In November, we asked the Steam Selection Committee to nominate games for the prestigious Steam Awards - and while we expected to receive a large response, even we couldn’t have anticipated the over 15 million nominations that came through.
But the time for tabulation is over. The Steam Selection Committee has spoken… here are your 2016 Nominees. Come back every day from December 22nd to December 30th to vote for each award, and find out the winners on New Year’s Eve!

The “Villain Most In Need Of A Hug” Award - Some people just need a hug.
-Borderlands 2
-Dead by Daylight
-Far Cry 3
-Far Cry 4
-Portal 2

December 23rd 10 AM PST
The “I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award” Award – This title didn’t have a huge marketing machine behind it, but you found it and loved it. Then you told your friends about it. And they loved it. And now that little game that could is about to win an award… but always remember: you totally found it first.
-Euro Truck Simulator 2
-Paladins
-Starbound
-Stardew Valley
-Unturned

December 24th 10 AM PST
The “Test of Time" Award – This award is for the game that is just as good today as the day you first played it. Newer games may come out, but it doesn’t matter… you’ll always come back to play this one.
-Age of Empires II HD
-The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
-Sid Meier’s Civilization V
-Team Fortress 2
-Terraria

December 25th 10 AM PST
The “Just 5 More Minutes” Award – You have an early day tomorrow. You need to get some sleep, so you’re just going finish one more thing before you decide to tuck in for the night. Just one more. Wait, one more. What’s that you say? It’s 2:30 AM? This award is for the game that keeps you playing late.
-Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
-Rocket League
-Sid Meier’s Civilization VI
-Fallout 4
-Terraria

December 26th 10 AM PST
The “Whoooaaaaaaa, dude!” Award – Some games melt your face. Maybe it was a crazy plot twist. Maybe you just got your wisdom teeth removed. Either way, this game BLOWS YOUR MIND.
-Bioshock Infinite
-DOOM
-Grand Theft Auto V
-Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
-The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

December 27th 10 AM PST
The “Game Within A Game Award” Award - Kinder Eggs. Peanut Butter Cups. Jelly Donuts. All great things stuffed with other great things. Like a mighty turducken, this award celebrates the best mini game hidden within another game.
-Garry’s Mod
-Grand Theft Auto V
-The Stanley Parable
-Tabletop Simulator
-The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

December 28th 10 AM PST
The “I’m Not Crying, There’s Something In My Eye” Award - Games are fun. But sometimes games become more than that, and touch you in a way you weren’t expecting. This award celebrates the game that blindsided you emotionally. You weren’t expecting to cry. It wasn’t in the plan. But it happened nonetheless.
-Life Is Strange
-To the Moon
-This War of Mine
-Undertale
-The Walking Dead

December 29th 10 AM PST
The “Best Use Of A Farm Animal” Award – Animals are rad and almost any game is better for including them. This game used a farm animal in the best way possible.
-ARK: Survival Evolved
-Blood and Bacon
-Farming Simulator 17
-Goat Simulator
-Stardew Valley

Of course, we intended to have a final 9th award, a write-in category where Committee members could suggest a new and exciting award. But the response was so overwhelming that one category didn’t seem enough… and so we decided to add not one, but four new awards!

December 30th 10 AM PST
The “Boom Boom” Award - Let’s face it: explosions are pretty great. In a blockbuster movie they’re thrilling. In a celebration with fireworks they’re beautiful. And when they’re behind a cop putting on sunglasses they’re nothing short of glorious. These games understand the fine art of detonation.
-BroForce
-DOOM
-Just Cause 3
-Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
-Kerbal Space Program

The “Love/Hate Relationship” Award - “Games are just supposed to be fun!”… oh sweet summer child, your naivety is adorable. Games can be more than fun. They can be challenges that demand perfection. These games are punishing gauntlets that make you question your very skill… a crucible that will push you either to greatness or a breaking point. You will wake up family members as you scream. Words will come out of your mouth that would make your mom blush. Your chill friends will ask you, “Why do you play something that stresses you out?”… and you will stare at them with steely eyes and reply, “Because I love it.”
-Dark Souls III
-Darkest Dungeon
-Dota 2
-Geometry Dash
-Super Meat Boy

