"During another war, the president and Mrs. Wilson canceled all social do's at the White House plus all events for his 1917 inauguration. The Capitol swearing-in was restrained. In 1945, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, feeling anything else inappropriate during wartime, canceled every inaugural-related program. His quiet swearing-in, the only time in history, was on the south portico of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Dubya's is the most expensive four-day hooley since 1776. Budgets for Homeland Security, Army, Navy and Air Force all got tapped. Security alone, give or take a few bucks, is $45 million. Per Government Services Administration, updated on Dec. 31, fat cats helping fund about 15 mil's worth for next week's party include:
Michael Dell of Texas $250,000; Boone Pickens of Texas $250,000; the Hunt family of Texas $250,000; folk named Nancy and Rich Kinder of Texas $250,000; Time Warner $250,000; Ford Motor Company $250,000; Exxon Mobil $250,000; Occidental Petroleum $250,000; United Technologies Corp. $250,000; Home Depot $250,000; First Data Corp. $250,000; Chevron Texaco $250,000; Nat'l Ass'n of Homebuilders $250,000; Marriott Int'l $250,000; Marriott Vacation Club Int'l $250,000; Ritz Carlton Hotel Co, LLC $250,000; Altria Corporate Services of NY $250,000; Microsoft a puny $100,000; a New York entry listed as office of the commissioner of baseball $100,000. Assorted donors from brother Jeb's Florida dredged up $650,000.
Inflation would, theoretically, make each succeeding inaugural celebration increase in cost from the previous ones. No. George Herbert Walker Bush's 1989 job outdid Reagan and Clinton swearing-ins. And this one's king of the hill."
