You gain hypers by chaining enemies and collecting bees (there are other factors as well, it's not exactly clear how it works), when the pink bar in the upper left corner is full an hyper item will appear. If it happens while you are fighting a boss, the hyper will be automatically added to your stock and all the bullets will be cancelled into stars.

As for the ships, it depends on your play style: A-Type is fast and precise (good for long chains), B-Type is slower and has a large shot that covers almost the entire screen. In DOJ I used laser all the time, so I always chose Leinyan or Exy with A-Type. But I never really got into the game, it's really hard (with a PS2 joypad it's even worse) and I hate the scoring system.

Thanks for the info! That clears things.

Yeah the game is tough, but it hasn't been too frustrating yet. I can see the chaining getting frustrating, but I don't stress it much yet. If my chain breaks, I just try to get as far as I can with 1 credit. So far I've gotten to the stage 3 boss. :lol

It is probably my second favorite Cave game after Futari at the moment. I need further playing to fully judge it though.

I think use of the laser is a big factor in getting hyper. I'm the same with all donpachis: ship A, laser type. I always use Leinyan for the larger bomb stock over Exy because bombs are more useful than shot for me. ;)

That's pretty impressive if you just started playing. I can get to stage 4 on 1C but I've been playing for months. :lol

Original dodonpachi I can make it to the stage 5 boss. I need more practice.

Ah well. I'm not even close to finishing DOJ anyway.

So what do you guys think, should I buy Espgaluda for the PS2 despite I already own the sequel for the 360? I really like the sequel, but are there reasons to play the first one over the sequel?

I don't feel like the CAVE STG sequels make playing the earlier games pointless in any way. Pretty much all of them are worth playing & the Espgaluda ps2 port isn't too expensive. The only thing that would make the Espgaluda ps2 pointless is if a better port of the game came out for XBLA (hey, which may happen if Guwange does okay, who knows?) or PC or whatever.

Definitely. Personally I loved ESP II but prefer the original. Give it a go, it's a great game :)

It's easier and the scoring system makes more sense.
Am I missing something? I never found the score system nonsensical in EspII. Tough to perform, yes. But not tough to understand. It's much more intuitive to me than Mushi's.

This is pretty much impossible, though. You can't improve much on the Espgaluda port in terms of accuracy, and any release on 360 will unquestionably not look as good.

Okay thanks for the replies! Got a pretty good deal on Esp, so I decided to buy it. Can't wait to try it!

It was pretty damn confusing in the beginning, but once you got the hang of it, it became pretty intuitive. I think it's a nice mechanic, every time you play it the bullets will be different. And it is pretty satisfying canceling those bullets again and again. And fly through them while they are spawning. :D

I'm back at Donpachi in my Arcade Cab. , it's been some time but the game is still incredible !

I'll probably announce it in a Cave thread instead of the Free to a Good Home thread when I do. Just be sure to watch since I might do it before the end of this year. I wish I could use my Espgaluda II faceplate on the S. /:

Late November at the earliest.

I also bit the bullet har har. My J360 should be here in a week or two.

By the time it arrives, I will have the following:

DeathSmiles (J)
Ketsui
Espgaluda 2
Mushihime Futari
Raiden Fighters Collection (US, I think I want a Japanese version so it'll run on the new console)
Raiden 4 (US. I'm not sure if it's region free but I'm not a huge fan of it so I don't mind either way)
Various XBLA games (no worries about region restrictions here)

Am I missing anything important? Any Japanese-only XBLA games?

So where are you guys importing your consoles? Been lookin for a j-box for a long time, but the prices seem to be very high. Can't find used machines on ebay either.

I have Ketsui Limited Edition waiting in the shelf, but can't play it at the moment :(

Great pickup. I'd say you've got all the good ones. Raiden 4 is not region free unfortunatly.

As far as I'm concerned it goes 'Arcade Stick > Finger > D-Pad > Analogue Stick'

It's extremely precise. You need to try it to see how precise really.

Agreed. It especially works well on the iPad with the larger screen.

Does anyone have a good explanation / tutorial on how Espgaluda 2 is supposed to be played? I picked it up about a month ago for Xbox 360 and it's the only shooter that's genuinely confused me. I totally feel like I'm playing it completely wrong.

Here is a pretty good guide for the basics of playing: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6281
Once you got the basics, check out some videos of top scorers for ideas how to get a good run.

Anyone here have to send their J360 in for repair? My 360 has been dead for a while, but I still haven't sent it in. Kinda worried I'll pay for the repair and then get an American unit in return, which would be 100% worthless to me.

Dodonpachi Dai Ou Jou Black Label Extra, especially since the patch that fixes all of its problems should be out relatively soon.

This is why I went with a slim. Costs a bunch more but I feel a lot better about its chances.

edit: I reread this and it sounds like I'm gloating or something. I didn't mean it that way :(

OH RIGHT. That patch seems like it's in perpetual development though. I guess I'll order it if it's sure to be released.

Might be better to find a local place to repair it because if MS screws you, there's not much you can do about it. Make sure to photograph the serial numbers and such just in case.

The DoJ BL patch should be coming by the end of this year. There's also the PS2 version of original DoJ.

If you want to play Deathsmiles MBL Japanese version you have to spend 1200 MS points for it. Not sure if they are still blocking US credit cards on Japanese xbox live. If so you have to buy a points card off ebay or an import store.

A guide has already been mentioned but really this is the kind of game where your best bet is to play it over and over again until you get your own groove. If you try to mimic what goes on in the average video you'll eat bullets like candy.

I have the same problem,ESPGaluda is the only Cave shooter I cannot get into. The whole shieldbomb confuses me.

Oh yeah, that's a good point. Can anyone confirm that we can't use American credit cards with a Japanese Live account?
