The Last Tinker: City of Colors PS4 Release Date and Trailer

I played through it for review on Steam. It's a solid little platformer, although its obviously designed for kids. The character deigns and the art in general is great to look at though.

The art style is, sadly, the game's only real strength. It's really not the return to form 3d platformer it sold itself as. But it's not terrible or anything. Just kinda bland and a lot more limited than I expected (like the automated jumping). Felt like maybe they designed it with mobile in mind almost.

2.20 mins of video with about 15 secs of gameplay, for a game that's out in 2 weeks. I'm supremely confident of its quality.

This looks interesting. I love 3D platform games in colorful worlds. I've been looking at some walkthroughs and reviews and i have the impression that the game is somewhat average: not bad but not really excellent either. I might still give this a go though. I'm craving for a fun, cheerful and colorful platform game and it seems i might get some enjoyment out of it.

I think the game looks really good and I've been waiting for another 3D platformer for quite some time.

Also, I really respect Jason Sorenson for his reply to this comment:

Good to see the awesome processing power of the PS4 being pushed to the limit. O_o

This touches on a really important point: somewhere along the line, we started to go mentally associate gritty realism = expensive, and stylish/colorful = low-tech.

In reality, there’s a lot going on under the hood with this game — without getting too technical, the number of draw calls alone in a few places climbs to a staggering level — and it really does require the horsepower of the PS4 to pull off .

.....

Edit: Also, this same mentality seems to be used to fault Sunset Overdrive too, Cel Shading/Colourful = lower "horsepower" requirements...maybe they just wanted a different art style.

Yeah I checked it out when it was on steam because it looked visually fantastic, but it felt like a bunch of AAA tropes with a colorful coat of paint.
Linear pathways! Automated platforming! 2-3 optional collectibles in a short side path in each chapter! Follow the waypoint! Arkham style "flow to the enemy" combat with 3 hit combos!
Left a bad taste in my mouth for a game that deliberately points to Banjo and Jak in its product description (at least at the time, dont know if they changed it)

The puzzle sections where you lead a mushroom guy around are really cool but the game never builds on those. IMO it should have been the central hook to the game. It looks the part, and it sounds the part (love the soundtrack!), but the gameplay just doesnt hold up.

The Sony Pictures publishing arm is growing bigger it seems

Wrong thread?

Maybe I'm missing some joke here, but Sony doesn't have anything to do with this game. It is from MiMiMi Productions and LOOT Entertainment.

Edit: Apparently LOOT is a Sony company.

It seems strange that people think Sony is creating every one of these indie games. Valve/Steam isn't making every game that launches on that platform.

Sony isn't making it they're publishing it for their console

LOOT Entertainment. = Sony Pictures

Edit: After dropping PS Home, LOOT Entertainment has a lot of extra time available

Building off my last post, the biggest disappointment with this game is some of the levels have elaborate layouts that look like fun platforming courses or playgrounds, but your only interaction with them is to hold down the shoulder button and press forward

I was so disappointed when I found out that this isn't a platformer (all the "platforming" is automated). They really nailed the look of the 3D platform games of the past, but the bland beat em up gameplay holds little appeal for me.

Damn, that's a bummer about the automated platforming and average gameplay. The setting, world and visuals looks fantastic. Apperantly, the music is nice too and it has a proper story. From what i've read, gameplay is a mix of platform, puzzle and combat. The ps blog article actually describes this as a 3D platform too. Shame it's automated platforming.

I'd love to play a proper 3d platform game with these visuals and setting. Might still get for a good price.

Yeah, I think I'm still going to play it for all the other stuff that it looks like they did quite well but it's a bit of a shame in that case, was looking forward to the combination including the platforming. I remember this game from the previous thread, didn't know the console version was coming so soon.

I think my Daughter will enjoy this quite a bit. Lots of games coming soon that I can play with her so I can't really complain.

My feelings exactly. I've been reading some more reviews and they basically all say the same thing: it seems to be a game that has excellent presentation (visuals, music, characters) but the gameplay is not strong enough, mainly due to the automated platforming (i read somewhere that there isn't actually a jump button?), the simple puzzles and the basic and somewhat boring combat.

In a case like this, i'd really like to understand why a developer puts so much love and work into the presentation, calls it a 3d platforming and then decides to make the platforming automated. It's one of those mysteries of game development, it seems.

So anyone buying this? I still haven't made up my mind. I was reading the psnstores review and the platforming is similar to Assassin's Creed and fully automated (basically just press R2 and the game will do the rest) to make it more "accessible"...

Unless the price is low, i think i'll skip or wait for a sale. Normally, i would never hesitate on buying a colorful fun platform game but this is not a platform game imo.

Sorry for the bump. Has anyone that has bought this noticed the horrible framerate? It's almost unplayable. Really disappointed :/

how does it compare to something like ratchet? that's pretty kid centric but still one of my favorite franchises.

Its a fun game, but compared to the ratchet and clank series its no where near as good. The automated platforming and really bland combat dampens it a bit.

I would advise though to wait for a patch before playing it. the frame rate truly is horrendous, all you have to do is pan the camera and it grinds to 20fps and lower

Been playing a few hours and I think it's decent. A fun, colorful game aimed at kids but I'm enjoying it for what it is. Framerate does dip pretty low but I don't think it's unplayable.

I have, so I haven't really even played much. I got to the gate for the race at the very beginning, saw it was still stuttering and went back to Diablo 3. I'll play it when my PS4 tells me its been patched.
