The turn based games I (or you) should have

Some of my best experiences with videogames has been with turn based games. Civilizations, Master of Magic, Lords of the Realms, Colonization, Alpha Centauri, Advance Wars 2, Fire Emblem, Disgaea, Super Robot Wars... so I would like to know from you what are the turn based games you would recomend for any system.

Actually I´m looking for a list of games I should purchase on this genre, hope to find some obscure or old great games. But as I doen´t want to be selfish, maybe this could a good appreciation thread about the genre and the games you love from it. Pictures and info would be great when you name a game but, as it´s logical, write whatever you want about it.

This is one of my favourites: Master of Magic

MoM.jpg

I spent weeks and week with this game, it has ton of units, cool battles (in Civilization I didn´t see my troops fighting, but in MoM I had full control of my units in turn based battles), lot of spells, heroes, summonings, lot of races, lot of options for your cities, and some really cool features like the possibility to create your own weapons and items to equip your heroes.

I loved this game, I have yet to play Age of Wonder II that I have, but I have heard that AoW: Shadow Magic rivalice with MoM, the problem it´s that is hard to get it in Spain, I´m not really sure if it was released here, it´s as good to import it?

well, Fallout and Fallout 2 for starters.

Also, you'd probably want to check out Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen, which is super rare in both its SNES and PS1 incarnations.

You love Master of Magic, yet you do not own Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. WHY IS THIS

the problem it´s that is hard to get it in Spain, I´m not really sure if it was released here, it´s as good to import it?

;) Now I remember you were the one saying that Shadow Magic was as good or better than Master of Magic, would be possible to tell me a little about it? I don´t find it in my country and import from EB Games or Gamestop it´s a pain because they have no cheap shipments out of U.S.A, so it´s pretty expensive.

Culdcept: a mixture of Magic: The Gathering, Monopoly, and Advance Wars - it's the reason I went out and bought a PS2. And it's only like $2 at your local EBGames!

Culdcept is great.

AoW: Shadow Magic is the only AoW game to get the MoM concept right. It has the alternate world and settling, two noticeable absences in AoW 1 and 2. It also has random maps and faster tactical combat, which are likewise requisites. It's not a perfect MoM clone; it does a few things worse and several things better. It's still less epic in that you'll only have maybe four or five settlements in an empire game, but the spells/summons are a lot better balanced and the item crafting, while a bit buried in the interface, is much better implemented and far less of a gamebreaker. It has far better unit variety, too.

MoM I had full control of my units in turn based battles, lot of spells, heroes, summonings, lot of races, lot of options for your cities, and some really cool features like the possibility to create your own weapons and items to equip your heroes.

Shadow Magic has all of this, and in much larger quantity. The race designs are way better, and the unit variety is almost geometrically greater. Again, Shadow Magic's only shortcoming compared to MoM ais the less global scope. Some MoM fans don't like SM's AI -- the game actually HAS an AI and a good one at that -- because they liked to run riot throughout the game and focus on civilization-building versus protracted battles with cunning AI foes. You can dumb it down pretty good though, apparently, if yer into empire-management versus warfare.

Skip on AoW 1 and 2 and go straight for Shadow Magic. Trust me, you'll adore it. I still it play it alot to this date, and while nothing can replace the nostalgia I have for MoM, it's still a wonderfullly-designed 4X fantasy game.

I know, that's kind of gross, isn't it? ;)

Yep. There was no way in hell I was ever going to buy a PS2, but then I played Culdcept at a friends' house and less than a week later, I bought a refurbished unit.

some nice simple turn based games can be found at these sites:

They are all Rogue-Likes though, naturally, more advanced than the game that started it all

That looks fantastic, thank you very much for the info :)

Thinking on Master of Magic, I did some research at google and I found it as abandonware. As I have the original, I have had no problem about dowloading. But my surprise has been finding a program called DOSBox that emulates nicely dos system in a windows, I didn´t expect it could work, but it does!

Wow, playing again MoM almost made me cry, so much memories... I´m very surprised it work so nicely.

But even being so happy to have found this, it´s a little depressing to see how great were turn based games some years ago and their actual state. PC turn based games some years ago had fantastic ideas, exciting scenarios and lot of interesting options to play with. I like RTSs, but I miss the complexity of having tons of options (Nippon Ichi is solving some of this nicely, but would like to see more PC turn based games with a more "serious" scenario). I think I will do a little of research among DOS strategy games.

