* ZoE2 (I hate mechs and fucking love this game)
* BoF5 (a timed RPG with end-game ranking and combo-based battle system? Yes, please!)
* Silent Hill 2 (excellent storytelling)
* The Mark of Kri (stylistic stealth / beat-em-up game with one badass mofo in Rau)
* VF4E (a fighter so good, it teaches me how to play other fighters better)
* MGS2 (refined MGS1 stealth and fast as sin)
* MGS3 (great boss battles and excellent endgame)
* God of War (tightly packaged action game with great pacing)
* Shadow Hearts 2 (a more appealing "Final Fantasy" and much appreciated customizable Judgment Ring)

I'd also say GT4 since I'm a sucker for the genre, but the game is so so so flawed. I really haven't played a lot of ps2 games yet.

ZOE2, DMC3, MGS3, Mercenaries, Samurai Warriors
Too had to pick five, ZOE2 would be my #1. I would have said dynasty warriors until i played samurai warriors. Mercencaries takes the GTA game play but adds decent shooting and alot of ways to do things, i would have said GTA:SA until i played Mercenaries. DMC3 is the best game of it's type ever, a beatemup that takes skill and lets you get real creative. MGS3 is just great, i liked the series a little before it but the CQC makes the game special, i hope the really expand the CQC system in 4.
I've never owned so many games for a console, but still haven't played so many staples of the system. I'm no rush for the next gen.

I'm going over my list now
1) SMT:N - one of the best games I've ever played, think pokemon style gampley with a mature story, fuck awesome art direction, great soundtrack and you have the best RPG on PS2
2)MGS3 - after being a little disappointed with MGS2 I didn't have the highest expectations for this one, but oh boy did this game blew me away. CQC rocked, the story was beautiful and the ending a stuff of legends.
3)Gradius V - granted I bought it a couple of weeks ago, but fuck it this game rocks so fucking much, amazing visuals to complement an almost perfect gameplay. the game is very challenging but so much fun. I feel fucking invisible when I have 4 multiples plus laser plus missles plus force fields plus speedx3 and blasting my way through levels
4)DMC3 - the king of actions games, not only can you kick an insane amount of ass in the game but you can look good while doing it, pulling off insane combos is such a gratifying experience that only DMC3 can deliver.
5)ZOE2 - I love love love this game, beautiful visual awesome soundtrack and controlling Jehuty is just a bliss I love the boss battles in this game so much, Konami did not only improve on every aspect of first ZOE they created one of the best action games ever.
