The PlayStation 4 has been hacked to allow for homebrew apps

A newly-discovered hacking exploit has opened up the PlayStation 4 and Pro, and may work on a PS5 too.

A trio of console hackers have released the hack, which works on consoles with firmware update 9.00 and earlier, and allows for homebrew apps and unauthorised copies of games to be played.

Hacker SpecterDev shared a video on Twitter with custom firmware running on a PlayStation 4 console.

This exploit is particularly notable as previous attempts ran on much earlier firmware updates, meaning new games which require the latest firmware won't be playable.

However, Sony has only just released its latest update - 9.03 - meaning many more players yet to update can potentially access the hack.

Another hacker involved, Znullptr, tweeted that the PlayStation 5 could also potentially be hacked in the same way, but this is yet to be tested as the lead developer from the hacking team doesn't have a PS5 console.

That would be cool. I was under the impression PS4 was already cracked?

I have an extra PRO here so I could use that.

I believe that they are two steps of that. Run pirated copies and run completely unsigned code is two different things.

I would be more excited if my old PS4 didn’t sound like a squad of F14s taking off.

Oh, might be time to buy a PS4 Pro and play some older exclusives. Though the console sounding like a jet engine isn't very appealing.
Not the best time to buy it right now. In my country new ones aren't available since a year or more and used ones are very overpriced.

Homebrew... fuck off, aye the 10 people who wanna run mame or xbox media center sure will use it to run "homebrew" the other 50million will use to run pirate games, call it what it is

Yup, the disparity of people that say they just want homebrew is magnitudes greater to anyone that actually talks about homebrew outside of topics talking about a systems security being broken.

I can play my games from the hard drive but I can still sell my physical license in the future if I want too. Lovely stuff.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Tried this on my PS4 Pro that's been sitting unused since last year. Works pretty reliably!

I was able to gain FTP access which I used to grab my apps.db file and modify it to hide all the shitty built in icons I never use (playroom, capture gallery, media apps, etc.) Very cool. Installed some homebrew that lets you download specific game updates without PSN access. Which is great because I can pop a disk in my system now and still have it download the newest patches without having to sign in to PSN.

PS4/Pro has been cracked since forever ago. I was running unsigned code on 5.05FW...and I was LATE to the party.
This is only news to people that have been (somehow) perpetually above the minimum FW for the last several years.

This would only interest me if there will be some way to play PS2/PS3 games.

Right now, around 1000 PS2 games have been tested through a new emulator. PS Scene developer Roxanne made the announcement via the PS2 Emulation Wiki Page. In the announcement, she mentioned that of those 1000, only around 500 have worked with no real issues. The rest of the lot either have gnarly bugs, brutal crashes, or just flatout refuse to play. While, sure, only half of the tested games work, 500 PS2 games on the PS4 is nothing to scoff at.

I have a ps3 pretty much gathering dust with that exact description

There are countless people who hack and put a million games on their system... and never bother to play anything...

I have only hacked 3 systems which have been beneficial to me.

#1 PSP and #2 Switch... just to overclock them and get a little bit more performance out of them....

#3 is PS Vita, to overclock that baby

Merry Christmas all. I just discovered my ps4 is on 8.52 which means I’m eligible for the jailbreak. But unfortunately the system downloaded but not installed version 9.03. I already did the steps to prevent the system from updating while it was powered off.(I even unplugged it) how can I remove this update file when I turn this back on? I’ll even go as far formatting this thing in safe mode if that will work. Thanks!

You should be able to download the 9.00 "Recovery" firmware from the archive.org site. Then you can boot into recovery mode and install it from there. If you want to be super safe, you could format it from safe mode first.

Yeah, I decided to format the system and start fresh. making sure my PSN accounts are wiped away besides.
Best Christmas present ever. Today I discovered that this soon to be gifted PS4 was on FW 8.52, collecting dust because of my acquisition of the PS5. Needless to say I will no longer be gifting this PS4!