Apart of this, do you know how is Culdcept II? it´s the only one I can find in japanese import shops right now.

Disciples 2! One of my favorite TBSs of all time. They just released a Disciples 2 Gold pack too, which includes the original version, Light and Dark expansions, and the Elves expansion too.

Heroes of Might and Magic II or III (I prefer III, but both have their adherents). Stay away from Heroes IV.

As far as turn-based RPGs, I can't say enough good things about Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. If it keeps up its present quality of play (I'm a little over halfway through, I'm guessing), it's easily my favorite RPG this gen.

What was the name of that game??? Ascension?? Oh right, Ascendancy! Had a great time playing that for almost a year.... :D

XCom is STILL one of my favorite games of all time and no game has come along to top it in all their 3D clone glory.

eh? Am I thinking of another Black Isle game?

Edit: Damn, Helps to actually read the thread, and thread title. Play Torment anyway.

There isn't a game in this thread I would play before Front Mission 3, with the exception of NetHack (which is free, so if you haven't played it, get to it). Front Mission 4 also gets some praise in my book.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is very good, you could get the game “complete” with expansions for around $10 US.

It's also a great "hot seat" multiplayer game.

Fallout is turn-based, but I don't think that's the sort of turn-based he's interested in.

Another nod for Age of Wonder: Shadow Magic and Disciples II.

Turn based games everyone should play:

Real Oldies:
SSI Gold Box RPGs
X-COM I & II
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 1/2/3
Gengiz Khan
Panzer General
Civilization I&II
Worms

Dated:
Fallout I&II
Alpha Centauri
Jagged Alliance I&II
Europa Universalis 2
Heroes of Might & Magic II/III
Shadow Watch
Worms Armageddon

Shiny stuff:
Laser Squad Nemesis (Online, from creators of XCOM)
Civilization III
Hearts of Iron 2
Victoria
Heroes of Might & Magic IV
Worms World Party

The genre has been dying for a while :( I must get Gladius for XBOX..

Civilisation 3 currently owns me. It's that "one more turn" hook. Makes me wonder if I actually need any other games :lol Can't wait for Civ 4!

X-Com: UFO Defense (I've only played it on PSX, but I still have my copy and no system to play it on:))
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 1-9 (on NES to PS2, take your pick)
Civ 3 (play the world is pretty fun, if you have time....)
AeroBiz (sweet turn based plane sim)
Ghengis Khan II (SNES, similiar to RotTK)
Nobununga's Ambition (SNES, it's like RotTK 1.5...not quite as good as #2, but not as limited as #1)
There are loads of great Turn Based Strats on the SNES/Genesis

And make another Aerobiz title!!!
I honestly to this day don't understand how they made that game so fun. It was like crack to my freinds and I. I worry that should they ever make a sequel it'd fall hugely short.

I know of a game that is like Fire Emblem but it was for Saturn or PSone, I don´t remember and I don´t know the name... Do you know which one I say and if it´s good?

High fives DCharlie. Laser Squad was like THE tactical squad game. None of that wussy XCom nonsense... (don't take that too harsh, I loved XCom 1 and 2 too).

Thanks for the recomendation MoxManiac, I think I'll see if I can hunt down that Disciples II Gold pack. I'd prefer to buy it through Amazon/Borders online but they don't have it listed. Based on the reviews I saw it seems like a great game to check out, and there are a number of playable demos on Strategy First's website.

I'll also second Alpha Centurai and its expansion Alien Crossfire. While the game is defintiely showing its age now it was so well crafted that it still holds up. Basing each faction around a different ideology and social agenda allowed each faction to play very differently. I wish Sid Meier would make another Centurai game since I was disapointed by Civ 3 (though I wanted to love it).

Now if you guys are looking for an oldschool game I'd recomend GemFire by Koei for the NES, Genesis, and SNES. It's a fantasy startegy game about a civil war on the island kingdom of Ishmeria. You have to gain control of all 30 provinces to end the war. It's fairly easy by today's standards but it had a surprising amount of depth to it .

Laser Squad x infinity. How is Laser Squad nemesis in comparison? Amiga emu for PSP please so I can play laser squad

1914-18
Battle Isle
A 3D one the battle isle guys did that I can't remember the name of
Vandal Hearts