The “Sit Back and Relax” Award - Did you read the description for the “Love/Hate Relationship” Award? This is the opposite.
-ABZU
-Cities Skylines
-Euro Truck Simulator 2
-Mini Metro
-Viridi

The “Better With Friends” Award – There are some games out there that just aren’t the same when you play by yourself. Maybe you need to have a friend to watch your back. Maybe you need to have a friend that you can stab in the back. Either way, mirth is awaiting those that gather friends to play these games.
-Don’t Starve Together
-Gang Beasts
-Golf With Your Friends
-Left 4 Dead 2
-Magicka

Not a bad turn-out. Obviously most of the winners are the more popular games (since this was, well, a popularity contest), but certainly not a bad selection all around.

'Game That Deserves A Sequel' category is conveniently missing.

Half Life :(

I was actually just thinking that. I know a lot of people (myself included) wrote that in. Valve crafted that user vote category in a way that HL couldn't possibly be one of the nominees no matter what, lol.

I don't see RE4 or Dark Souls on here at all. I am disappointed by Steam community's taste.

Well, at least A Dark Souls is on here. Also Portal 2!

Test of Time? Only one of these games is old.

It doesn't really have to be about only old games. It could mean how long people continued to play them after release. How long they remained popular. How well they've aged etc.

Sure, but I would say a game that is 20 years old and is still fun to play is more qualified than a game that was released 5 years ago and is still fun to play. It would be nice to see more of the all time PC classics represented.

The “Love/Hate Relationship” Award is great haha.

Also, so glad Age of Empires II made it up there, it truly is quite the unending experience.

It won't win against games like Skyrim or Civ, but I'm glad it's there.

I guess Valve didn't like being called out with that 'Non-Award' award to put in the "Needs a Sequel" category

This is reminiscent of the days that Steam sales were structured around user voting. Seeing Far Cry 3 and Borderlands 2 come up for the eleventh time over more interesting, but niche, titles made you want to bang your head against a wall.

Disappointed to see that Hotline Miami is not in the running for "Best Use of a Farm Animal".
It seemed like that was a popular choice on GAF, but maybe that just says something about how relevant online forums are compared to the wider Steam audience or general game-buying public.

Free-to-play games I've never heard of in the "I Thought It Was Cool Before It Won an Award" category, two Far Cry games in the "Villain Most in Need of a Hug" category, and most of the "Test of Time" games being less than 10 years old also speaks to this.

I'm also surprised to see Viridi, a basic port (runs in a 9:16 window) of a mobile free-to-play game where you pay real money for virtual plants, on any of these lists.
I'm not against it being on the list, because there are some "non-games" that I like too, it just surprises me that it managed to get enough votes for that when looking at what games made it into the other categories.
Soundtrack seems nice though.

Thinking about FC4's villains just now, my brain completely blocked out pagan min and all I could think up was every other villain in the game. Talked a lot but dude not getting screen time really messed with my ability to recall him.

That flashback to the time of Far Cry 3's release, when gaming sites and forums all praised Vaas as a great character, but all you found was a psychopath murderer with no redeeming qualities, that wasn't even handled well in the games own storyline.

I have no doubt that "Games that deserve a sequel --> HL2:Ep2" got the most votes by at least an order of magnitude in the create your own poll. But I suppose asking Valve to acknowledge that in their poll is like asking Nintendo to acknowledge Goku for Smash.

A lot of pretty boring options.

Just 5 more minutes of Fallout 4 :lol

That's actually a pretty good choice for the category. I don't like it that much, think it's very flawed, but it's on my top 10 list of most played games on my Steam account, with 60h.

Not super sure what the point of the nomination phase was given how the nominees are about 95% what I would think would be nominated if Valve had just done it themselves, and the write-in categories are ultra-boring, but still happy to take part in this.

It helps valve make future sales more interesting. With a bit of luck both borderlands and skyrim will receive discounts!!!
