The cheap scenes of MGS3

When Ocelot first showed up in the game, there were 5-6 soldier pointing guns at him, then Ocelot pulled out a hand gun, shot them 1 by 1 with style, without a single shot fired by the soldiers. The soldiers just stood there, waiting to be shot.

This usually happens in a B movie. Give me a break.

most of those scenes where someone shoots a bunch of soldiers are meant to be in extreme slow motion. it's really obvious when eva does it, because all the shooting happens in the time it takes snake to throw himself on the ground. but that said, mgs IS a cheesy action movie, in the best possible sense.

Infinite bullets.

I think that says it all.

I remember the MGS2 scene where Ocelot did the same thing, but that was with a revolver, I thought it was ok, not as bad as the one in MGS3.

Actually given the state of Hollywood today, a sequence fits in very well with modern action movies.

The modern Hollywood version would just be shot with Slow-mo shakey cam bullet time, instead of just slow mo.

The way he did it in Metal Gear Solid 2 seemed more realistic to me, at least at the time. I remember all the soliders being really close and him just laying into them very fast. The scene in Metal Gear Solid 3 was a lot to swallow...but you have to expect to eat huge snakes like that when you jump into a Metal Gear Solid game.

Yeah, I thought it was obvous that the scene is slo-mo. Ocelot is supposed to be some kind of wizard with handguns, so why would such thing be impossible for him to do ?

His brilliance with guns becomes very obvious when you first fight him. It's really cool how that fight pans out.

MGS storys are on par with B movies so i dont see anything wrong with the cutscene, and cmon its a freaking game with Vampire, robots and stuff what did you expect?

It's Metal Gear... It's A GIANT ROBOT WITH A RAIL GUN that can launch a NUCLEAR WARHEAD ANYWHERE ON THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH!

Come on...

I think we all know who's the B-movie in here...

I'm so sick of people mocking the MGS games because of unrealistic or corny plot points. Isn't that part of their fun for the majority of it's fans? I love that shit and I'm not a big MG fanboy. Realism is never a factor for me with these titles. And by god, I'm alright with that!

It's not so much the individual issues as the combined preponderance thereof. For instance, I'm pretty sure I couldn't pass a test on the plot of Snake Eater. I was doing fine until it decides to drop some kind of quadruple-reverse twist barrage in the course of the concluding narration, but after that, not only do I not know, I don't care.

That's an improvement on Sons of Liberty, though, where you couldn't even grade the test, there being no clear answers to the questions it raises.

DFS.

surely part of enjoying mgs is knowing when to stop caring. if you're still trying to keep hold of plot strands by the time the screen goes black and that last silly outro communique comes through, then you've missed your cue. i couldn't follow mgs3's final convolutions either. but there's nothing as sheerly alienating as mgs1's nature film stock footage or mgs2's unassimilated lecturing. that's probably something.

the joke, probably, is on the people who write those earnest, unconflicted "plot guides" that forum apologists will periodically link to.

I haven't had a chance to play MGS3 yet, but this about sums it up for me. MGS series has been over the top, but it doesn't detract from the experience, for me at least.

For me, the fact that it's so over the top IS the experience. I cannot begin to comprehend how anyone could take this shit seriously. I see it as a brilliant, hilarious, even subversive parody, and a joke on anyone who attempts to read into it anything deep or meaningful.

And even if it is serious, which I highly doubt, then it's still entertaining as hell!

I hated Twin Snakes because of that shit. The scene that gets on sandman's nerves in MGS3 also got on mine. "Ugh, gay" was my reaction, I believe. It's just retarded any way you look at it. Save the BUT THE WHOLE SERIES IS OVER THE TOP crap. Even EVA, a friggin pencil pusher, is capable of that superhuman take-out-a-half-dozen-elite-soliders-without-them-firing-a-shot crap. Why that was even a part of her characterization is beyond me. And I almost forgot about Snake taking out a half dozen armed guards encircling him just with his hunting knife. Be more creative, Kojima. You could have painted the picture of Ocelot, Eva, and Snake being badasses in a more creative, believable way. Instead you reuse the same scene more or less three times within the first couple hours of gameplay.

The scene where EVA does a backflip off Ocelot's face on her bike, lands, and catches his knife without looking also made me want to clinch my fist.

And could he USE slow-motion any more than he does?

Don't get me wrong, I loved the game and most of the cutscenes, I just think Kojima and whoever else is responsible for the scripting of actions in the cutscenes suffer from trying to be too "cool" too often.

EVA is not a pencil pusher. She is a spy of the Chinese branch of the philosphers. Considering that, i guess that scene would be somewhat more reasonable

Ah, yes. I forgot about that twist at the end. Thanks for correcting me. That makes it kind of better I guess :)

actually i was referring to this:

"And could he USE slow-motion any more than he does?"

this is generally a comic book guy thread, but that's an especially comic book guy intonation. i heard his voice.

Have you seen the movie Equilibrium. Bale's Character had a lot seen which he shot many guys in same kind situation. It is equally impossible like the scene in MGS, but they look cool. And it is an awesome movie. Ocelot's scene looks really lame, still MGS3 is a solid game.

does the comic book guy have an actual name?

I don't think so. He had an episode where he had the center plot, but they still just called him Comic Book Guy.

I love you, Bobby. Thanks for saving me from posting.

Hahaha, you people are actually getting angry over this stuff? As long as we're on unrealistic gaming scenarios, let me go get Bungie on the phone so we can go ahead and tell them that we're sick of the rehashed "Single soldier taking on an entire alien army" gimmick. While I'm at it, lets get ahold of Rockstar, too. Oh yeah, and let's not forget damn near EVERY GAME DEVELOPER EVER. You're all griping about Ocelot shooting six people that quickly, but you see nothing wrong with a sniper who's dead most of the time and is brought to life by a parrot and Mother Nature, or a guy who can control hornets, or a Colonel that regularly has 10 million volts running through his body? Let's at least get a little consistency going.

Kuwabara, kuwabara.

I'd like to see what the same people complaing about "realism" like that would have to say if their Doom marine instead of surviving multiple direct hits from a rocket launcher would get his limbs blown off realistically and later wouldn't magically grow them back by eating a medipack :)

Great post btw.
