The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

They removed some of the slowdown.

Yep. In some modes it's so bad the whole game runs 2x the speed of the JP version, making score comparisons between the versions not possible. And frankly, the US version just isn't as fun due to this. Personally, having played the JP version so long (which is arcade accurate), I cannot bring myself to play the US version ever again. It's that bad.

Wow, looking really, really slick. I think I might retire the iPhone game to make the 360 release nice and fresh in two months.

I started Mushi Futari again this morning after an eight month absence. Game is so perfect...still tops them all, in my opinion.

Last Saturday I 1000/1000'ed DeathSmiles IIX.

I got the game when it was released, played through arcade mode once and decided that I hated it.

I decided to give it one more chance last week and after a few runs of IIX mode, I fell in love with it. The scoring is nearly the same as in DS1, but for some reason I found the scoring system a lot easier.

Speaking of something being easier, this has to be the easiest, most accessible Cave shooter I've ever played. I 1cc'd the game via the "all levels on level3 route + ex level" route after 2 tries with Follet. Level 3 is pretty much the only level that gives any kind of challenge in IIX mode.

For some reason, I actually enjoyed IIX more than DS1...

Definetly my favorite Cave game. I need to get back into it, or man up and get better at Ketsui.

manzo,

Thanks for the head-up on Follett! She rocks with her little dragon that can wipe away all the white bullets with great positional accuracy. I never played her till today, she being the bit of the ugly one. Nice and powerful though!

Perhaps you don't really understand DS or DSIIX scoring. There are similarities, but I would never say the two are "nearly the same".

Follett is far stronger than any other character. The game is easy with her, true (she can also score higher than any other character). But if you play all rank 3 with anyone else, it's no walk in the park. Try to 1CC it that way with Windia or Supe, for example.

Is it me, am I getting to be an old fuddy duddy, but does anyone else just flat not get on with the different modes that started from Esp Galuda?

For some reason I just never seem to understand them properly.

I prefer to just dodge bullets without turning on a clock which seems to make my craft invincible for a period of time till the clock disappears and then the bullets speed up.

I know that they tweaked and added to this in ESP 2 and DDP R* and there is a lot more to it tactically, but every time I try to sit down and work out when it's best to enable the different modes it makes me not want to play any more.

I must be in the minority, because I imagine that if I played my shooters more and more seriously, I would probably get bored with the same old shoot mechanics and would love the new modes etc.

I still buy these games though, I got the ESP2 360 port, and the iPhone ports and probably will get the DDP R* 360 port, but I really don't get the maximum enjoyment out of them, than Mushi Futari for example.

On the Ketsui port, I powered up the 360, took a lot and went back to my pcb, if only they could have jazzed up the graphics like they did with Futari. Although I do like the other play option, where you can bullet cancel, Ketsui Lite or whatever it is.

As for Deathsmiles, I love the concept, but felt that the graphical quality fell short of what I expected from Cave (as they are usually superb). In fact I actually didn't buy DS2 because it just looked awful. The new side(ish) scrolling game looks awesome however.

With all the comments about the lack of slowdown for the US game, surely having a harder version is better? Like you would expect the western version to be baby-easy, so why is it so bad to have a much harder US version - It doesn't matter for high scorers, as they can split up the JPN and US version scores right?

Yeah, I noticed you playing DSIIX yesterday evening, I kinda hoped that my post made people at least give it a shot! :lol

But yeah, Follet and Rosa are overpowered in IIX mode, but at the same time they actually made the game fun. Scoring with Follet is so damn fun!

Well, I played DS1 the last time when it launched, so my memory could've played me a bit there, I have to admit.

Like I said, Follet and Rosa are WAY overpowered. I nearly managed to 1cc the game on Level 3 with Windia, but died a few useless deaths at the first form of Satan Claws.

manzo needs to snail mail his deathsmiles iix to me so I can uh.. inspect and make sure it's really a good shoot em up:D

Buy your own copy you cheapskate. :) You know you want to give your well-earned money to Cave! :p

Rosa's not as bad as Follett in DSIIX, in terms of being overpowered. She's strong, but not crazy strong. In addition, on the xbox live rankings, the top score for every other character is higher than the top score with Rosa (except Windia, whose top score is about the same).

Harder version isn't better for many reasons. First of all, it's just not as fun when playing for score, as you can't score as high. The JP release had a harder version, it's called play MBL at rank 999 (even the original JP version X360 mode Deathsmiles was harder, as they removed lots of slowdown in it). People who want a tough challenge on the JP version will play that.

You can split up JPN and US scores, but where's the fun in that? Who wants to compete on US scores when the original arcade and JP X360 release are on the same level, and practically no really good scorers will touch the US version? Cave messed up here by not including a mode in the US version with the original arcade version intact. They included 1000 other modes, after all. It's silly to exclude an accurate port. Should have at least included something in the options to switch between "original" and "updated" slowdown.

I'm really glad I have the JP version of Deathsmiles. After playing the US version, I'll never play it again. Completely worthless version, IMO.

This is so true. I just can't get enough of that game. The game is just pure fun. Definitely my favorite Cave game and my favorite shooter aswell.

Put about eight hours into Espgaluda II 360 over the weekend. Fast becoming one of my favorites. Everything moves so blazing fast! Kinda missed the launch earlier this year cause I was away and consequently played the iPhone version to death. I think this might be my Cave game to tackle till DoDonPachi R streets.

