The Best Year in Gaming?

With 2025 off to an amazing first 4 months, I was starting to think about how it's up there with some of the best years in gaming. KCD2, Marvel Rivals, Monster Hunter Wilds, Civ 7, 2 warriors games, Avowed, LAD Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, AC Shadows, Split Fiction, Inzoi, The First Berserker: Khazan, Blue Prince, Clair Obscur: E33 all released so far and that's not counting remasters and re-releases. (Just 4 months in). I won't go through any exhaustive list of what's to come, but Switch 2 and GTA6 on the horizon are monumental. What other years could be considered the GOAT year for video game release?

btw, this is my first thread. Feel free to add a poll or something.

It been great year, I had a blast playing Expedition 33, Xenoblade X DE and MHWilds and I have Switch 2 to look forward to.

Expedition 33 is specially surprised me how GOOD it was, my current GOTY.

Looks to be better than last year, but we'll see.

I do wonder if GTA6 coming out will delay more games into next year, and the later half will end up being lighter.

Grats on your first thread :)

Has been a very good year so far not to mention we have Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, Doom and my bet is we get a surprise at the Xbox E3 show thats dropping this year yet and its not some small Indie title

Guessing though

2015 is a personal favourite of mine.

The Witcher 3 and Bloodborne released. I also got a lot out of MGSV, Fallout 4 and R6 Siege.

Path of Exile 2, MhW, marvel cosmic Invasion, Ninja Gaiden 2 remaster, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound,... yes, its been good this year, and looking like its going to get better.

2004, 2007, and 2023.

2023 was absolutely stacked with Baldur's Gate 3, Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, Diablo IV, RE4 Remake, Hogwart's Legacy, Jedi Survivor, FF16, Zelda TOTK, Dead Space Remake, Lies of P, LotF, Hi-Fi Rush, Armored Core VI, Remnant 2, Starfield, Metroid Prime Remastered, CP Phantom Liberty, MW3 (2023). Say what you will about some of those titles, but it felt like every other week some big release was happening.

1998 and 2004 seem to come up a lot in talks of best year ever. I personally have never been able to pinpoint the best year because I'm always uncovering something new from the past that makes me reassess my thoughts on certain consoles and eras.

2025 is looking very nice if the games do deliver up to their promise. Switch 2 incoming and third parties crushing it on the other platforms.

2025 is the first year where I'd recommend a current gen console. Everything up until 2025 wasn't really worth it to upgrade. Best? Definitely not, that still belongs to 2004.

It's either this year or the year of Elden Ring or the year with BG3.

This year is stacking up though, so honestly I'm not mad.

I say this as an Atari child. I can't be fooled by rose colored glasses unless I want to be.

I've been playing nothing but civ 7 so I say this from a position of love but listing this game as part of a justification for a GOAT year… c'mon!

This year sucks btw, but I'm willing to give 33 a chance.

We'll see, I liked Split Fiction and Expedition 33 is amazing but otherwise it's been pretty standard so far.

Metroid Prime 4 and Silksong are both currently scheduled for 2025 release though, those two alone would make it pretty monumental for me personally (and make it a dogfight for my personal GOTY).

best year in gaming since the last decade 2015.

2024 was very close with things like Space Marine 2, Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Wukong.

But 2025 is looking to be even better with Oblivion Remaster, Monster Hunter Wilds, Mario Kart World, Metroid Prime 4 whatever comes later. If GTA VI or a new Resident Evil comes out this year than it'll easily be the best.

As someone who believes the 7th generation was the peak of (console) gaming, I have to make the case for 2007. It brought a lot of good sequels and new IPs that turned into huge franchises.

This isn't exhaustive; it's only the stuff I personally played and enjoyed on some level:

  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  • Halo 3
  • God of War II
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
  • Half-Life 2: Episode Two
  • Assassin's Creed
  • BioShock
  • Crackdown
  • Crysis
  • Mass Effect
  • Portal
  • The Darkness
  • The Witcher
  • Uncharted

2024 into 2025 was amazing thanks to Path of Exile 2. After that I've played KCD2 and Expedition 33, both really amazing games imo, so yeah so far so good!

Best year for this gen for sure. Finally feels like its really picking up. I'm having a hard time keeping up with new games at this point.

Every year we get the "best year ever" "worst year ever" thread. People need to learn no to speak in extremes.

Good start so far, 3 8/10 games so far, ac shadows, split fiction and kcd2. clair is next on my play list and then doom and we will see. Not the best tho since there isnt any game to surpass Cyberpunk 2077 so far and GTA6 is not something I really care about, as I'm more of a sci-fi guy.

1994, absolutely. Super Metroid, Final Fantasy III, Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong '94. And that's just from the Nintendo side of things. The best devs in the world were making 2D games, which really hasn't happened since the mid-90s.

Reading some of these answers, I feel old.

I'm a 2011 fan.

Portal 2, Deadspace 2, Skyrim, Saints Row 3, Arkham City. Deus Ex, Bastion, L.A. Noire, Witcher 2. Terrarria, Dark Souls

20205: in the absence of genuinely great games, 'good' games are valued more highly...

That's the exact kind of erudite response I'd expect from someone living 18 thousand years in the future

Nice to see a positive first thread to enjoy gaming. Keep that shit up mate.

Solid year this one, top 5-10 I'd say. Xbox - HDD bloated, removing games to play others. PC - put in a new SSD for all the games/son games. Good times. Split Fiction is brilliant with the family and seriously looking forward to DOOM Dark Ages. GTA6 not so much but I'll do the campaign, no interest in online there. Apex Legends continues to dominate my play time though. Kids will get a Switch 2 so I'll have some play time with ol' Ninty but nothing dominating my game time. Nintendo is fun as a pick up but I've seen it all before for the most part for anything to sink my time into.

I forgot the year, but the same year MGS1 for Ps1 and Zelda N64 came out at the same year. About 2025 , this is the best year in gaming for this generation of console. Last year for me there are only three bright spots: Stellar Blade, Silent Hill 2 remake, and Astrobot.

The last few years have been much better than people want to admit. We've gotten bangers year after year. Some people prefer to choose negativity for the sake of negativity. Others have been eating well for years.

Beaten to it but 2007 was fucking incredible, with all three consoles and PC firing on all cylinders, there were like 5-6 games that year that would be my GOTY in almost any other year.

2010 was also one of my honourable mentions that I don't seem brought up much; Mario Galaxy 2, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Black Ops 1, RDR1, Halo Reach, God of War 3, Alan Wake, Fallout New Vegas, Bioshock 2, Monster Hunter Tri, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Enslaved, Super Meat Boy, Metro 2033...

That would be 1998.

Too hard too choose. There've been quite some memorable years. Late 90s, 2004, 2007, 2010.

Not this year. Although I do think I'm already playing two GOTY contenders, though: KCD2 and Expedition 33.

Pretty sure I exhaustively studied this at one point and settled on 1998.
1994 is also amazing.
2010 is pretty Goated with Mass Effect 2, Fallout New Vegas, Starcraft 2, Red Dead Redemption, Mario Galaxy 2, Civ 5.
Best recent years are 2020 and 2023.

*2007 is overrated. A good year to be sure, but none of those games are in my top 50. I guess Bioshock would come closest, but the game doesn't even play very well.
