The DS in 2006

I'm on the verge of buying one. There are a handful of games that I'd pick up this year, but I'm curious as to what to expect in 2006.

Zelda DS - is this by Nintendo or Capcom?
New Super Mario Bros
Metroid Dread

That's all that comes to mind. Also coincidentally enough 'the big three'.

What else [that interests you]?

I'm holding out for a redesign and a special edition. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three or more times and I start to get a little pissed off at myself, at Nintendo, at pretty much everybody, and I have to break something to calm down.

Plus I didn't really find the current design all that comfortable to use.

That's fair, but I'd rather get the DS now and just swallow the $30 or so when I trade it in for an updated one.

Which, btw, I don't think is inevitable. I'm not sure what they'd change.

In 2006? Well, hopefully that promised Square Enix support actually shows up. An online Crystal Chronicles would be pretty sweet. Bringing over Slime Morimori would be even better. There's Pokemon as well, if you're into that.

second gen DS games are gonna be something else. it's then that we'll be able to get a good idea of what kinds of innovation we can truly expect to see in future game design.

Can you give any examples of this, or are you merely speculating?

I contacted Bandai about that Full Metal Alchemist game for the DS too... We may actually see it come overseas. Anyway, most of the DS games we know about are those scheduled for release this year. Maybe we'll get some insight on some new titles at TGS. However, there are 3 Pokemon games scheduled to be released in December in Japan, so if you take into consideration a translation time frame, with the two RPGs... that makes 5 DS Pokemon games in 2006 for the U.S. Damn....

OH LORD please, FMA

Square Enix was showing FMA DS themselves at E3 behind closed doors. Word is they canned Egg Monster Heroes in favor of it.

I want Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Blue Team and Slime Morimori Dragon Quest 2 in english!

Agreed. I think a redesign of the DS is less likley with the touch screen and all.

I think New Super Mario Bros. might actually be coming this year. From Perrin Kaplan trying to convince us that Zelda hasn't left a gap over at IGN:

"Add to this a plethora of great DS games, the launch of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and several Wi-Fi games (Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing DS, etc.), plus the launch of Micro (which will be hot!), and there is a lot for consumers to choose from."

She doesn't mention the title specifically, but it seems clear what she's talking about.

I asked craig about this yesterday and he said it isn't likley since Mario and Luigi 2 is coming this year, and nintendo likes to spread out 1st party titles.

You know what....you know what...I read Micro as Mario.

Sorry.

Damn this lemonade must have a lot of gin in it...

I'd expect we'd see New Super Mario Bros. next year, if not late next year, depending on what kind of software Nintendo has lines up for Christmas 2006 (Zelda, Metroid, Smash Bros.?)

I'm looking forward to a localized release of Harvest Moon, and more or less whatever Nintendo releases in the time frame. I think that with this Fall's lineup (Advance Wars, M&L2, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing) plus the backlog of Wario, Kirby, etc., there's plenty of reason for fans of Nintendo First-Party titles to pick up the system. Plus, it's the one thing that is most definitely guaranteed to come over the next couple of years.

While that $149.99 Amazon.ca prize is really quite tempting, I'm not sure if I want to spend the money right now. I mean, I have it and could probably spend it pretty easily, but with no Zelda I'd rather grab one for Christmas and there might even be some sort of bundle by then, who knows.

Natsume's planning Harvest Moon DS for late this year (it's suppossed to release alongside the PS2 AWL Special Edition). It could always slip into early next year, but as of now it's a Q4 2005 release.

I wouldn't be surpised if Viewtiful Joe and Guilty Gear will slip back into 2006. Not that either are big sellers. But it seems possible. Also both could have online added. That would be sweat.
