Any reccomendations for a set of bedroom speakers GAF?
I'm looking somewhere in the range of $100-300, and I'll be using them mainly for gaming.

To Megadrive and Husker86: Thanks for the feedback :)

One last question thought just for clarification: All the Control Panel Items are installed in the Program Files folder, then?

Dude, where is your avatar from? Every time I see your post, I keep staring at it for long periods of time.

It's Yuri from SNSD. Korean pop group/sexbot harbingers.

on-stage underboob doesn't count.

I've got some for you guys. It involves Windows 7 and Mac OS X. Forgive my lack of knowledge on the Windows front; I've been a Mac user for about 8 years now and want to switch back, but I have many questions before I do:

1. Control Panel vs. System Preferences (where exactly IS Control Panel?) Why are there applications in Program Files AND the Control Panel(like Sync Center and Default Programs)? This drives me absolutely bonkers. In OSX, at least to my knowledge, all the items in System Preferences are only accessible from System Preferences (without searching, that is). What's up with that? Not to mention that "shortcut" in the Start Menu...

2. Installing and Uninstalling on both platforms... OSX: Just drag the app to the Trash (but what about other files and folders?! But is that really all?) Win7: I can't just drag them to the Recycle Bin? Why not? Must I use Programs & Features application (found in Control Panel...what's that about?) to fully remove programs? Is that really all? Where do trace

3. What exactly is the difference between a Link and Shortcut in Windows 7? How does this differ from OSX's "alias" system?

4. Where exactly are applications/programs saved in Win7? For instance, are all Steam and Steam related files and folders and everything else having to do with the actual application stored in the Steam folder within Program Files? If so, how does this differ from OSX's method of just storing the app in the Applications Folder? Where does OSX store the rest of the files that an application might use/need? I've never really known.

5. How many items in the Start Menu can only be navigated to by actually using the Start Menu, if any? Where are their "real" locations?

6. Any other fundamental differences between the two operating systems I should understand? I'll probably have more questions in the future...

1. Think of the Control Panel as one application that has buttons to control all your system settings in Windows. It's not a "location" on your computer where software is installed it's simply a way to access all your important computer settings.

2. Like has been mentioned, Windows has a Registry... it's how the OS works and it does have its benefits (being able to tweak registry entries can allow you to change settings otherwise unavailable in the application itself)

3. A shortcut is a link to a file on your hard drive, usually to an game/application executable.

4. Programs are installed in their own respective folders in C:\Program Files\. As far as I understand Mac relies heavily on things called Libraries. When you open your Applications "folder" in Mac it's actually called a Library and each program you see in there isn't simply a shortcut or executable to open that program it's what Mac calls a "Package". If you select a program and Ctrl+Click it or look in the Action menu you'll see an option to "Show Package Contents" - THAT'S the actual folder for the application and it's located in your applications folder on your Mac HD inside your user folder possibly. Do it for iPhoto for example and you can browse through your photos in finder if you don't want to actually open iPhoto.

5. The Start Menu is just a bunch of shortcuts for quick easy access as well as a search box and the shut down/sleep button. The Program list in the Start menu for example is literally a folder on your hard drive (C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\) that just has a tons of shortcuts in it. You can right click "All Programs" in Windows 7 and say Open to view it if you want... there's never really a reason to though.

This is driving me crazy...

I have a Dell Latitude D820 laptop with a 512mb Nvidia Quadro 120m NVS Gpu.

It originally came installed with Windows XP but I recently upgraded to 64bit Windows 7 Pro. Now my Gpu doesn't work.
I've checked the official Nvidia site and there are no drivers for Windows 7 (or anything else, actually). The same is true for the Dell website.

Some Googling led me to some hacked drivers, but even those don't work.

I don't use it for games, so it's not too big of a deal, but I can't even watch videos on the machine. Streaming lasts for about 10 minutes before the video becomes choppy and unwatchable, and the same is true for playing anything in various media players.

Anybody have any ideas?

Does anyone else use a towel during showering? I use it to dry my face and clear water out of my eyes, and sometimes to quickstart the hairdrying process...

:/

How do I lower the filesize of pictures? Took a bunch of pictures for a project that I have to submit online. Problem is that I will include 15, but each one is like 1.5mb, so its around 20mb. Not a big deal, I know, but he has around 110 students, and the pictures dont have to be THAT high quality.

Use a smaller image format. If they're bitmap, try PNG, if they're PNG go down to JPG.

Hmm, they are already jpg. Took pictures today at 3 megapixel and fine quality. I cant retake them.
You can use higher compression rates or you can resize the images. If they're physically bigger than you need, that'll save a lot of space.

Ahh gotcha, was unfamiliar with the word outside the web context. Thanks.
I actually hate the word now for this very reason. I first learned it in a highschool AP psychology class, and now it seems to just be associated with standard intererwebs dumbfuckery.

Water in/on my eyes = kryptonite. Right after I wash my face I immediately reach for the towel to dry my face off.

Crying obviously is not under this umbrella.

By default, yes. You can change this on install however.

Hey guys,

I am looking to do a training video for some customers on a piece of software we use. I need to do a video screen capture of a step-by-step procedure on the software. I have tried a few free programs (CamStudio, Easy Screen Capture Video, etc.) but they all yield videos with low framerates, even on my computer at home that is fairly high-end. I also tried using Fraps, but it only records the display in the window, and I need the programs taskbar and to record the mouse movements as well.

I would prefer a free program of course, but am also willing to pay if necessary. Any ideas?

Normally I would say your card just DOES NOT work with Windows 7, but in this case, I would try installing 32-bit instead of 64-bit (if you have the option) and see what happens. The hacked drivers might work better with a 32-bit OS on such an old graphics card.

So for the first time in awhile I just cleared my history/cache/cookies etc in Firefox. Before Youtube worked fine but now it takes forever to load videos. Did I do something wrong and is there a way to get the videos to load at a reasonable/normal speed again?

Download the driver and modified INF file found here at laptopvideo2go.com.

Run the self-extracting driver executable to extract it to a folder. Then copy the modified INF file into the 'Display.Driver' sub-folder, overwriting the existing INF. Then run setup.exe in the main folder.

Should install without issues, been doing this with my D620 with the NVS 110m since the Win7 RC (currently on 64-bit Home Premium).

Does the Droid have to have a cradle for the GPS to work in the car? So if I'm just riding with it on my dash board does it still give accurate readings? How does it know I'm driving?

It's self aware.

Most modern cell-phones use gps radio signals or cell phone towers to find their position. I found it to be as accurate as my TomTom.

GAF, you know how the most euphonious phrase in the English language is supposed to be "cellar door"?

I've decided that I'll collect recordings of people saying that phrase, and eventually put them up somewhere. Can you guys post records yourself saying it? It'd be also nice if you also recorded yourself (in a separate recording) of saying the equivalent phrase in any other languages you know.

Edit: Oh yeah, it'd also be handy if you mentioned your native language and accent or general location if you don't know what kind of accent you have.

I'm certain I don't want to make a thread for this. How difficult is it to learn elementary level kanji comprehension? My university offers Japanese language classes & I was wondering. Truth be told I want to learn just to be able to stay current with my favorite ongoing manga series.

Oh, it's not as hard as you think. Get this book. A few snippets of the book are available for preview here.

Trust me, it's one of the most useful books you can get.
