'The Last of Us: Remastered' coming to PS4, July 2014, [1080p, targeting 60 fps]

Aside from graphics, I don't see anything in Crysis that screams next-gen. That goes for the games mentioned before as well. Crysis plays like a last-gen shooter.
It was very next gen back in 2007 and to be honest I still haven't played a level like "Assault" in a shooter yet. Multiple objectives, wide open map, beautiful graphics, tons on enemies on screen. Nothing has come even close

I'm actually quite interested to see what the Remaster looks like since I thought Left Behind looked (better AA) and performed a bit better than the main game but no one ever mentioned that while ND has been really hyping up the improvements to this. I'm sure 1080/60 is the lion's share of it but I expect there to be numerous little things to look for as well.

My statement wasn't condescending. I just simply made a brief statement and didn't want to go through my entire rant over it.

When we look at games like Manhunt, it's mainly known for its shock value. Was there more to the game? Yes but it's easily overshadowed. Too much of a particular element can turn people away from some things. Look at how many people complain about how many people Nathan Drake murders in the UC titles. I love the stories in that series but the kill a thousand people does detract from the overall experience. Again, these are my opinions and if you don't agree, it's okay.

What makes TLoU different from those is that the violence wasn't sensationalized and was there to add to the authenticity of the world they (ND) created. When cannibals and the infected are part of life, violence of the unspeakable sort must accompany it as well.

Just adding to the void of insanity and retardation we've slipped into. This is what happens when no new info or footage is given and we're left to our own devices. I've seen it happen in every pre hype thread for major games leading up to release. Bioshock Infinites in particular got zany as fuck.

The thread did take a weird turn, but that was almost inevitable given the fact most of us have had to deal with a ridiculous amount of concern trolling.
And Cyborg.

Agreed. TLoU was the first game to make me uncomfortable due to the violence. It wasn't funny, it wasn't fun, it was a harsh reality of the world.

TLoU is like a GOTY edition though. Did TR have DLC included? If so, was it as significant as what we're seeing with TLoU? And GTA5 looks to have had a total overhaul, with assets being noticeably superior.

"Significance" is opinion-oriented which isn't an objective measure of value. What is though is the cost of the DLC which from the looks of it (adding up all the packs/bundles) is currently over $30 worth of stuff. That's the same amount of DLC value TLoU:Remastered claims to offer.

As for comparisons with GTA IV, here is Digital Foundry's description of the graphical changes in TR:DE.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/d...b-raider-definitive-edition-next-gen-face-off

Digital Foundry said:
Overall though, the visual differences between the two next-gen platforms are fairly minimal and we should stress that the Definitive Edition of Tomb Raider is really quite stunning to behold on both consoles, with the familiar island of Yamatai - and indeed Lara Croft herself - getting a significant graphical upgrade over the 360 and PS3 versions, extending far beyond a simple increase in resolution and frame-rate.

The first things that stand out are the changes made to Lara's head and face, which have been completely remodelled, including reworked animation that displays a wider range of emotions than before. The use of TressFX - in a new 2.0 implementation, no less - sees Lara's hair reacting to the direction of the wind, and the force of impact as she interacts with the environment - a first for consoles. Meanwhile, new material shaders and use of sub-surface scattering dynamically change the look of her skin and clothing in different lighting and weather conditions, with the texture of the skin itself changing as she gets wet, or covered in dirt and blood.

The world itself is also significantly enhanced due to the inclusion of additional foliage and objects spread across the island. Trees and plants feature physics-based properties that react to Lara as she brushes past, and sway according to the direction of the wind. Areas have also been remodelled with added geometry on some objects, while fire effects appear fuller, with more in the way of smoke and particles being rendered. Curiously, there's not really any clear indication of the proposed new lighting model - it appears that the gamma, contrast, and saturation levels have been tinkered with, but we're not seeing a dramatic change in the way that light sources are handled in the new game.

