Wasting no time distancing himself from President Bush on an issue that has long divided them, Senator John McCain yesterday called the White House stance on climate change "terribly disappointing" and said inaction in the face of mounting scientific data was unjustified.

Two weeks after the end of a campaign in which he stumped for Mr. Bush's re-election, Mr. McCain, Republican of Arizona, is convening a Senate hearing today on the human effect on climate and what to do about it.

Mr. Bush, citing the cost to the economy and what the administration describes as the uncertainty of the science, has opposed restrictions on carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases since early 2001, when he abandoned a pledge he made in his first presidential campaign to restrict carbon dioxide from power plants.

In contrast, for three years Mr. McCain has pushed for a bill he wrote with Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, Democrat of Connecticut, that would create the first, modest curbs on greenhouse gases.

"This is a very time-sensitive issue," he said in an interview yesterday.

Dana M. Perino, a White House spokeswoman, said that Mr. Bush saw climate change as a serious issue but that he favored using voluntary means to slow the growth of greenhouse gas emissions, as "a first step in an aggressive strategy to meet the challenge of long-term global climate change."

McCain suffers from multiple personalities. I'll take what I can get though. Any legitimate criticism of the administration is good criticism in my book.

Good on McCain to blast the Bush administration on that, not that it'll do much good. One of the worst things about having Bush back for another term is that environmental issues are just going to be totally ignored once again. God if I see another one of those speeches where he pushes "clean" coal technology again....

George W. Bush. Considered to be the most environmentally-friendly president by the Mentally Insane (Daily Show bit there) :)

Bush's Environmental Record

When they announced that they were going to include hatchery-raised salmon when considering endangered-species status, I wanted to roll my eyes back 360. OMG what are these people thinking.

Uh, skip McCain. He puts politics/party over principles. The only reason he's seen by the left as "one of them in disguise" is because he has a shred of integrity. A trait which most sitting members of the right do not make home to.

Every time I see him supporting Bush, that integrity level drops. Honestly, I don't know if I can trust him after he campagined so hard for Bush.

Yeah, the guy has to wait until after the election to speak out. Hello Mr. McCain... there might be a greater chance of environmental policies changing had Bush been defeated....

His stance on abortion, unfortunately, precluded any support for Kerry during the election. And I doubt the RNC made it easy for him to simply abstain altogether.

I doubt that is the entire reason.. he wants the nomination, and turning on the party now would make it harder for him next time around. Dont get me wrong, Im still horribly disapointed in him, I hope his integrity was worth the presidency to him, because thats what he cost himself.

There's no way he's getting the nomination now. What the heck was he thinking? Guliani for 2008 I guess.

McCain never was in the running for 2008. He'll be in his 70s, and would get mauled in the primaries due to his opposition to the FMA eariler this year.

That being said, it's a good preemptive salvo to start the ANWR battle that's upcoming in the Senate next Feb. That's going to get ugly fast and it will be a good gauge as to how well the Democratic party plays opposition politics with their new leadership.

I don't know if it was posted anywhere, but the Dems chose Reid from Nevada as their new minority leader in the Senate today. I don't foresee much in the way of fight from him; the Dems really need to pick someone from a safe state like Mass., NY, or Illinois that doesn't have to worry about being vulnerable.

If so, it's going to be interesting to see how Guliani will pander to the religious right.
