The contrarians: They didn’t vote for Trump, but they would now

"A lot has been written since Election Day about people who didn’t vote at all and wish they had because they were unhappy with the results. And a lot more has been written about those who cast their vote for the winner and came to regret it. (There is even a popular Twitter account called @Trump_Regrets with more than a quarter of a million followers.) And there is talk of hushed Trump support, people who voted for him but don’t admit that to pollsters or their social circles.

But what of those who might be called “Donny-Come-Latelys”? People who did not support the candidate on Nov. 8, but now, 100 days in, find that they do?

There are probably not a lot of them. No national polls count them in particular, but Trump’s historically low approval rating indicates there has not been a surge of conversions. They are hard to find for interviews. When Yahoo put out an invitation on social media there were far more jokes about unicorns than there were people raising their hands. “I don’t believe such a person could possibly exist” was one typical response.

They do. And their reasons for changing their minds provide a glimpse at how the messages of this young administration are being heard by one slice of the population."

For the record, I didn't vote for Trump and wouldn't at this point (need to add that in there since I'll be labeled a Trump supporter) but I do find it makes for interesting discussion.

Basically they think the liberals are very mean.

“I’m very much opposed to a wall,” says IsBell, who is married, he says, to “a legal immigrant from Peru.” His four brothers are married to “legal immigrants from Mexico, the Philippines, and the Dominican Republic, and they have all learned Spanish and their children speak Spanish, except my brother whose wife is Filipina, he speaks Estonian, go figure.”

This made me laugh.

Sound like intellectually immature individuals that are upset that the tolerant Left is being so intolerant to bigots and bigot-supporters.

”The media and the left kept calling those who voted for Trump ‘racist' and ‘misogynistic,'" he said. ”I know the people who voted for him are good people. They cast their votes because they were pro-life, or pro-Second Amendment, but not because they had malice in their hearts toward immigrants. I know these people, and if I have to take sides I'm going to side with the people who I know.

Adorable.

To paraphrase: "The other side and the media are being mean to the racist-mongering bigot. I don't like that."

These two next to each other:

When Milo Yiannopoulos was not allowed to speak in Berkeley, that was IsBell's turning point. ”Not because I support anything the guy was going to say, but I support his right to say it," he says. ”I find myself so bothered with what I view as the violent assault against free speech. It was a galvanizing event. I thought, ‘If this is what the opposition is, then I'll pick a side.'"

”The anti-Trump group is extremely vocal, and they don't understand the other side," he says. ”They just can't fathom why anybody would support Trump, and I find that frustrating and shortsighted. The anti-Trump movement seems elitist, entitled and incredibly closed-minded. Intolerance is intolerance. The Trump side seems more tolerant to me."

They... kind of work together as Filthy Liberals Shouting Down Opposition, but as soon as you take into consideration what Milo actually says, it spins out of control. It's the old idea that true tolerance can only be found if you tolerate the intolerance of others. It's the demand for safe spaces so people can bitch about fluffy liberal safe spaces without being called on it. It's worse to stand up against the shit Milo said than it is to actually get up on stage and invite mockery and hatred and derision of others.

A lot of these people seem to be pro-Trump now to stick it to people they feel are simply too mean. But by doing so they're backing Trump, a man whose rise included fame based on his habit of giving people mocking nicknames.

The Paradox of Tolerance (tolerate intolerance)
The Hypocrisy of Intolerance (demand your intolerance be tolerated)

I bet these morons didn't do their research on the orange cheeto and his quiet support of the KKK, his racism and his encouragement of violence and racism. Oh who am I kidding, they only care about how mean the intolerant left is. Bunch of idiots.....

The pathetic display the democrats have put up since he came in to office isn't inspiring much confidence in me. Almost all resistance has been from the private sector. Having said that I'd never vote for Trump.

I don't get this at all and it's part of the uphill battle they face. It feels like nothing they do will ever be good enough for some and people ignore that they have no power to make any noise right now. Only thing they can do is not show up and they've been doing so lately.

