Here in poland easily 90% of chicks(at least attractive ones) will tell u gaming is biggest red flag of a man, so if u wanna score u sure do ur best to hide/minimize ur gaming hobby, and im pretty sure its similar(maybe not as bad but pretty bad still) in the west too :P

Ofc if its ur family/buddies coming over its different for obvious reasons :)

Thankfully that isn't the case in the UK (or at least in London). I've found dating and gaming to be quite compatible here.
 
Me as a 39 year old if I see you play ur switch 2 in public I would politely ask you can I sit with u and watch what ur playing.

U use ur phone to do business, if woman sees u gaming on ur phone its almost as bad as playing ur handheld- obviously handheld is worse coz its dedicated gaming machine aka for pleasure/entertainment only, yeh.

When u are on a call or hell even check something on the net/watch something in english(like neogaf) at least u can brag ur english is good enough to do that, when u playing games u are nothing but a child in the woman eyes, and ofc she wants nothing to do with a child(ofc rare exception gigachad like Henri Cavil is excluded, so once u look even 50% like him and have 10% of his status/wealth im sure girls will want u no matter what u do, otherwise no chance ;p ).
 
The only time when I play on the Steam Deck in public is once I have found my seat on a flight or train. I don't play when I am at the airport or station as I will be too busy listening for any important announcements.

Might be time to start doing things to change your POV - go to a con or game concert or event where people are not afraid to appear different than what you feel society expects.

Yes, they are different, going to a con vs getting on a plane business class. But you know what? You're going to die. You only have so many years to live, and if you spend them all making other people think you're cool, and that's what you want to die with, then be happy doing that.

I don't have a handheld console, but you know? I see a person playing with it in public as cool and funny (and not in a bad or embarrasing way) since I have memory. So no, I wouldn't, and you shouldn't either :) .

Bought the og switch and took a train ride to DC to see the cherry blossoms 3 days after launch. Set it up on the table in the general seating amtrak area and had people coming up all day to check it out.

I'm 43 now. Never had a problem ever since I had my gba. Ive liked "nerdy" stuff my entire life and eventually society launches onto it. Rpgs, lotr, video games... none of these were mainstream growing up. So fuck it, I'm gonna game respectfully in public and everyone will just ignore me

I don't find gaming inappropriate. What I find inappropriate for my age is consoles and the certain games and demographics associated with them.

Don't care about girls or what anyone thinks. Played NDS on the bus all the time and I met cool people all playing Mario Kart and Pokemon. Even got to set up things like Mario Kart tournaments and it was a blast.

If a guy playing video games is a red flag then any girl wearing cute clothes or buying plush dolls is a red flag as well.

If a girl is gonna mock you for your hobby then the girl isn't for you. And more often then not it's a matter of "guy devotes more time to video games then he does to me UGH".

I'd much rather be myself then try to be something I think the other person is looking for. But hey what do I know.

Im not telling u to act one way or another, im just telling u what maximizes success, same way u theoritically could split check 50-50 on a date, but just keep in mind the consequences of such an action are nasty for u- her coochie dries up right away after u arent willing to pay for the date fully- no separate checks, no splitting 50/50 etc, none of that soyboy liberal bullshit unless ofc u find girl looking unattractive/disgusting and dont wanna see her ever again/dont wanna smash- then by all means cut ur losses :P

Ofc some guys dont give a damn about this stuff, maybe they already got a gf/fiance/wifey or decided juice isnt worth the squeeze, im just saying gaming in public on a dedicated device has very negative effect on picking up girls, thats all, so its valid concern for teenagers/young males coz what guy wanna be right away deemed as unattractive kid/weirdo.

Thread topic/og statement/question was about playing with a handheld console in public after all, so u gotta admit that its way more embarrasing/perceived as childish by society, no hate from me, just sayin, bro- personally here in poland in my smalltown of 30k citizens i never saw any1 with any handheld console in the wild, hell i kept my gameboy back in the 90s to home usage or 1h+ traveling by train and even then i got weird looks from ppl who saw me doing this- and i was teenager back then, not even an adult so it was considered "age appriopiate" back then :)

Who in the fuck cares what they think? Are you playing games to impress people?

If a woman judges me based on my hobby then I'm not interested to be with them in the first place.

I agree with you. So what, are we supposed to stop enjoying things just to impress someone? Even if you hide the fact that you are a gamer just to impress a girl, at some point, if you start dating, she will find out. or are we supposed to give up on our hobbies forever?

If you have to hide the stuff you enjoy just to impress someone, that person isn't worth it.

It's like this everywhere, it's just that this is a gaming forum and people are biased.

A man who spend hours a day watching sports or playing games is a big no-no for most women. No one wanna live with people like that.
 
Any embarrassment I could've felt playing a handheld gaming device was gone when smartphones became ubiquitous.

If anyone would ask me why I was playing one, I'd ask "have you ever played a game on your phone?", and if their answer is "yes", my response: "cool, I just wanted to do the same thing with better controls".

If a person gets that uptight about it, they're just filtering themselves out of my life. Benefit of getting older is you get to leave the childish mentality of pretending to be someone else around other people to try to fit in.

Bro, woman will disqualify a guy based just on a color of his shirt or type of shoes he is wearing, hell they will disqualify u based on ur star sign(pr0 tip, find out her star sign and have 3 different star signs u can tell her u are-based on "star sign compatibility", tons of women belive in that astrology shit so ofc if u are on a hunt u gotta make sure things are going in ur favour ;P ), judging person based on a hobby is at least logical and has some merit :)

In healthy relationship they dont have like same hobby as each other but they do have to accept for who they are, if they cant then its never going to work out, simple as that.