Nevertheless, the range of improvements dotted across the Definitive Edition certainly bring the treacherous island of Yamatai to life to a degree we haven't seen before in the standard game - this is a richer, more immersive environment. The question is, are we looking at genuinely new features here that represent an improvement over the significantly cheaper PC game, or are we faced with a set of compromises stemming from the dramatic makeover that has taken place?

Dunno all of the graphical changes to next-gen GTA IV but the changes in TR:DE certainly sounds impressive.

Agreed. TLoU was the first game to make me uncomfortable due to the violence. It wasn't funny, it wasn't fun, it was a harsh reality of the world.

Which I thought was a brilliant move, given the amount of heat ND drew for depicting Nathan Drake as a glib mass murderer. Never understood why that series was singled out though. The Indiana Jones movies and the games Uncharted drew its inspiration from were exactly the same.

"Significance" is opinion-oriented which isn't an objective measure of value. What is though is the cost of the DLC which from the looks of it (adding up all the packs/bundles) is currently over $30 worth of stuff. That's the same amount of DLC value TLoU:Remastered claims to offer.

TR looks like mostly skins and some weapon and map packs. That's basically what you get with the MP of TLoU, but without the SP DLC. After having played both games, to me TLoU offers more value. Opinions though, so whatever.
In regard to the graphics upgrades, I really wasn't that impressed with TR. I don't expect much more out of TLoU mind you, as they were both designed around the same RAM limitations. GTA5 however, was also designed around those same limitations, but there seems to be more room for improvement due to the wide expanses you encounter in game. More geometry, better draw distances, higher traffic and pedestrian density, better lighting, foliage, textures, etc. So, it isn't just graphics, but the gameplay itself could be altered, due to the coverage the foliage provides and the changes that will naturally occur due to higher NPC and vehicle counts.

Is there a commentary in the ps3 version? I wouldn't mind playing with commentary on ps4 version for the first run.

No commentary on PS3. It's one of the cool extra features added for PS4.

More big re-releases should do it. The only other game I saw it for was for Half Life 2 when The Orange Box released.

I'd love to hear commentary for the BioShocks or even something like Max Payne 3.

oh my god, never knew you could blow off peoples legs in mp.

original

the blood is actually gradually spreading on the cloth of his pants making it wet....my god.

Agreed but many a film and game have depicted horrid conditions without necessarily showing every detail. Leaving some details to the imagination can be more effective than showing it all on screen. The imagination can fill in the details that are left up to the viewer to fill in. I don't want to make someone change their vision. If they think that what they did was best then kudos to them for sticking with it but that doesn't mean it's beyond critique or that it was perfectly executed.

On a side note, I don't think Uncharted sensationalized the violence. It was in the same vein as Indiana Jones. Overall, TLoU isn't Manhunt but it has its moments(showing someone's legs getting blown up to chunks in MP does not help the game's story telling or gameplay).

Btw,nice debate, Hoje. I appreciate the back and forth. Some people just say screw you and walk away without proper discourse.

AWESOME! I didn't even know this. I love listening to commentary for movies, this is going to be great.

Do you dust/clean your PS4 with every new game that comes out? Pretty interesting.

My system is in a box sitting in my closet avoiding dust and awaiting a Clicker attack.

Simply nothin out there to play at the moment and Ive basically knocked out everything I have interest in anyway.

I agree, while objectively Killzone Shadow Fall is a more technically accomplished game in terms of textures, particle effects, shaders, lighting, post processing effects, resolution, framerate etc, I played KZ3 immediately after KZ SF last night and KZ3 still looked great to me!

Exactly. You´re right when you say that Shadowfall is objectively better in terms of everything you mentioned, but maybe.. just maybe.. all those technical improvements weren´t used in an aesthetically ¨coherent¨ or tasteful way. Now that´s completely subjective. It´s amazing how different brains interpret sensory input as something pleasant o not. This goes for music, colors, smells, pain/pleasure, etc.

I do think that KZ Shadowfall is overall a better looking game than KZ3/KZ2 , but few segments in KZ Shadowfall hold a candle in how ¨pleasing¨ Corinth River looks in KZ2.... in my opinion.

If we divert the discussion towards games achieving Photorealism.. then it could be easier to reach a concensus. AHEM.. uncharted 4 ... AHEM.

