If they didn't have any game trailers or announcements and only focused on awards, as the name implies, that number would've been significantly lower.
The lackluster views for the Golden Joystick Awards are proof that most people don't give a shit about the awards outside of bragging rights for GOTY.

I'm unsure how Geoff and his people can find a balance between properly awarding and honoring devs and marketing new games. It's just such a bizarre format for a program.

Geoff Keighley needs to let the people no one knows or is interested in talk longer on the mic. Geoff Keighley is doing it wrong. Record numbers be damned!

Yup. Everyone is bitching about award winners not getting enough time, but the entire reason this event is popular in the first place is because of the reveals, not because of the awards.

If you want to watch an awards show that's strictly focused on awards, watch the DICE Awards alongside the other 12 people that watch it.

I think most people would agree that their watching is (at least) 70% for the reveals/trailers and 30% for the awards.

The problem is calling it an "Awards Show" and literally giving the Awards portion something like 10 minutes time in a 180 minutes show.
