The first real semi-credible source about Revolution

Looks like an online magazine site seems to think they have the inside scoop on the Nintnedo Revolution controller. Sounds interesting, and I sure hadn’t thought of this, yet somehow if this is all the controller is, I would feel a bit let down. Quote from Computer Games Magazine:

“It's revolutionary in the same two senses that controller rumble is/was revolutionary: first, it's kind of actually not a huge deal, but controllers will eventually all have it because it is pretty neat; and second, it involves revolving. Simply, the Revolution controller will provide resistance to being tilted. No doubt this is done by some application of a tilt sensor such as the one in WarioWare: Twisted combined with rumble technology.

After all, rumble is just done by some off-balance widgets inside the controller spinning really fast. If they were balanced, they could provide enough rotational inertia— the same thing that makes bikes and motorcycles harder to tilt the faster they're going— to perform this trick.

The "could" is why Nintendo hasn't come out with it yet. Yeah, they say they don't want it to be copied, which is valid because I'm sure it will be, just not anytime soon. What's really happening is Nintendo is trying to make this work with wireless controllers, finding the optimal tradeoff between spinning the widgets fast enough to produce a good, strong effect and keeping the controller from eating batteries too quickly. Oh, and it has to be cheap and reliable, too.”

sounds reasonable. I still want to see what the thing looks like if it's supposed to be able to play all the past Nintendo games as well.

This was said a longass time ago here (in the thread about Miyamoto giving hints or something). Then again, so were a lot of things. Someone was bound to get it right.

I think this was posted in the Wednesdayton thread, but since no-one will see it in there that's alright, I guess.

Sounds very unexciting, so it's probably true. Wonder if the controller will have a disc shape then?

Hehe that sounds pretty cool. It's something MORE than PS3/X360, I'm not even excited at all to see those systems. It's all about Nintendo for me when it comes to innovation (even though a lot of "innovation" I could care less for, i.e. DS :P).

It makes sense (already rumored before btw), and seems quite nice. Much more that those awful hypotesis about a controller that forces you to swing your arms in the air to play. I hope it will end up being something like the Cube controller, with this "gyro-feedback" built-in.

I hope thats not it. At least give us more than that.

Whats the big deal? A built in force feedback steering wheel? With no anchor point so actually difficult to use as a steering wheel? For the one platform with almost no racing games at all?

I don't care if its an octopus controller, or it reads minds, or projects holograms. But Nintendo have used 'revolution' and are letting it stick in peoples minds. At least try and deliver a tiny part of that in the final machine.

I wonder what directions the resistance works in? I guess it could be kind of cool, something like a force feedback fishing controler is just one of the uses that comes to mind. Pulling levers in Zelda games is another possible application, it would give you a real sense of force in theory.

I'm sure developers will come up with something, but as usual Nintendo will get the most out of it. At least it doesn't seem as slapped together as the DS.

That doesn't sound revolutionary.

And if nintendo is hiding the controller because they don't want the competition stealing their ideas, how come that site knows the secret? It's only possible if they're about to reveal it soon (got leaked early... doesn't sound like nintendo) and that makes no sense - there'd be plenty of time for the competition to steal the idea if they want to.

Nintendo to move pennant chase to the revolution

You swing your controller like a bat, and when you hit the ball, it rumbles.

You heard it here first!

I don't know why but I have a 'subscription' to Computer Games Magazine... I don't get it every month, but I get it...

The weird thing: I live in México... why am I getting this magazine? :lol

Well, something is supposed to be announced soon. And Nintendo did promise that they'd completely take the veil off Revolution by the end of the year, so their competitors were always going to have some time to be able to copy them.

A analog stick on a gamepad was also nothing new it was done in the atari era. But nintendo revived it and put it back on and behold all pads have it now. Rumble another example.
Nintendo took those ideas and designed games that would work with these new pad-features.

So if this is implented in a good way...you can bet the others wil copy it. Looks at ps dualshock and the Saturn (nights) pad which got released the same time as nights.

:lol

Good idea. I like your thinking...

Perfect for racing games...

