the games that will endure

What games from this generation do you think will endure?
I ask this because we all know that the various repackaged rereleases on GBA and the classic compillations on the consoles tend to not all age equally. Plus, lets face it, a lot of those 32 bit games that were getting great reviews just sort of suck by todays standards.
So, what games will you wager on picking up and enjoying five years from now?

RE4?! nu-uh!!

This game will age HORRIBLY, mark my words.

Games very art-heavy or with an execptionally distinctive art-style will stand the test of time. Wind Waker comes to mind...

EDIT: Oops, someway or another I read the word "graphically", discard this reply

Metroid Prime
FFVII (I know its old but ages well)
The Wind Waker
SSB Melee (Doesn't need to be pretty as its a blast)
DK:JB (Will prob get better with age, as a retreat from over powered crap from EA in 10yrs)

Way too much Nintendo in this thread already.

JSRF
PDO
HALO
Skies of Arcadia
PSO
Virtua Fighter 4/evo
Soul Calibur
Sonic Adventure 1/2
and yes, Shenmue 1/2

I could play any of these games right now.. drool.. stupid work..

Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando will stand the test of time, I think.

Beyond Good & Evil should too. Has that magic Rayman 2 had.

When I hear the words "stand the test of time" ... I still think of games like SMB3/SMW, Zelda, or FFV/Chrono. Games that are still played/popular today.

I really don't see any game this generation that will still have the same kind of effect 15 years from now as those games.

I think the better games of this gen , while they'll look bad in comparison with future gens' games, they'll at least still be stomachable enough to play, unlike many 32/64-bit games even now. For instance, FFX will look dated, but it'll never be so to the insane degree that FFVII is. RE4 will look dated, but not as much as RE1 does now.
LOL! That looked dated before it was even released.

I love the new look "Realda" but I think WW will age better in years to come. Sort of like how I think Mario 64 is one of the best looking games on the N64 and really stands the test of time better then a lot of the later more realistic games. They just come across as muddy with shitty textures. Mario 64 looks extremely "clean" and easy on the eyes still. Most N64/PSX games are so bad to look at now.

Probably by those same people who buy PS2s and GTA3 to be cool because they can't be seen playing a "kiddy" game like "Celda".

I HATE the way the new Zelda looks. It looks so generic, plus it's charm has totally gone away. PA said it best with their PoP:WW "I smolder with generic rage" comment

Games just don't endure.. you look back in five years and think "Damn! That game was great!" but when you actually try to play them, they look like shit - memory serves as a great filler, but facing up to the real thing is an ugly experience.

Games age and they always show it poorly.

That's why I hoard my old games but try to avoid playing them..

Nintendo's just cashing in on the Lord of teh Rings movies here. Good move. This is how a mature zelda should look (WW was good for young link)

I'd give a nod to these games standing the test of time:

Bombastic
Alien Hominid
Chu Chu Rocket
Bangai-O
Disgaea

:)

-SSBM
-Wind Waker (graphically)
-Monkey Ball
-RE4 (for the same reason many people still play single-player Doom)
-Some good 2D and 3D fighters
-Anything that has fun, addictive multiplayer w/ relatively simplistic graphics (think Bomberman, Mario Kart, etc.)

IMO, the series with the best longevity is Bomberman (multiplayer) thanks to its simple/ clean appearance, great/addictive gameplay, low learning curve, and quick matches. The SNES iterations are timeless and easily stand on their own to this day.

What if you purchased GTA3 because it's a genuinely good game, HM?

That's a damn shame, because the new Zelda looks fucking awesome. I'm with you, I love the Wind Waker visuals... they were "charming", as you said. But I think the new Zelda has a different type of charm. Ocarina of Time was a great game, and this new Zelda is like a next gen version of that graphical style - something I can only compliment. They've done a good job. All hyperbole aside, it is NOT like Link is wandering around listening to Godsmack and cutting his wrists while he rips out some poor wandering beasts heart. Don't exaggerate. To try to cut the comparrisons thin, "Real" Zelda is about as "angsty" as the LOTR world, which is to say that it's not really dark for the reasons of marketing. It's dark because the world happens to be dark when the evil forces take hold.

You dont play the graphics, you play the game. The core gameplay and story of Kotor will be enjoyable for years to come.

I don't think too many games will stand the test of time this gen, some of the failed in sales games of the soo-called niche gen. The few and last 2D shm'ups adn Komani games on PS2.

Panzer: Orta over the long haul maybe.

I can see someone picking up Burnout 3 in a few years and still getting some grins from the crash mode.

Personally, I haven't touched it in months, though.

I'm gonna say Halo 2 and Metroid Prime...

I tried playin Halo about 2 weeks ago and just couldn't get into it,the second is so much better control/design wise, just a stunning difference.
