My experience thus far:
I hated the controls at first, but that was because I tried playing with a keyboard instead of a controller...mistake. Once I played with a controller, it felt better, but the handling did feel slippery overall.
I'm a huge fan of big maps, and I thought the cities were certainly varied enough. I can't say that I've been to Detroit or Chicago, but I have been to Miami, Las Vegas and LA, and felt that they were appropriately portrayed.
Unfortunately, I have no uPlay friends so I never got to form a crew with anyone. Whenever I see someone online, they're usually completely out of my view and I only see their icon, and then when I get to the city they're gone... hmm. Are you not supposed to see players unless you're in a Crew? That would sort of defeat the purpose.
The story, blech. I tried to ignore in the beginning until it was force fed to me, so I did what it asked until I could free roam. Didn't enjoy a single bit of it. With games focusing on multiplayer content over single player, it boggles my mind that racing titles feel like they need a narrative to tie it altogether. Titanfall would have benefited from one, The Crew, would have been better without it. But alas, it was just a few missions I played.
I am impressed at the detail of interiors, but I guess that all depends on how many cars are in the game (not sure if this has been announced or not).
I have a strange amount of pop-in happening when I drive. A lot with shadows, but also a ton with road obstacles, like those yellow barrels. Don't know if this is a beta issue but hope that gets fixed.
