The "Official" Japanese PSP Launch Thread (NSF56k)

Keep in mind that on the middle brightness setting (where that 4-6h quote is measured from) the screen should still look about as bright as most screens on PDAs (and probably DS as well). PSP's max bright setting is insane for handheld specs...

There's a off brightness setting, which makes it impossible to see the PSP screen. There's a low setting, a medium setting and a high setting. The medium setting supposedly still looks brighter than the DS screen. The high setting is one up from that. And then there's a super high brightness setting that can only be accessed when the PSP is plugged into the adapter or some such thing.

I hope I can get 5 hours on medium settings...

There will be a white GT4 edition PSP eventually, this pic is from way back (E3 2004)

Lik Sang's impressions and image gallery are quite nice.

Also, the quote that immediately precedes the quote about fingerprints posted above:
One thing is for sure, out of the box, the PSP looks very stylish and is a very well-designed concept. Put it next to the NDS and it feels like one of those visions when past meets future. Mostly made of a special plastic with glass effect (you see yourself inside), with great attention to detail and with this beautiful PSP logo surrounded by a metallic circle at the back, the PlayStation Portable is sexy, no arguing about that.
I couldn't agree more about the looks. PSP looks more stylish, expensive and overengineered, than any PDA I've ever had a chance to see - all the while those PDAs being multiple times more expensive compared to it.

WOW the PSP is only a little bigger than the DS... I WANT!!!
PSP is actually smaller than DS. It's wider, but all other measurements are smaller, (especially when you compare it to opened DS where the difference becomes significant)

It's funny because no matter what shade you make this design it still looks like Gods own angels created it.

my contribution from the doomed thread, the hawt white psp:

I hope we get something like that for the US release next year.

2.) How much and where?

1.) The XMB (Cross Media Bar) PSP Interface has an option to be used in Japanese or English. As always, the ability to play ~games~ in other languages is entirely up to developers, so you might want to choose games which don't require large amounts of knowledge on a foreign language. Games like Lumines and Ridge Racers should be pretty functional without knowledge of Japanese.

2.) How much and where? You mean, how much will PSP cost and where can you get it? Well, the PSP costs 19800 yen...or about 205USD after taxes. As for where...well...no where. Except eBay. Nobody who orders a PSP now from Japan will get their PSP until at least Feb-March. And in that case, it's probably better off waiting for the US launch anyway :P

If you were referring to something else with these questions... then *shrug* :P

I would like to know what Talkman is?

Thanks for the answers

I think something like an interactive international dictionary.
Enter a word in one language, and that bird will regurgitate it back in another selected language.

I refuse to believe that Play-Asia, Lik-Sang and IGN have had the device on their hands for over a day now, and they all haven't bothered to find the truth about the battery life - even with movies only.

I believe is more like a real time translator with voice recognition funtionalities. You talk into the yet to be released PSP microphone and Talkman should attempt to understand what you just said and translate that.

Chittagong, i second your sentiments. But for IGN is not their fault 'cos AFAIK they don't have the system with them. There are some kiosks demoing the PSP in Japan where they come and go to test the thing.

That's what I thought it was.

If it is, i hope there's at least the option of entering the words manually. Sure as hell don't want to go thru the Lifeline torture all over again.

It would make sense to have a standard dictionary in that software, yes.

OH HELL YEAH!! I LOVE LANGUAGES best thing EVaR!! :D

I SO WANT THIS...

I speak a few languages and love learning them so this will be so HOT

I'd get one that translates Spanish and one that translates Japanese.

Those are the ones I'd get the most use out of.

So you have to get different UMDs for every two languages?

not too bad I guess

I'm not sure, that's just an assumption on my part. But I did read early when PSP was just revealed that there would be a language translation program (which I assume has turned into Talkman), and back then they said there would be a seperate one for each language.

So I don't know if that's still true... but, hey, it'd be awesome if there were like four languages per UMD.

