The IRS gave me more than I claimed.

Did that happen to anyone else this year?

They explained it was a credit that I hadn't claimed. It more than doubles the refund I thought I was going to get, which was low anyway because my summer coop wasn't taking out enough Federal.

I will be cashing this bitch with the quickness, but some small part of me can't help feeling like I'm being se up.

Yes. Happened to me last year. At first, I thought we owed the IRS because it was listed as -$###.##, but after calling them up, it was because of a tax rebate that we had either forgotten to claim or had only partially claimed.

This topic makes me wonder what happened to that guy who got the $4 million dollar return even though it was more money than he earned his whole life

They will get it back from you eventually. I'd expect a smaller refund next year. What sort of credit was it? If the college credit then all is probably well.

If you inquired and they said it was all right, then you should be fine... right?

Not always the case. I know of a situation where more money was given back than they were supposed to and after calling the IRS, they insisted that it was ok and to keep it even though the person knew it wasn't. They still refused to take the money back. Well eventually the IRS realized it was a mistake and wanted their money back and on top of that taxed them for it and I believe had a small penalty even though it wasn't the person's fault. I'm not sure what happened in the end, but eventually the IRS does catch up with it.

I wish

My refund gets smaller and smaller every year

In other words they get closer and closer to taking out the correct amount from your paychecks every year.

I got royally fucked this year. Bought my first home from may dad (at market value) and just found out that buying it from a family member excludes me from the $8000 tax credit. I think it's bullshit.
