Because if it doesn't sound low-fi it's not real blackmetal.

I'm not going to say "trve kvlt" cause that's douchy, but that is the reason for it sounding like that. Most of all of Varg's stuff was made in one pass.

Minimalistic production to match the minimalistic songwriting. This shit would be completely boring with clean production. The fuzz and feedback making it extra white noisy is part of the appeal. Hence why a lot of industrial acts kinda appreciate the aesthetic of black metal.

With the worst equipment available. Varg would purposely look for the broken, wrecked, or outdated equipment with which to record.

No one has the new Decibel yet?

Burzum - Dunkelheit

Filosofem will always remain the ultimate paradox for me...one one hand, "Jesus Dod" is one of my favorite black metal songs ever, then "Rundtgaing av den transcendentale egenbetens stotte" is one of the biggest wastes of time in musical history. I always get mad at the album and listen to Hvis Lysat Tar Oss instead.

And while the thread is in Burzum territory...did anybody give Fallen a listen? I don't remember it being mentioned at all in this thread...if you liked Belus, you'll like Fallen, they sound pretty darn similar to each other.

New Mastodon video/song on the street (full version of the trailer song Black Tongue that hit the net a few weeks ago).

There's a Spotify promo of some sort that features the song that started some time today in Norway/Sweden too.

New link to official video, featuring the making of the album artwork sculpture.

Came here to thank you all for recommending Battle Beast "Steel" best album I have heard all year. Her voice is out of control. Love it.

I know, I sat with a huge grin on my face during my first listen.

New World Shadows might actually be my second favorite Omnium Gatherum album and it has made me go back and listen to some of their older albums. I was reminded of how awesome Son's Thoughts is:

I disagree. I loved Belus but hated Fallen. They're very different albums. For reference I think Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is Burzum's best album, and don't care much for Filosofem.

I don't know if anyone is into All Shall Perish, but their new album, This is Where it Ends, came out today. It's pretty good, their new guitarist is a monster.

So I mostly make posts about my VG-themed music, however I've put some work into my original album recently after a hiatus. Not really sure how to label my genre of metal at this point. Would anyone take a crack at it? The only thing I can figure so far is melodic-death-prog-thrash, but that's not a genre...

Hey metal-gaf, I need your help!!

I need some awesome headphones that are killer for metal!! I list to some rap too, but my main music choice is metal. I have earbuds but I only want to use those for working out. I want some quality earpieces for when I'm just chilling or working.

Any recommendations?

I bought Grado SR80's based on recommendation, reviews, and auditions. Great for the mids and highs that most metal and rock in general have (very pingy and brash). Very detailed and more open soundstage. Great deal at $100. Not great for punch in the chest bass.

Be warned though that this is an open can design. Depending on how strict or easily bothered your co-workers are, people nearby can hear what you're listening to.

Headphone thread here as well:

Huh. I'm pretty impressed. I really didn't like the path they started taking after Deliverance. So I really can't say I had good expectations, but I can't say I had bad ones either, since I haven't heard their past several albums.

I like this and I'm looking forward to hearing more.

You missed out on Ghost Reveries??? Check it out.

Nah, I did. I think that's when I completely stopped listening to em. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

After a few listens I quite enjoy this new proggier direction they are taking. This shit is going to be polarizing, but I really think it's cool.

Also, Ghost Reveries was awesome, I thought.

Some good stuff on there; unless you are of the mind that they went to shit after Orchid, Morningrise, and MAYH...

New song is amazing. Took me a few listens for it to click though.

New Opeth song clicked with me first time. Love it.

It'll be interesting to see what they can do with prog and the heavy stuff with entirely clean vocals.

According to drummer Aesop Dekker on Facebook, Ludicra has disbanded.

Shame, they had a cool little niche in the world of black metal with the female vocals, I can't think of many other bands that do that. At least they ended on a high note, The Tenant was really good.

I love it, I always come back to Opeth because of how varied they are from album to album and this seems to be the biggest departure from their style thus far. It kinda reminds me Atheist with the prominent bass part/jazz fusion elements, yet it doesn't sound like them at all...just a really cool song, can't wait for the whole album!

For great headphones at a cheap price, I cannot recommend the Koss PortaPros enough. these are some of the best headphones I've had and the price cannot be beat!

Not liking the new Opeth at all. Such a shame after the increasing brilliance of the last few albums.

I'm the direct opposite; I really didn't care for their last two albums but I don't mind the new songs. It does give off a Symphony X vibe, but that's hardly a bad thing.

I'd call it progressive metal. There are obviously some melodic death influences (especially in Descent), but I certainly wouldn't call this melodeath. Some people might classify your music as progressive hard rock after hearing Funeral, but Overdose and Descent are undeniably metal songs.

Interesting concept for the album. This style of music isn't really my thing, but you're obviously a talented musician, and your compositions are tight and well-excecuted. Best of luck with the project!

I can't stop listening to Opeth's new song:

Shades of "Bitches Brew" and the Mahavishnu Orchestra; although, Axe is no Billy Cobham.

New Mastodon song is good, as well.

New Iced Earth album info: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=161207

I know Iced Earth can be a bit of a punching bag on most metal forums these days, but I still have a soft spot for them as they were probably the first underground metal band I ever really got into. I've always been an admirer of Stu Block even though I'm somewhat lukewarm on Into Eternity, so the addition of him adds a bit of excitement back into the band. I hope this new one is a similar forumula to something like Horror Show where it's just a riffapalooza as opposed to the never ending mid-paced tomfoolery of The Crucible of Man.

Thanks for the info. Yeah iced earth(along with in flames) was really the first underground band I got really into. Before then I had already given up on metal and moved on to other things like electronic music. They opened a new world for me where the best metal elements in metal (well at least my favorite) were carried further..

I hope this is the sci-fi\post apocalyptic version of horror show. Just give me some good songs!

I know Opeth has been introducing more and more of the prog sound with each album, but I have not listened to any Opeth since Blackwater Park (and that was a half assed listen on my end), skipped Still Life, but like their first 3 albums. Has their albums since then become more and more proggy? This new song is some serious nod to 70's prog here.

For the Prog Metal fans in here, Anubis Gate just put up their new album(due out September) for preorder and released a short clip of the first song. Sounds pretty good, been waiting for their new one since The Detached came out.

I've heard good things of Anubis Gate somewhat recently. I should definitely check them out.

On another note, I was reading some Angry Metal Guy today and I saw a post that caught my eye about being an "older" metal fan. http://www.angrymetalguy.com/steel-druhm-reflects-on-age-and-outgrowing-heavy-metal/

I see it more at shows for the more underground acts, (I'm certainly not one of "the old dudes" at a Maiden or Priest show) but I am beginning to be one of the older folks at a lot of the shows I go to. It's strange how this style of music still has this stigma that it's something that one grows out with age.