Still saddens me that no stick was released for this one ;-(

I played 4 runs of Espgaluda 2 last weekend (finally had the time to start it) but for some reason, it just doesn't click with me.

I understand the scoring system, but.... I just can't put it to words; I just don't like the game at all. I enjoyed Espgaluda 1 a lot, but for some reason Esp 2 doesn't give me the same feeling.

I've returned to Ketsui and god damn, it really is Cave's finest. Mushihime 1, Ketsui, Dodonpanchi Daioujou and Mushi 2. So good.

For me, I think I like the visual style and setting more than the scoring and mechanics. Love the mix of classical Western motifs and industrial technology ("Neoclassical Punk"?). The bullet patterns are a bit busy, but damn do they look pretty.

Otherwise, been hopping into EspRaDe and DDP lately. In terms of raw play mechanics, those two games are Cave in top form IMO.

I think one reason might be that I'm burning out from newer Cave games. Thus returning to the older classics (Ketsui, DDPDOJ) for a while.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I got Dodonpachi Daioujou for the 360 on Thursday and yeah... the game itself is great, but I really hope that the patch fixes things. The biggest issue for me by far is the shitty smoothing filter that you can't turn off. If the patch doesn't let you play the game in non-blurry mess mode, then to the 'bay it goes! And I'll rebuy the PS2 version. Le sigh.

Man, I adore the first one. Getting the PSN version has just solidified my love even further.

The music in the second one is just so dreadful, I always turn it off after a few tries because of that.

Nope, I'm doing the same over the holidays and I'll just use that system in my house as my dedicated Cave player. It will stay minty fresh for years like that...my iPhone is a little beat up. I need that new screen as well since I'm still rocking a 3GS.

Wow, you're definetly in the minority there.

Dodonpachi improved on the first in every way. Although I will agree the music isn't the greatest, and it also loops after the 4th stage.

My Cave rankings would be:
1. Mushi Futari 1.5
2. ESP Ra. De.
3. Dodonpachi
4. Espgaluda II
5. Guwange
6. Deathsmiles (even if the US version is messed up it's pretty fun on it's own. Will rebuy the Japanese version to get the superior version.)
7. Dangun Feveron
8. Donpachi

I didn't list Progear because I just don't like it at all. I like all the above games. I don't even like Progear enough to put it at the bottom. The rest: haven't played.
Yes I have a Ketsui avatar even though I haven't played it. I like the art! (and I have a copy I can't play right in front of me too!)

Isn't Pink Sweets like, extremely hard? I've seen experienced players complain about the difficulty in that game.

Of course it's going to in a bundle with MMP, but both of those seem pretty unmarketable in the US aside from being two games on one disc. Super hard game + weird game with fat pig girls on bikes... I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Super sad Pink Sweets has to share a disc with MMP. Wish they were split, even if they were full price each. But it is what it is. Can't wait for Pink Sweets! Doubt I'll get past level 3, though.

Having played Ketsui for a few hours now, going back to Mushihime Futari is easy mode. Am I crazy or it it a LOT harder?

Ketsui is AWESOME, BTW.

Unless you're playing Ultra or God mode on Futari, then yes, Ketsui is much harder. I always have so many stupid deaths in Ketsui trying to point blank enemies.

It's got unconventional rank and difficulty scaling. The rank goes up but doesn't go down (even if you die.. no suiciding for rank control), so if you try to play for a high score you'll be faced with 'you must die now' levels of bullets for the entirety of the game. If you play while trying to keep your score (and rank) low, it won't be as crazy. But the player does get a spammable bubble shield to hide in, negating most of the impossible bullet spews. See superplay here:

Well that doesn't look or sound fun at all. Rank that doesn't decrease? :( Graphically it's really... bright. I'm guessing the game has barely visible bullets that blend into the brightness too.

Just played some Mushi Futari 1.5 for the first time in a while. I forgot how hard stage 3 was. I was rocking too, no miss and no bombs through the first two stages, and then stage 3 claimed all my lives. >_>

Eh, it's the same cover. Would have been nice if they went the Death Smiles route and made a completely new one for the platinum hits version.

This bump also reminds me that I need to pre-order Daifukkatsu.

Way ahead of you on that pre-order, but this reminds me that I still need to grab Mushihimesama Futari. Too bad I don't like budget releases... *throws more money at it*

I've kinda overdosed on the iPhone version...probably logged forty hours on it.

Yeah, my J360 has been dead for a while, but the other day when I went to try it out it was working again. Been playing Ketsui over the last few days, but I figure by the time DFK is out it'll be broken again.

sigh, why was the 360 hardware designed by chimps...

Awesome news. I wouldn't mind giving DOJ black label a shot but my copies of DOJ and galuda play flawlessly on PCSX2 as it is.

I would love to see Mushi and Ibara emulated. They look like crap on PS2 and they run like crap on PCSX2.

One more week to go till the big XBLA Guwange release! This is my my most anticipated title for the fall...even eclipsing things like Kirby Epic Yarn and Cave's own DoDonPachi R. Lookin' forwards to the leaderboards! Hopefully Cave sees good worldwide download numbers similar to the iPhone games.
