I really hope resisting the ugly nose won't do McLaren in.

I would love it if the McLaren (and the Red Bull - if it doesn't have the step-down nose) were still the fastest - the rest would have to contend with their cars being slow AND ugly.

I am so disappointed Ferrari went with that design. Surely they have more creative designers in house??

We don't know the performance of any of the cars yet. McLaren may have got it all wrong (wouldn't be the first time pre-season) and need to adopt 'le ugly'.

No disagreement... but that wasn't just what the poster was saying. :)

I agree with him on the woman front too. If I am ploughing away with my tractor on the field, I want a decent view of the landscape.

they believe aero wise this is the best solution, so it remains to be seen if McL can pull off the pretty nose.
"The nose has an ungainly shape on the top, and that is the result of the regulation that requires us to have the nose quite low but the dynamic desire to have the lower part of chassis as high as possible. Even though it is not aesthetically pleasing, we believe it is the most efficient aerodynamic solution for that area of the car.

Scarbs on the MRL low nose:

This creates less space under the raised nose, but the teams snow plough device under the nose works aggressively as a turning vane, so perhaps the team don’t need the higher chassis to get the correct airflow to the sidepods leading edge. McLaren also find the lower nose provides the classic vehicle dynamics benefits of a low CofG and a less extreme front suspension geometry. This trade off works for McLaren and goes to prove not everything in F1 has to be a compromise in search of aero advantage.

Unless Red Bull adopt the ugly nose it looks like McLaren and Red Bull will be the only good looking cars.

Also I actually think the Force India looks better than the Ferrari personally.

It was posted earlier.

And damn, those noses. Maybe with time i can learn to lo... no i cant even finish that statement. Shame too as the Force India livery is so damned nice and the Ferrari looks pretty good except for the nose.

Are they hoping the FIA won't notice?

Is the rule there that the yellow areas shouldn't contain aero devices? It *might* be above the wing height, we'd really need to see the photo from a different angle to be certain.

Edit: No, you're right. Looking at the first picture below, it certainly looks like that widget enters the front wing's forbidden space.

(First post, woo!)

Doesn't seem like we'll get many lookers this year :( The Ferrari looks horrible, but at least they seem to be trying a more radical approach. The McLaren, on the other hand, isn't the extreme car I was expecting, based on rumours, but it looks pretty good at least. Anyway, can't wait for testing to get underway, hopefully McLaren get a better start this year, sending Button to his rightful place as champion. (fanboy)

Oh and Webber is a dashing young stud!
am I doing this right?

Your mention of Webber is a nice gesture to the worshipers in this thread (all two of them), but it's okay to say that Webber is just a poor mans Button or Alonso. They know it as well.

However, the greater height beneath the nose does produce increased potential to drive airflow to the leading edge of the sidepods for more downforce.

But it also raises issues with the car's centre of gravity. To make this lower, Ferrari has innovatively opted for a pull-rod front suspension, which places the heavy metal rockers and springs lower down. The team has also reported a small aero gain for this suspension layout.

The exhausts are routed in the sidepod extensions, with exits facing backwards. It appears that Ferrari is recouping the downforce lost by the ban on blown diffusers, by blowing towards the rear suspension and brake ducts (shaded yellow in the illustration). This is a legal approach, but it will be sensitive to throttle position, as the blown engine mappings are heavily restricted this year.

Although these extensions to the sidepods appear to slope downwards, the exhaust inside is not allowed to be lower than 10 degrees from horizontal. The end of these sidepod extensions also form cooling outlets, so the new Ferrari won't be expected to use the tail funnel popular on the other cars launched so far this year.

At the rear a new gearbox casing allows Ferrari to switch to pull-rod suspension, with similar benefits to those for the front pull-rod set-up. The team confirms that its KERS remains fitted under the fuel tank and not around the gearbox, as was the case with last year's Red Bull.

Was there a rule put in to take out the front intake on the nose? They all looks paper thin at the tip and it looks horrible.

The Ferrari is fucking hideous. Not as hideous as the Shiterham but that's like choosing between rabies and Ebola.

Oh man, um yeah, that Ferrari better be dominate to justify that front end. Ouch. I think the rear end is pretty slick looking but the side and front profiles are a bit harsh.

Not too surprised that both Ferrari and Force India have gone with the platypus nose, people need to remember that the MP4-27 bodywork is essentially a slightly modified MP4-26, they already had a low nose last year so this year is just an evolution of that.

From what we've seen so far, the McLaren looks very impressive and the Ferrari looks far more impressive than I expected. Now for the Red Bull swansong.

Quick and dirty comparison (not 100% accurate, dont shout at me :(

Are there any picture of the Force india from above yet?

Shouldnt nose tips be exactly even? Did McL not go as high as possible with theirs?

I guess the angle of the picture is off.

Nope, maximum height of front bulkhead part is 625 mm and maximum nose height is 550 mm above the reference plane.
Mclaren is only 580 mm high at front, so they they make lower nose (530 mm) and still have enough of airflow below.