A genre we didn't have on GameCube so most probably we wont on Revolution... or maybe that's the second part of the revolution

p.s. not considering Mario Kart on Revo which would be a killer anyway ;)

Now that I think about it, that's a damn good idea.

Considering that I like baseball, I'd play a game like that in a heartbeat, only if it's solid and polished though. :P

IIRC Iwata just said something like 'we'll talk more about rev at the end of the year' and people some how turned that into a full blow revelation of everything revolution. It's still august anyway, far from the end of the year.

If there's an announcement it's probably going to be something like 'ati completed the hollywood chip' or 'nintendo announces partnership with company x or y.' meh.

Ah well. Guess we'll find out sooner or later. Anyway, I fully expect the Revolution controller to be a let down for most people. Remember that Nintendo didn't want to show Mario Sunshine becasue they didn't want their great ideas being copied.

But this isn't the revolution's main thing, it can't be. Miyamoto said it would be a new pyradimenana of entertainment. How does the reducing my ability to move my joypad up usher in this wonderful new era of games? Fucking put a chain on the joypad and hook it to a table. Revolution

Actually I'm really sure he said that Rev's big secrets etc. would be revealed by year's end.

If people are disappointed, they only have themselves to blame by hyping themselves up to such astronomical proportions that no matter what Nintendo would show they would be disappointed -- guaranteed.

thats all i ever wanted. well, that along with sega doing another fishing game of some sort. bass and marine fishing were fun on the dc with the fishing controller, but actual directional feedback like in the arcade versions makes them so much better.
if only it were possible to make it strong enough to throw the controller out of your hands. perhaps into your face, to hit people over the internet, etc.

This man speaks the truth! Ironic with that avatar. :lol

Someone tell me why this is the "first real semi-credible" news about the Rev controller....

I don't particulary care either way, I'll buy it if its a good system. However, using the word revolution for a tilt sensing controller is a but too extreme. Revolution? I think not. :lol

Because I think this is disapointing I hyped myself up too much? I don't think so. I think I was expecting something like "hey wow, why didn't I think of that?" but this is more of a "hmmmm, I hope this turns into something good." I don't know if this is true, and if this is all that makes the Revolution revolutionary, but I guess I'll wait and see how they use this in games.

Didn't Myiamoto say something that the new revolution would be perfect for Pikmin? How would this do anything for Pikmin?

You could get them to push large blocks. And by doing that you'd also be pushing the blocks in a way.

Or you can pull levers.

How fun that'd be. To pull levers and push boxes.

woohooo! If this is true, I accurately predicted it in May =)

This feature seems very "Nintendo-ish" since it keeps things simple. No new buttons or complicated layout are necessary-- its just a natural progression to force feedback, in addition to gyroscopic control. Just imagine a new wave race with a realistic sensation of waves which tilt the controller, or a Zelda game where you can swing on a grappling hook by using gyro, but gusts of wind can knock your gyro control around.. And then there's its use in games like Super Monkey Ball...

I do believe gyro + true FF could be a 'revolution' in consoles, but only if the right games show off its potential.

Power is a big issue though, which is why I doubt they could pull this off using wireless control.

I think he said something about the interface being good for a pikmin. Even if this is true: the revolution is not only the controller (sb said^^).

Maybe there's a little hole you can blow into on the controller to whistle :lol

TOOT TOOT!

argon: yeah man! how sweet would this be with waverace!

i think it'll all come down to how clever developers can be with it. similar to the rumble pack etc.

But then developers would have to actually be creative instead of churning out sequel after marginally improved sequel.

I want the ability to turn it off. Just like I do with rumble.

Also, this doesn't fit in with the whole "configurable button layout" stuff.

Who said anything about a configurable button layout? certainly not Nintendo.

IIRC Iwata just said something like 'we'll talk more about rev at the end of the year' and people some how turned that into a full blow revelation of everything revolution.

Speaking to Reuters at E3, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirms more info on Revolution before the year's end.

"We plan to give details on when we will launch it, what the price will be, what the controller will look like and how games can be played on it by the end of the year," said Nintendo's Satoru Iwata, who disregarded critism levelled against the company for not showing more of the console at E3, saying he didn't want to "to tip his hand" to rivals.

Yeah, people read way too into these things.
