The ignored DS game that came out this week.

XBLAnnoyance
Pac N' Roll, I am wondering if anybody here has actually bought, played, or even noticed that this game came out this week since it has and no doubt contiuned to be drowned by the deluge that is the tandem of Nintendogs and Advance Wars: Dual Strike.

John TV wrote some stuff about it that made me not want it right away.

It seems like a test run for DS katamari if you ask me.

I picked it up today and it's delightfully... average. Maybe it's because I'm on a Nintendogs/Advance Wars kick, but I just wasn't instantly hooked. I'll keep you posted,

Definently gonna take it for a rent, just like I did with Pac-Pix. Fun,short, disposable. Probably will be good for a weekend.

It's a little bit like Marble Madness I suppose, but it's nothing much like it to be honest. It's a decent game, I've had a great deal of fun with it. Personally I would wait until it's a bit cheaper before picking it up if I could turn back time, but it's decent and it's something a bit different so it's worth picking up at some point.

I bought it today.

I wasn't really expecting a great game out of this. I just wanted a good "platformer." So far, this gets the job done.

The story unwravels before you start playing and it's definitely the worst part of the game so far. The characters do use that Banjo-Kazooie-esque type of talk only in this game it seems more limited. The text went a bit slow for my liking but why the hell should I care?

It's a damn Pac-Man game. I'm not playing it for the story.

I haven't played Marble Madness, but seems like a 3D Kirby: Canvas Curse or Super Monkey Ball game.

There's this boost move that you perform by quickly sliding the stylus from one point of the screen to another. I'm still not used to it and I fear for my DS's screen but besides that everything's okay.

I just beat level 2-2 right now and the difficulty is rising slowly. I got the game because I heard later on it gets pretty difficult. I also just onlocked some Challenge thing for level 1-4, I believe. I tried the time trial on the first level (all it was was a straightaway), but the time trial throws in boxes and enemies at certain spots. I missed getting the gold by like 15 seconds. :(

It seems like there's quite a bit to do in this game. I'm looking forward to the original Pac-Man arcade game.

Oh, and the first world is a castle and the second is in a forest. I don't think the music changes each level, only each world, but it's not really a downfall. I actually found myself humming the Forest World music while I was walking my dog (real dog, not Nintendog :) )

Any idea as to how long the game is? What about in terms of extra stuff, modes, multiplayer?

Anyone unlocked the original Pac-Man? How does it handle, since it uses top and bottom screens.

Is it anything like Marble Madness by MB/Rare on NES?

This might be nitpicking here, but...you're aware Marble Madness wasn't originally created by either Milton Bradley or Rare, right?

Just want to clear that up, because lately I've seen several people attributing Marble Madness to either Rare or Electronic Arts. Those companies were only responsible for certain conversions of the game, not the original arcade game itself.

I've probably been playing it for 45 minutes-1 hour or so and I just beat the second world (I believe it's out of five). Each level (usually five per world) has one gem and all the pellets to collect, as well as a Challenge mode and time trial. I've only done one Challenge and one time trial so far, but they aren't things you can get on your first, or maybe even second try.

I'm expecting the levels to get a big bigger and longer. I can beat the first world in 10 minutes if I wanted to now that I think about it.

There is no multiplayer in the game.

I'd give you impressions on the classic Pac-Man if I unlocked it, but I'm kind of telling myself not to play it so much. I just want a fun platformer that I can pick up here or there. I could probably beat the game in two days but I want to stretch it out longer. With my purchase of Nintendogs and Sigma Star Saga, I can probably do that.

Oops, you must have me confused with JonnyRam or someone like that. I haven't played Pac 'N Roll yet (though I do want to try it).

Saying who DID make the original arcade game would make your reply a lot less pointless.

That's the exact same reason I imported this game. Actually, my girlfriend is playing (now and then) the main mode, beating the levels, and I just replay them for the gems. I also play the Time Attack and Challenge modes. She is at world 5 and is getting pretty difficult for her.

The original PacMan is the first extra I got unlocked (10 or 15 gems I believe. There are 128 in the game) and it plays ok. I can assure you this is emulated from the original rom. The screen is divided, but the half part of the maze (where the left-right warp is) is displayed on both screens, so you can always see the ghosts coming.
The second extra is the level from the original E3 2004 demo. BTW, it has come a long way since then - take a look:

There's a third extra waiting to be unlocked.

It was created by Mark Cerny when he was just 17. The guy's gone on to many other games, including Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter, among many others.

Wow, I gotta say, that unlockable E3 demo is a kickass extra.

More games should do cool things like that.

(i.e. Put the original RE4 up until it was canned as an unlockable in RE4 PS2 and I'll buy three copies.)

But yeah, I'll pick this up when I can. Few other games I need to catch up with first though.

I'm having a ton of fun with this game. I have both Dual Strike and Nintendogs (got it two weeks ago as an advanced copy), but Pac 'n Roll just delivers a much more unique experience. It's what Mario 64 is to Mario 3 for the Pac-Man series. In fact, the game just draws a lot of inspiration from Mario 64, such a huge sprawling levels and lush green fields.

I'm only on the third world at this point but it's developing very well. This was one of the DS games I've been anticipating since E3 2004 and it delivers on all my expectations.