I believe it's a universal translator

During the conference, SCE presented an innovative translation program for the PSP called Talkman. Currently in development, Talkman will be able to interpret nine different languages with voice output.

Wha?

Is that Talk Man thing for real?

That's really, really awesome.

Theoretically couldn't you also use that to learn other languages as well?

Talkman = Killer App for me.

Hot damn that would be useful. I'm fairly well travelled but OMG that would make it so much easier.

There are some comments in the Play-Asia forum. Nothing scientific yet, though -- turn on a stopwatch and give it a go, please...

July 12, 2004 - Sony Computer Entertainment intends to turn the PSP into more than just a game machine, as revealed at a press conference held today in Tokyo. At the conference, the company announced Talkman, a translation program.

Talkman accepts verbal input via a headset microphone. Speak some words in one language and the software instantly translates them into the specified language of your choosing. The game lets you select from different situations and nine languages. A bird character called Max interacts with you as you play.

SCE refers to Talkman not as productivity software, but as an application that's filled with entertainment value. The game's producer at Sony Computer Entertainment R&D 2 commented, "This is software that makes conversing with people throughout the world possible. However, the PSP is a game machine, so making a plain translation program wouldn't be interesting. So, we decided to make a translation program that's filled with entertainment value."

At the conference, SCE demonstrated Talkman's "Hotel" situation with translation to English. When Japanese words were spoken into the microphone, Max held up a Japanese flag. Once the phrase was finished, the game managed to display a textual version of what had been said. Following this, Max displayed an American flag as he spoke the equivalent English phrase.

Outside of pure translations, Talkman lets players play games to test their fluency of a language. One game asks players to read text and gives them a rating based off their pronunciation.

It remains to be seen just how robust the translation and voice recognition aspects of Talkman are. We'll have to actually get our hands on the title before we can determine that.

As with all other PSP software, a release date has yet to be set for Talkman.

Daaaamn.

Sony is getting a bit "Nintendo-ey" on us with the Eye Toy and now this.

This is really cool.

Anyways, I'm more sold on PSP than ever now. I have a lot of friends from Japan, Portugal, Germany, etc. it would really be great to have this.

bump ...

Anyways any solid news on the battery life?

Gamespot said they would post information soon about battery life... but it hasn't happened yet. I hope it's comprehensive (based on only UMD movies, obviously) because I'd really like some honest-to-God hands-on numbers that aren't from Sony.

sounds awesome :)

Didn't Sony say the battery life for UMD movies is like 5 hours? That seems odd since it's constantly accessing the drive. Maybe the worst battery drain doesn't come from UMD access.

I read 5-6 hours with UMD movies. Maybe that 2-3 hour estimate is under ideal conditions (eg. max brightness and higher volume).

Sold! And I'm a Ninfan.

Sorry, Nintendo. You should have been coming up with stuff like this at launch instead of rehashing or revamping old games. O' how thee great has fallen.

Now, I can understand what those Spanish-speaking people are saying when they stop talking in English when I come around. How rude!

Anyway, is this man's attempt to go against God for what happened at the Tower of Babel? Just curious?

:lol :lol

This would be hillarious if you were convinced that co-workers or fellow classmates were talking sh-t about you in another language and the PSP confirmed it for you.

Run this site through babelfish and let some computer voice (think stephen hawkings here) read it to find out how the experience is gonna be. It's a good step but i doubt we're gonna get Star Trek Universal Translator from that stuff. I'd be actually surprised if it works with any other voice than yours. If you ever got one of those Voice Recognition apps for the PC you know you have to train the suckers with lots of sentences until you get decent results.

Everything is possible though, so if they get it to work i pull my hat.

Oh man, that's a Three's Company episode just waiting to happen ...

"You mean Penelope didn't want to go down on me? But the PSP told me ..."

:lol :lol

so has there been any confirmation that the psp may be region free as far as games are concerned? i highly doubt it, but man would i love to import one from japan.
