Bio-Hazard/Resident Evil - Deserves its respect for popuralizing the genre. Despite the backlash it gets for its control scheme, I personally have no problems with it and more or less find it "intuitive". I only played a little bit of the first, and played Code Veronica all the way through. Just your typical adventure game with some neat enemis to fight with. The story in CV was pretty cool too.
Project Zero/Fatal Frame - I love Japanese horror movies and this is the closest thing to being in one. The eerie atmospheres, the creepy audio, and the flashes of disturbing imagery all add up to one darn scary game. The scariest games I've ever played in fact. Add in a skill-based combat system that actually contributes to the unsettling atmosphere and you've got a winner that's not only fun because it is true horror, but has fun gameplay to match. I'd almost say that it's like a slower paced FPS that requires precision and timing.
Silent Hill - My experience with this series is pretty limited and as far as I can tell, it sits in between the above two.
Illbleed - Amusing for all the wrong reasons? The trailer is still the best though.
I know there are a bunch of others like Alone in the Dark, Clock Tower, Eternal Darkness etc, but I'm not too familiar with them. What are your thoughts on this genre?
I'll be the first to say that I don't quite understand why Resident Evil is as popular as it is. Frankly, after playing SH and the Fatal Frame series, I can't really go back to the cheap pop out at you type scares that RE provides. And the gameplay is really dull too. Is it just because people haven't ventured out and tried other survival horror games, or am I missing something?
