The Godfather part 2 is vastly superior to The Godfather

Mister Apoc

Demigod of Troll Threads
i love both films, but now that I think about it... Part 2 is vastly superior to part 1

part 1 was sort of a romanticized tale of organized crime of a deal gone bad.... part 2 was bigger in scale, more epic, more sprawling. It showed the true harsh reality of organized crime and also seemed deeper in philosophical undertones

In my mind it's just one long ass movie with a fan fiction epilogue starring Andy Garcia and Sophia Coppola.

I liked the first best. It's more entertaining and the actors are better. Look, I love Pacino in both of them, but in the second movie he was strictly a stereotype. The acting is better in the first all around.

Both are masterpieces.
The second one is also memorable thanks to the Cazale' s performance.
But i prefer the first one, Brando and Pacino were amazing.

There's far more meat on part 2 than the original (which is still a masterpiece). Fans mention Brando's performance elevating it above 2 but come on, Al Pacino owns both

It's a hilarious statement once you realize that both parts actually form one (very long) movie. Without the character development started in part one, the whole story would be basically pointless.
Both movies are about the descent of Michael Corleone from a naive WW2 veteran who despises organized crime and only has eyes for his girlfriend, into an actual leader of a crime family
who in the end is willing to sacrifice even his big love for the power he gained.

I like the performances in 1 better. Especially Brando. The first is film is iconic.
Just watched both Part 1 and Part 2. I never made it past the wedding scene in Part 1, and never watched Part 2. Now both movies are instantly one of my favorite ones.

I have to say that while Brando's is one of the more iconic performances of all time I prefer Michael's slow transition into mafia kingpin.

Vito parts of 2 > 1 > Michael parts of 2. It's all gold though.

Best scene from Godfather 2:

Have watched the film several and times and still forgot about that ending so jumped.

Brilliant. And yup Sicily is that colour grade. Nice, tranquil, but very dangerous.

Took my own life in hands heading there as the missus used to be with a gangster. She was deperately worried I'd be killed. And here I am still shit-posting.

It is better. Certainly one of the cases where the sequel is better than the original, but vastly superior? No.

as long as we all agree that the 3rd one is trash we have no arguments for you
Third was actually good just the fact that Duval was missing and the daughter couldn't act for shit.

And you could argue is slightly better but "vastly" no way. Part 1 is phenomenal

I don’t know, the second one just never clicked with me the way the first did. I’d even go as far as to say I *gasp*, don’t really enjoy part two. It just feels like more of a standard mob movie aside from the flashback parts(which are great of course)and puts me to sleep. Part one to me is just so powerful with its strong focus on familial love and duty. It presents the corruption of Michael in a way that is relatable to the audience, and of course the acting is superb all around.

Well, maybe I'll finally watch it. I saw Part 1 a few years ago and thought it was pretty good, but I wasn't exactly compelled to move forward, especially with my expectations having been so high for the first one.

The second film is an impressive feat with many different elements in play, but I prefer the first film as a whole. It has a momentum and a focused development that seals it beautifully as a self-contained film, whereas the second one feels like "more scenes and vignettes of life in the crime family" or, perhaps feels a bit like what would have been a season-long prestige drama today, but edited down to a single sitting.

I refuse to watch 3, never have and never will.

You and me both. I'll die never having seen it.
