Yeah, I agree with your rundown of the scene. Like they painted themselves into a corner with the punchline, and then it became unfunny real fast. Man I was really into the Office, but it was never the same without Michael Scott.

Michael Scott is super cringy, but that's his character and you can love it or hate it. The rest of the office crew is diverse, I think everyone can find their favorite character. Also helps if you really worked in a small office in the early 2000s and can relate to many things from the show.
I have to say I'm very surprised about the popularity boom of The Office in the recent years, the show was among NBC's more popular comedies during its network run, but it wasn't bringing insane numbers.

What's worse is that apparently NBC wasn't interested in renewing the contract with him, it's not him who decided to leave. Anyway it's still better than what ABC has done to Scrubs after the main cast left.
