The Metal Thread

I have been out of the metal circles for several years, back then I listened my way through pretty much every genre out there.

Are there any new releases out there guaranteed not to disappoint?

My preference is very old school and I find most contemporary black metal bands to bore me, so keep that in mind.

Hail of Bullets - General Winter (old school style death metal with Martin Van Drunen on vocals)
Hooded Menace - Never Cross The Dead (Awesome old school style doom/death metal)
Negative Plane - Lamentations and Ashes (old school sounding production black metal with some technical proficiency)

Carcass and Autopsy released new albums this year that was posted above.

Old school? How about the new Darkthrone album The Underground Resistance. It is heavily inspired by stuff like Walls of Jericho Helloween.

Anyone here listen to Sigh? I haven't heard anything from them for a while and I'm curious if anyone knows if they're working on some new stuff.

For any maudlin of the Well fans who stopped following them when they became Kayo Dot and largely became less and less of a metal band with each album, you should really check out their new one. It is very motW-esque at times, and is generally just a very good avant-garde metal record. Definitely the heaviest thing they've done in a long, long time.

You can stream some of it here:

http://kayodot.bandcamp.com/album/hubardo

Blue Lambency was a colossal let down for me, Coyote was an improvement.
Hubardo is fucking great though. So glad to hear the return of some heavier elements, though my favourite songs on it are not that heavy.
It has some awesome moments, but nothing will ever match Choirs. Which is one of the greatest albums of all time

I've always said the same thing about The Manifold Curiosity.
I'll likely never get to see them live.

Sigh is awesome. As another poster said they've got a new one coming out down the line called "Graveward."

I've got almost every album on CD, save for Infidel Art. Just waiting for a reasonably priced copy to pop up somewhere.

I'll be catching them on their last date of the tour in Orlando. Looking forward to a great show.

How was Eklipse? Listening to a couple songs on youtube didn't impress me too much.

Eklipse were as advertised. They are a 4 piece classical ensemble that play modern stuff and some original material. They certainly weren't bad, but the highlight of them being at the show was them coming onstage with Kamelot to play "My Confession" with them.

Any other DevilDriver fans here? Listened to their new album and liked it so picked up a bunch of their stuff:

New album Winter Kills:

Here, here, brother. I like this release a good bit, it's one of their stronger ones. Winter Kills is a pretty slick song, as is Oaths of the Abyss. I'm not sold on the Sail cover though. It could just be because I hate that song.

Alright Metal-GAF, post lyrics. Just post the ones you love. One of my favorites.

"Benighted darker and darker
as I walk through the woods,
into the silent shadows.

As the sky goes from dark to black, ice cold whispers burns my skin.
From nowhere to the deepest of my soul they speak unto me...
grievance of sadness, like the gift of sorrow.
A Moon, a bloodred full Moon lights my black hearts night.

Lightning cracks the sky and thunders roll,
through the night a chaos of storms arise.

Purgatory. Burning flames catch my eyes.
Into the shadows (so dark) I hear the choirs of evil,
a "joy" in blasphemy beyond my darkest fantasies.

The Gate is open...

Into the silent shadows I crawl,
upon the throne so cold,
atmosphere of melancholy.
I will forever burn...
Burn... Burn...

Into the silent shadows I crawl,
upon the throne so cold,
atmosphere of melancholy.
I will forever burn..."

Spring brought the two together
Married the wind with the fire
Under the secrecy of lush birch trees
Opposite hearts became one

One day followed another
Weeks passed, months lapsed
Until wind grew to a storm
And fire to a burning pile

Cold gust of whirlwind
Fiery flames, burning sharp
Adoration all too strong pushed the two apart

Different from the start
Fate that never was written in the stars
Led to a change of hearts

The fall split the one in two
Under the pouring rain
Dressed them both in loneliness
And led to their separate ways

The fire could not be tamed with the wind
Or the wind suppressed by the flames
As blending the light with the dark
Merely results in grey

Insomnium - Change of Heart

Hmmm I can't think of too many metal songs that I enjoy for the lyrics...but off the top of my head, this is one of my favorites:

Sonata Arctica - Wolf & Raven

Grant me a wish, my master
Take heed of me
I have been loyal servant
Heartfelt, humble

Gave up what belongs to me
Gave up my greed
My self-examination
Made me see, to be me

I am now like Judas, done
Ashamed of what I've become
Fear for life I wear as a ring
To bask in your favor, I will kill the king

You say, I am invincible
I cannot die
I know, but anyway
The words, they maim me

Grant me a wish, my master
Compassion, please
I'd like be a human
Maybe one day

I am now like Judas, done
Ashamed of what I've become
Fear of life I wear as a ring
To bask in your favor, I will kill the king

Let me go
Master, I hate you so
How can I sleep my nights
When my whole being cries

I tried to be like everyone
Open my soul
But what I had to give
Resulted loathing

Enchanted by the power
Licked by the grace
One beautiful black flower
The end of the human race

I will with pride now face my faith
King and Queen now lie in state
This fear of life I wear as a ring
I bask in your favor, I have killed the king

Let me go
Master, I hate you so
How can I sleep my nights
When my whole being cries

I had a nightmare
The wolf eating the raven
Entrails of life on my plate
And I ate 'em

Interested in what I see
Try that Rorcharch test on me
Have you seen the beauty of the
Enticing beast

Let me go
Master, I hate you so
I cannot sleep my nights
When my whole being cries

Let me go
Master, I hate you so
I cannot sleep my nights
When my whole being cries

Looking at the vinyls I haven't sold away makes me sometimes miss having a vinyl player. Especially when Reek of Putrefaction caughts my eye. Then again, I don't really want to buy a vinyl player, as I'd probably start to regret selling a big part of my collection.

GHOST
(or GHOST B.C.)
has a new documantary-series on the way directed by Greg Oliver ("Lemmy")

The Olde One - Papaganda Ep. 1:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woE4lBE615I

Much has been written about enigmatic Swedish theatrical metal band Ghost B.C.—"subversive," "refreshing," "blasphemous"—but even in all those countless reviews, interviews, and thinkpieces do we miss the words that properly incapsulate what it is about this clan of nameless ghouls that makes them so endlessly captivating, hooking listeners from the most disparate corners of music fandom.

With a live show that more closely resembles a pre-apocalyptic occult ceremony than anything you might refer to as a "concert," the collective, helmed by current harbinger Papa Emeritus II, delivers spiritual awakening and religious deviance to their devoted followers. In the first episode of Papaganda, our mini-series on the cult of Ghost B.C., we explore the papal lineage, the reign of Emeritus II, and the future of the Ghost dynasty.

Directed by Greg Olliver

Darkthrone - To Walk the Infernal Fields

From the abode of demons
A wing of the pentagram
Comes the juice that painted
My heart and my soul

Swept in black they are
Swept in black I am

From this soul come the eyes
that will look upon your ten
Beautiful heads with delight

My heart is the one
that will tend to your flames
and make them mine
We share this spirit
My heart is yours...

I am your disciple
and therefore my own
Your weapon I will be
with the demons that possess me
We'll ride the seven sins of death
that takes me to katharsis

The sign of your horns
is my dearest vision
They impale all holy and weak

You watch me face the mirror
and see desecration
With my art I am the fist
in the face of god

Looks like the vinyl insert sheet for Reek/Symphonies.

I've learned my lesson quite some time ago to NEVER sell any of my stuff regardless of how shitty the album was. A lot of the re-releases will have shitty mastering/brickwalling. Atheist - Piece of Time re-master was notorious for having loud popping and distortion...

People are wanting stupid money for the first 2 Malevolent Creation albums now :\
