There is a problem with the disc you are using. It may be dirty or damaged.

I hate my Xbox. I can't play a game for more than 10 minutes now without getting that stupid message. Used to happen infrequently, now you can set your watch to it.

Boil your disc for 25 seconds and see if that helps.

I'm not kidding. Especially if it's only happening on a couple of games.

I have had the same problem, but it usually actually is that my brother or dad but a big honkin' fingerprint on the damn disk.

This is the correct diagnosis. The optimal remedy is to purchase a console with the "Nintendo" brand, which will immediately alleviate the problem by eliminating the existence of those new discs you keep feeling compelled to insert in your system.

Fun fact: my 3-year old PS2 reads everything and never locked up while my 2-year old Cube locked up 2 times (Prime and Sunshine).

If I made a shirt that said: "There is a problem with the dick that you are using. It may be dirty or damaged." Would you buy it?

I know you might be against it, but: get a new Xbox, mod it, get yourself a big hdd, and forget all your troubles and loading times...

I feel for you, Ferrarisimo. I have a launch XBox that did that sporadically.
Finally on Labor Day when I'm off of work and want to play some games, it wouldn't load anything but music CDs. ("Rip Music to Hard Drive?" NO! Play games, dammit!)

So I call MS, and they are "repairing" it under warranty, even though it's four years old. Give 'em a call. This would be a really bad time for them to have negative press, as the 360 launch looms, so they may be pretty amenable to helping you out. It cost like 20 bucks to package and ship it with insurance. Better than spending 149 on a new one.

Good luck!
