Interesting on the physical copies, but I guess it is a result of the pandemic. Also - WTF cassettes? Vinyl gives you a nice artwork, cassette gives you what - a tape to hang yourself with?

I've still got most of my old cassettes. Sure, I haven't bought any since the 90s, but they are still important!

50k new cassettes sold in the UK in 2018.

omg is he the only celebrity who isn't afraid to look his age? (or is he age'ing himself for the cover)

either way if he sticks with synth pop i'm behind it, but i sincerely doubt i'll listen to it

edit: ah apparently he's 31 nvm

This entire album feels like filler to me. The album he put out during the lockdowns had a great coherent vibe and this just fees meh

I wonder how many of those 50K cassettes sold are actually being listened to. Most people I know that buy vinyl or cassettes are hipster collectors who buy them just to collect but don't actually use them for their intended purpose. The same with some people who buy limited edition physical games to keep sealed but then buy a digital copy to play...

I think they are just collectables.

I’ve never really listened to him before. I enjoyed a couple tracks on my first listen of this new album. I’ll give it a couple more plays before I have an opinion but so far so good.

Cassettes played thru a Nakamichi sound pretty nice (sometimes better than CD if we're talking old school stuff that was actually recorded in analog). Only problem is actually finding equipment to play them on AND can play back well. There's really no point to them in this current day and age as they were designed to be a portable medium and good luck getting an good old-school sturdy metal Walkman that still works for less than $300, and even then, the sound quality is not as great as through a dedicated tape deck, so you are way better off with a DAP and some FLAC files, rendering the existence of cassettes pointless.

Meanwhile, the big boys went to vinyl for fidelity. You can walk into almost any store that deals with electronics and buy a decent starter turntable like the Audio Technica LP60 for $140. Plus the artwork and liner notes are nice to look at. You can show off your impeccable taste. It's great.

As for the album I haven't listened to it yet, but I'll assume it's okay but not great like everything he's churned out post-Kiss Land.

unpopular opinion but the weeknd was so much better when he dropped the trilogy mixtapes and you didn't really know who the guy behind the lyyrics was. now that he's a pop star putting himself on all the covers and in the middle of his music, both his music suffered and he became kinda unlikable. i liked a couple songs from starboy and kissland and after that i kinda stopped listening to him.

He's now a 31-year-old multi millionaire. It would be ridiculous if he released the same music he made ten years ago about being homeless.

Well now I know what I’ll be spending this glorious Sunday listening to! I hope there are at least a few gems in there.