Are the multiplayer maps symmetric?
I don't think I remember any exact 1 to 1 maps. There was always some slight variation in each spawn. They all had unique buildings & sometimes the spawns were uphill vs downhill. If a building had a second floor though then the other side would usually also have a rooftop or a second floor. The distance to the closest lootbox from the spawn was usually the same on both sides and the lootboxes in the middle always had the best gear so that was the most important one.

Can't say I remember feeling at a disadvantage for starting in one spawn vs another in any map and the spawns would switch after a round so it wasn't a big deal.

They really need to release this soon. My ps4 is collecting so much dusts.

lol

X1 is only releasing in 1/3 of the countries that the PS4 is currently in.
Just wait for the next month, a few more months, and end of the year when X1 is everywhere before we can judge who will win in sales.
It isn't fair that PS4 has a head start with Nov and in 32+ countries ahead of X1.
Next month NPD should be interesting with the new SKU Kinect-less X1 sales.

It's not fair that you don't dust your PS4.

Yes...compared to the PS3/360 versions.

TLOU doesn't have a PC version to "help". TR did.

Help with what? Graphics? Most of the visual changes in TR:DE aren't even in the PC version. Also are the graphical changes in TLoU even that great? I thought it was just resolution and better character models.

There are elements in Perfect Dark that still haven't been bettered so your points about last gen shooters are fairly meaningless. AI especially hasn't been improved in years.

Hey, no problem man. It's just nice to see people joking around and discussing the merits of the game again after several episodes of rampant shit posting. I agree on both points you made. Some of the more horrific moments I've seen in film weren't actually all that graphic. They simply put the seed in your head and let you make it as awful as you wanted. That, and certain sounds and lighting conditions can elicit strong emotions from viewers. However, ND chose to show the horror in explicit detail and as a player and observer, I trusted their vision for what the game should be. Maybe they could have chosen to go another route, but then that would limit the gameplay mechanics. After all, how do you imply violence when you're dealing with an interactive medium? In cutscenes it's every bit as easy as a movie, but that can't be said when the player is in control. Maybe someone will solve that problem one day; and if they do, I will be very interested in playing it, if only to experience something new in my chosen form of entertainment.

I don't really have much to say about Uncharted. I mean, the source material is well known so I didn't understand the outrage when Nate acted exactly like the person he borrowed large parts of his persona from.

Resolution, frame rate, lighting, textures and modeling. There were some improvements to environment geometry seen in the first trailer, but I don't think much is known about the extent to which that will be taken. The same can be said of all upgrades, save resolution (1080p) and frame rate (60).

I always hate the "collecting dust" remarks. I forgot my system has a built in duster that only works when the system is being played. I've played my PS4 all the time since launch and theres still dust on it.

Yeah, it's dumb.

It's purely there to incite people, because the implication is that there aren't any worthwhile games to play.
Even though there could be hundreds of different reasons why you don't play a specific platform any given moment.

Until Divinity my PC was "collecting dust" and it has seen the most releases of any platform and obviously not all of it was bad.

It's not meant to be a deep or even accurate comment -- the purpose is to rile up people, unfortunately.

Everything other than Lara's model and some foliage is in the PC version. In fact, some of it is still below the PC version's highest quality assets. I have both the PC and PS4 versions. I do prefer the latter but most of the work was already cut out for them, really, thanks to the former.

Are the multiplayer maps symmetric?

My experience of the multiplayer is limited to the vanilla maps prior to the map pack releases, but I feel the base maps follow a general symmetry. Typically the layouts are, spawn base, left pathway, central area, right pathway, spawn base. In Supply Raid (TDM-style respawn, 20 team lives pool), four item boxes spawn total, near the team base spawns and in the left and right respectively. In round based Survivor, several more item boxes spawn, with one in the middle I know for sure. I'm not sure of the specifics as I spent most of my time in Supply Raid, even though I love no respawn gametypes.lol

While areas are distinctly different, they all have the same general symmetrical styling, so you know where to expect players due to the item boxes.
