Maybe not anymore, it is debatable that the lore was misunderstood or lost in more recent years, but surely we have evidence in the NES games:

-He talks to mushroom people. Mushrooms are not big. Mushrooms are mostly in the forest, where gnomes are.
-He eats mushrooms and flowers, which are nearly as big as him.
-He fits down a sewer pipe.
-He climbs up vines, which are huge to him.
-He picks radishes out of the ground, which are nearly as big as him.
-He gets chased by a mask, obviously intended for a face, but it is as big as him.
-He swims by what look like common goldfish and squid and they are as big as him.
-Moles are as big as him.
-He fits in a boot.
-He obviously deals with magical powers, which gnomes are known for doing.

By extension:
-Bowser must be a normal sized tortoise.
-Donkey Kong must be a normal size monkey.

An Italian gnome. Clearly there will be regional differences, as with all things. However the Italians don't have robust gnome mythos so unfortunately we had no way of knowing what to expect and perhaps identify. We have to rely on Mario to educate us about the adventures of his people.
