The bi-weekly HDTV, is this a good one? thread.

First tragedy, then farce.
I have an HDTV, but its a smallish LCD display that is for my bedroom. At the moment, its in my living room, and its just sad looking :*(

I want to get a pretty good size 720p set and have settled on either a Sony LCD rear-projection unit or a Samsung DLP set. I want the Samsung because I prefer the IQ plus I can get a larger TV for the same price... my question is, does anyone own one of the 2005 model Sammy's here? How bad is lag for current systems? I would suspect that the 360 wouldnt be an issue since its a 720p signal (at least, I would hope not). I know older ones had issues, but Im hoping the newer DLP's are better.

While I am here, Im getting a new Sound System. What good is a 6.1 or 7.1 channel set up? Does anything come encoded for them? Does TV sound ok over them, especially when using Pro Logic II? And Ive been eyeing a unit with wireless rear speakers.. do these work ok?

Some things are indeed encoded for 6.1/7.1 Dolby EX or DTS-ES. You can always get a stereo that supports them now, and add the additional speakers later, as you have opportunity. An example of a movie that supports the additional channels would be the extended editions of LotR.

thats funny because those were the exact Sony and Onkyo I was looking at. :lol

I may wind up with the Sony TV just because it wont have lag issues. Though, its sorta a funky resolution.

The Sony 50" A10 has a straight x720 res, if that's really a concern...great reviews and a decent price, as well.
Last years model might have a few more bells & whistles, but the A10 is pretty damn awesome for the price.

Any word on Sharp AQUOS LCD's ?

Sharp's are good. Make sure it's not an older one with crappy refresh rate + trails.

You can get a Sharp (not Aquos) LCD from Costco right now that's actually a pretty good deal.

The msrps for Sharp Acquos models have been falling by about 10%-13% over the last month, which is why you are seeing them "on sale" at BB and CC.

If you are like a lot of people (me included), and are looking for a new HDTV TV for the 360, the Sharps should definitely be on your radar screen (I really like the 43", which is still $3,500+).

The TV that has my attention right now though is the Samsung 42" plasma - in its top of the line 72 series. It is all black, 1028 x 768 (i.e. good for 720p), HDMI, two component inputs, a VGA input (so I can use it as a monitor), and it has ten speakers. Abe's is selling it right now for $2,399 + $200 for shipping. $2,600 is almost in my desired price range, but, I am definitely going to wait until early November at the earliest before I pull the trigger.

I've been looking at this 30 inch Samsung. Anyone know anything about it?

I'm looking for something in the 30-34 range for about $1000-1200. Going to buy it around 360 time for sure, but this is going to be my main gaming TV, so want it to work well with PS3 as well.

Quick HD resolution question.

Can someone explain to me why there are huge plasma TVs out there with 1366x768 resolution?

I was at Circuit City last night looking at the XBR960 I'm probably gonig to pick up, and I wandered over to the big plasmas/lcds. All the really big ones had this resolution, and the college football game they had on on ESPN looked TERRIBLE. They looked like highly compressed jpegs, and I'd imagine that it was due in part to the gact that the resolution was so screwed up. On the smaller CRTs and plasmas the game looked perfect.

i have the grand wega 42inch 3LCD rear projection and it kicks all kinds of ass. my friend has a samsung 42inch LCD tv and the difference in picture quality and depth of black is none.

I bought the same set and I am completely happy with my purchase. Now with Xbox 360 supporting 720p as a standard, I can't wait for the launch.

Any ghosting at all? Does this thing have a CRT-like refresh rate?

Not that I've seen so far, but I might not be the best person to ask because I'm not an HD TV expert yet. I don't think any LCD TV's refresh rate is CRT-like yet, but I don't mind this. Make sure to see it running in person before you buy anything.

I have a 27" Westinghouse LCD, and I've been very happy with it. The built-in speakers could be better, but that's my only minor complaint.

I would guess it was more to do with the CC feed, also, ESPN are C**TS. They compress stuff to save bandwidth, broadcast at the wrong aspect ratio, have more artifacts than anyone else and ESPN HD actually broadcasts more than half of its stuff at 480p with retarded sidebars. I HATE THEM.

Discovery does it right.

Thanks for the comments people.. im going out to pick up a new TV next week (or the following week) and i stopped into CC to check them out. I saw the AQUOS and it had a very clean picture but wasnt sure because I never bought a product from sharp.

I should be gaming in HD by the end of the month.

I would avoid the Sharp Acquos sets for gaming. The 37" and above panels have a 1920x1080 resolution, but do not accept 1080p signals. The best they will display is 1080i, and 720p will obviously not be displayed in native reolution.

If you must get a Sharp, get the 45" model with the external tuner. That one allows a workaround using a PC and replacement tuner to get a 1080p picture.

This is exactly the TV I'm thinking of getting! The picture looked really good when I went to the Sony store to check it out--only problem I noticed was a rainbow "dancing grain" effect, but it could have been the source video.

Where did you buy yours from?

i got it from sony central (sydney australia) managed to get the price down a fair bit too :) the feed in store had a rainbow effect that you mention but when he demo'd me the 720p/1080i feeds on it the effect dissapeared. i guess maybe it was running SDTV or something

Cool, thanks! I'll probably wait until early November to get mine (wishing for a holiday price drop). Of all the projection TVs in that price/size range, the picture was clearly the best.

to be honest when i was staring googly eyed at it amazed at how nice the picture was, when the salesguy told me it was RPTV i was very shocked, it dead set looks like a LCD HDTV, the 3LCD tech really makes a huge difference

i was looking at the 26" model for my room

I'm thinking of going with the 32" Viewsonic LCD HDTV and will be using it for console gaming, Hi-Def film viewing and PC use (no PC gaming, just the web, MS Office apps and graphics programs). My question is how far back should the viewing distance be for a monitor of this size? I was hoping to use it at a desk but when I was thinking it out I wasn't sure that was a hot idea. I am sure one of you has experience in this regard. :)

I am thinking that 32" 16:9 LCD HDTV w/ VGA, HDMI, Component and at 720p for $1200 or less sounds like a pretty good deal. It's either that or go with the 27" for $750 but no HDMI.

I think to test out my last question I'll try playing MGS3 with my nose to my 30" CRT. :D

Anyway, here's another question that may or may not get answered. :p
If I were to go with the 32" Viewsonic that has HDMI in http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcdtv/n3250w/
It doesn't seem to support an optical audio OUT, it just outputs audio to a mini-plug or to it's crappy speakers. Since PS3 is using HDMI and that supports audio, how will I get digital audio to my receiver? Maybe the PS3 will support HDMI 'and' have an optical audio out jack like on the PS2? Does anyone happen to have a large picture that shows the back of the PS3? I tried finding one on Gamespot and IGN but couldn't find an adequate one.
Thanks.

PS3 will definitely have optical-out. Basically every device with HDMI-out (DVD players, STBs) will almost certainly continue to have separate digital audio outputs because not every display has them. They also aren't going to abandon all of the people who want to use s-video, component, etc as well as a surround system.

Okay excellent, thank you very much. What you said also makes a lot of sense, I should have thought about that aspect.

Also, I just played some MGS3 on my 30" 16:9 CRT from about two feet away, it's not what I am use to for sure. I feel too close! I'm afraid using a 30"+ LCD as a PC monitor may be a bit overkill.
