Now I only collect two strips... Foxtrot and Dilbert... I love how Bill Amend stays really current with the trends, but does it in a way that doesn't get outdated (too much that is) when you read strips from 95 and what not...

I once wasted the better half of a day at work reading all of our Foxtrot collections. Amend does have an eye for the trends as noted, and he's pretty consistent with his humor

People should check out the Boondocks collections too, since it tries very hard to be a black Calvin and Hobbes and succeeds a considerable amount of the time (although McGruder dwells way too much on the "RARGHHH BUSH SUCKS" crap and characterization has suffered because of it)

Yeah it is pretty good... I like it, being black and all that.. but it tends to make race a little too much of a focus... I could see how someone who was not black could be turned off by it

I remember when people here were trying to get it cancelled because "it promoted violence towards women" (the story arc when Huey was hiding in trees and hitting two girls with "lightsabers") and was "anti-black" (negative black santa, the pimp reverend, and any time Riley does his thug routine, which are supposed to be ironic and social comments.) I never understood how people could miss the point of the characters, although I do agree that he lays the race and politics on a bit thick sometimes

it is funny because Jason Fox "promotes violence" in even harsher ways.. I love Fox trot and I am a fan of the Boondocks (I like Grandpa the best, reminds me of my father so much) and Aaron McGruder is very creative. I just wish he would layoff the race issues a bit at times.. But I guess that is kind of the charm of his strip..

I'll have to check this out, seeing how rare a good, consistent comic strip has become these days: Family Circus, Marmaduke, hell, even Garfield fucking sucks now. A recent Family Circus I had the displeasure of seeing:

The little girl is standing alone in the frame, her hand over her heart. She says,

"one nation, under God, invisible,"

:lol :lol :lol

COMIC GENIUS, I TELL YA!!!!

It's a good collection overall...but, to be honest (Owning like 10 of the things), he's really starting to repeat himself. I find that, while some of them can be REALLY funny, others are just rehashes of old strips and that's a definite problem.

Everyone should read Zits...it has the same basic problem but I can relate to it a bit more and is really fantastic. It's new collection, "Thrashed" is out now.

Well saying that, has there been any other artist/writer/creator besides Jim Davis to do another strip with a different cast? I would love to see some of these guys try it..

The guy who did Terry and the Pirates had a couple of series. Can't think of anyone from recent times, though

I'm pretty damn white and it's one of my favorite strips.

Best in the paper:
Doonesbury
Dilbert
Boondocks
Foxtrot

My guilty pleasures:
Jumpstart
Baby Blues
Luann
For Better or For Worse

Used to like but now suck:
Non Sequitur (that girl and her horse are irritating)
Garfield (hasn't been good in YEARS)

I really miss the days of the best comic strip of all time, Calvin and Hobbes. The Far Side was pretty sweet too.

Brother??? Minus For Better or for Worse... That is pretty much me.. Plus Robotma/Monty

Recently there was a Doonsburry that continued listing the names of dead soldiers, I turned to my girlfriend and said "its still funnier than the Family Circus and Ziggy"

For Better or For Worse is a guilty pleasure of mine as well...it's never really funny, but I'm a sucker for continuing storylines that actual characters. Day-to-day it's really not that good, but the Collections come together as real stories and make for good reading.

On the subject of people having more than one strip, Jerry Scott writes both Baby Blues and Zits, while they each have a different artist.

There needs to be more Zits love...some of them are absolutely fantastic. I don't have a copy of the strip, but the one with car washing and Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" is fantastic. And so, so true.

The only comics I read now are Dilbert and Foxtrot, with the occasional Baby Blues (being a parent makes them funnier).

Most of the comics, for a lack of better description, are not fun to look at. This was something that Bill Watterson really paid attention to. The panels were never overcrowded, but were stylish and fun. Both Dilbert and Foxtrot use pretty sparse lines, and the characters are very simple but distinctive. Most comics these days are so busy and crowded that they are nealy painful to read. Get Fuzzy is a great example of this - I don't think I've ever gotten through more than a few panels without wanting glasses.
