The Castle of Illusion worship thread

Castle of Illusion was fantastic...one of my favourite 16bit games! Quackshot was great too but it wasn't half as good as CoI

Yeah, COI was definitely an awesome game. In fact at the time, the game was so good, it actually took away some of the "oomph" of the release of Sonic the Hedgehog. COI was released towards the end of 1990, and Sonic was released later that summer.

BTW, here's an interesting link that provides some background info on Mickey's many Genesis adventures: http://www.sega-16.com/Feature- Mikey Mouse.htm

I view COI as a traditional 2D platformer with a lot of charm. You still had to play it for a while to get into it. Sonic had energy not found in previous platformers and that was really the impact in my opinion. It was something that caught your eye very quickly.

Both games, of course, had high production values that seperated them to most early Genny games.

Castle of Illusion has special significance for me. I grew up in a "No Video Games Allowed" household until the 7th grade when my parents caved and bought me and my brothers a Sega Genesis for Christmas along with 4 games: Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star III, Spider-Man (later re-titled Spider-Man vs. the Kingpin I think but at the time it was just Spider-Man) and...Mickey Mouse and the Castle of Illusion.

I initially took a pass on the Mickey Mouse game in favor of the other, "cooler looking" games we received, but once I tried it (after a bout of frustration involving PS3 and Spider-Man), man, I was hooked. What a great game. I'll never forget the end boss for the game...or the music, as many others have mentioned.

Now I need to dig up my Genesis and find a place in my hellish A/V framework for it. :D

Slightly off topic, but I was always surprised that Disney didn't get more into games themselves given their history of animation. They have always been in it, but back around the NES/Genesis time frame I think they had a window to really be a dominant player, but never seemed to take it all that seriously. They have made more of a push the last several years, but to me it sometimes still looks like Disney corporate is not fully committed.

I know a guy who worked for Disney Interactive. Basically, Disney simply doesn't know its ass from its elbow. They have all the man power, money, distribution networks, and properties but does nothing with it when it comes to games because they fear them.

Besides the Animation side they have loads of properties they could use. Lots of TV but also movies like The Rock, Armageddon, Kill Bill, etc. Anything with Miramax, Touchstone, Buena Vista, or Hollywood Pictures is theirs.

I read an interview with Quentien Tarantino recently where he stated Disney no longer has control of Kill Bill, which is why he is able to release The Whole Bloody Affair (NC-17 version of vol. 1 & 2 combined into one film) here in the States this Fall. I might be completely off base with this but I had assumed at the time they lost control of all their Miramax properties somehow....don't really keep up with this stuff or care much about it, but I wanted to point out that this might no longer be true...

Maybe I'll do a little digging.

edit: Here's the actual quote from Tarantino:

"Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is definitely getting a wide release," he told us, "actually, that'll probably be the first movie that Miramax, under their new company, will be releasing theatrically. It's the Japanese version, that's why I call it that, you know, it should probably come out in the next few months. It's going to be NC-17 in America. We couldn't do that when Disney owned the place but now Disney's the fuck outta there we can do anything we want! It's gonna be off the hook!"

Hah...I remember staying up all night beating Quackshot with my bro and my cousin, good times (coulda used a save feature though :) ) WoI is ine f the first games we got for our Genny (that and Sonic 2, Madden 92, and LHX attack chopper). I just replayed QS and WoI recently, and I remember playing CoI a long time ago, apart from looking really pretty, it was an awesome platformer, some of the best visuals on the Genesis, and possibly one of my favorite lisenced of all time (next to Riddick). Time for a CoI replay.

hell yes. this is one of my favorite platformers ever. really rich level design. i'm due for a replay.

I consider Kingdom Hearts the spiritual successor to Castle of Illusion.

this calls for that picture of the golden retriever in the meat grinder.

WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT

Both had gorgeous graphics, some great platforming elements, Disney characters, wonderful scores and that sort of old-school charm that is so rare in video games.

but...castle of illusion is so obviously good while kingdom hearts is so obviously evil. i consider kingdom hearts the spiritual successor to...i don't know...the irish potato famine. but that's quite enough about kingdom hearts.

Old school charm? Great platforming elements? We are talking about Kingdom Hearts, right?

Even if Kingdom Hearts were a halfway decent game - and it's not, really...at all, in my opinion....ESPECIALLY the "platforming" elements...it's not even within the same genre as CoI.

Furthermore, CoI wasn't a "cameo fest" like KH. If I'm remembering it correctly, the titular character and the damsel in distress were the only recognizable characters in the game.

In ten years time when there is a "Kingdom Hearts worship thread", I will be vindicated. Until then you can all just sod off.

Leave the Square whoring out of my topic.

Hahaha, "Square whoring" isn't my style. I think it's the only game they've released this generation that's worth buying.

The first Metal Slug games are pretty brilliant. Not quite next-gen 2D, but the attention to detail is remarkable in those games. They're possibly the last 2D games made that I admire.

There's a few Genesis games I remember seeing for the first time in it's formative years that blew my mind away. Revenge of Shinobi. Thunderforce 3. Sonic. NHL Hockey. Cool Spot. And Castle of Illusion. I was absolute amazed how how good this game looked...just gorgeous visuals with great use of colour. Funny enough, we never got this game...but we did get Castle of Illusion for my brother's Game Gear. And that game was a trip. Didn't have the beautiful visuals that the Genny version had but they looked good enough, but the gameplay was really solid. It was hard as hell too...took me a few months to beat that thing.

We also got The Lucky Dime Caper starring Donald Duck for Game Gear, and that game really disappointed me cause I basically finished the whole thing in my second try. :lol

I since grabbed the Genny rom of COI a few years ago, and it still looks good...even beautiful. It's a credit to the artists that a game made around the same time the Berlin Wall came down can still be seen that way.

There were some really quality 16 bit Disney softs in '93 and '94. Aladdin (well the Genny version anyway) and Lion King were damn good games, that could've just has easily been turd burgers since they were going to sell big anyway.
