthy of the eye-balls its sure to receive upon its series premiere (FX is one of the only basic cable networks still scoring worthwhile Nielsen ratings on its scripted dramas). The biggest thing to worry about, however, is a lingering question of whether or not viewers will be willing to sit through a lackluster nearly hour and a half of air time to get to the goods. But, if they do, it seems fair to say theyll be rewarded on the other side of that journey.
- LV Weekly ReviewJust as that show [SoA] took a while to get in gear, The Bastard Executioner may need time to sharpen its storytelling. But by the second episode, whenits already starting to exhibit signs of developing into a bloody good show.Brattle is ordered to give a rebellious 16-year-old tomboy the ax and Sagals sorceress yanks a demonic snake from the throat of a dismembered corpse,
- Philly.com reviewThe political machinations, led by True Bloods Stephen Moyer as a devious chamberlain, are more interesting, especially when they delve into the complex dynamic between the English ruling class and the Welsh peasants. But Sutter seems more interested in severed limbs and mysterious pronouncements (he also gives himself the role of Annoras disfigured, hooded companion, prone to delivering cryptic dialogue), at least so far. It doesnt help that Jones makes for a bland protagonist, and Wilkins agonizing over carrying out his executioners duties isnt particularly interesting. 2.5 out of 5 stars
From Kurt Sutter, creator of FX's often savage "Sons of Anarchy," we get a show about an executioner in 14th-century Wales. What could possibly go wrong?
FX exacted a promise that it wouldn't just be "a head in a basket every week," and Sutter delivered a mix of mystery and history - starring Lee Jones as the reluctant title character that had me hooked by the end of the two-hour premiere.