What are the odds that these people actually did vote for Trump?

People were embarrassed to say before the election which contributed to every poll and pundit to get the election wrong. Now I think those people feel validated so there's no reason to deny it.

Disagree there. When the travel ban EO came in where was the outrage from our elected officials? There were a handful who complained about it. The people rose up and challenged it.

Adorable.

It's not about the reason, though, is it. It doesn't matter that the motives of the so called "militant" left are, in basis, just.

Public perception matters.

And when people see militant leftists smashing people in the head with bike locks with no prior physical provocation from the Trump supporter, you better believe that shit is going to be taken in a negative light.

So you can belittle these people all you want, but at the end of the day, all of this BS hurts your cause more than it does theirs.

Keep fighting that good fight, though.

On his next podcast, on Feb. 3, he spent 12 minutes on the topic “I wish I voted for Trump.” (The video of his podcast has had 42 views as of the time of this writing, two of which were by this reporter.) “Is there any greater endorsement than to be fought against by all those that are part of the establishment?” he began.

All Republicans I know who abstained from voting or voted for Gary Johnson started leaning hard into Trump one he won the election.

Spoiler: their definition of "good" is skewed and detached from reality.

You pick the whole package, racism and bigotry included. No cherry picking is excusable. And just because you don't do something with malice doesn't mean there is no harm done.

KKK members are probably very nice to each other and other white people too. Doesn't make them generally good people.

Agreed, you don't get to choose why you voted for trump. You get all that comes with trump, whether you want it or not. And when one of those things is racism, guess what? You support racism now. Now own that shit, trump supporters.

The resistance? Who controls Congress and the presidency? Some of you assert that you want the impossible and when you obviously can't get it, you toss the blame.

Is this a self-fulfilling prophecy? Do you actively find something you know isn't possible to latch onto so that you can tell others and yourself "I told you so" and feel validated?

It's funny because people would rebuttal "Well what about your vote for Obama and all those drone attacks?" and people would respond, "Well I own that. Since I voted for him."

There is a serious disconnect from only one side that you can vote for a person and only be attached to their positive promises and actions.

"Grab her by the pussy"

That's locker room talk you liberal snowflake.

It just comes down to these people rather suffer as along as they perceive SJW or whatever are suffering as well. Same pathology as suicide bombers. They will get their wish

Sure they're less embarrassed, but there's still a high stigma connected to it I think, so there's still reason why people wouldn't openly admit it I think.

The thing about tolerance, the bit where it's an awkward catch-22 which is being milked reasonably successfully by the right, is the fact that it's so easy to present it as one-sided; "You are not tolerating my views, it is you who is intolerant".

The thing is, though, that argument is itself inherently self-centred; it's viewing things absolutely in terms of just the person espousing that view. But there's two groups involved; the person expressing the intolerant viewpoint, and the group of people attacked by that intolerant viewpoint.

Criticising intolerance is defending those attacked by the intolerance.

And the real kicker: Failing to recognise that is in itself demonstrating bigotry.

You're not basing that off this article, which says there aren't a lot of them, we can't even poll them but here's 5 people so let's act like that is a meaningful trend we can learn from, are you?

I have more twitter followers than that one dude has views, no one asked me( most of them are porn bots)

Just about everyone stood up. Some went to the airports, others were trying to get to CBP officials for explanation, it was an EO so thier action was limited in effect and it needed the court to step in.

Says a lot about the level of discourse.

Being that this is a forum and some users tend to post a lot, you do notice posting trends, specifically certain posters that tend to post in Trump's defense a lot or post against Democrats and never say a sour word against Republicans.

I guess certain people would prefer we not notice these trends.

Not a mod, just a bot.
We don't have any numbers, and there's no indication this is at all representative of anything except these random people that self-selected, but we're going to pretend this is a trend with importance anyway!
