Thoughts on Bouncer for PS2

I told a friend I thought Bouncer for PS2 was one of the worst and most over-hyped games for PS2 and he was in shock. He loves it.

What do you guys think?

I have a friend like that too, thing is the guy is gay(for real), a total square nut and he digs the character designs.

I myself kind of liked that chick, Enchilada or whatever her name was. Pink dreads FTW

+1 That evil pink haired chick was hot.

Worst first-gen PS2 game ever!

I remember playing it years ago with my cousin. We started laughing uncontrollably when we had to take on a group of... are you ready for this... RENT-A-COPS. :lol

The game is total trash, but for some reason, I still played through it enough times to get all the characters to S rank. Why? I have no fucking clue.

Wasnt all of Square´s much hyped Dreamcast killing first gen PS2 line up pretty crap though?
We were blessed with The Bouncer(after numerous delays if I recall collectly) and other hyped to the high skies turds like Driving emotion type S and that Baseball game.

I hated that game. My little brother bought it and loved it though. I think I kicked his ass for that.

Hell maybe I should go back and remind him with another ass-kicking.

Supposedly, its as good as Ninja Gaiden.......

Most PlayStation 2 owners should remember Square's similarly over hyped The Bouncer. I'd almost go as far as proclaiming Ninja Gaiden to be the Xbox equivalent.

who the... what the... why the...

The Bouncer gets a lot more flak then it deserves. The game is a very average short beat-em-up that had a bunch of cutscenes featuring the most amazing real-time graphics ever seen at the time. It was very enjoyable to the graphic whores even if the gameplay was not. Sure the game doesn't hold up today when visuals have improved across the board, but for its time it was an ok release.

I got this for 10 dollars months back and I traded it away very quickly. The visuals were okay and they kept the Japanese vocals in there which is nice, but the gameplay was not very interesting at all.
The movements felt stiff and I was disappointed to find out I cannot grab objects around me and use them as weapons as was in the tech demo when it was first shown off.

i bought this game at Japanese launch and i posted here (think it was my first post) that the game was very very average.

I was nearly lynched by an angry virtual mob.

Jesus - that means i've been on here for about 5 years... eeek.

but hmmm... it was very average then , i'd be interested to know how it plays now. Might try it tonight.

I think it got a lot of flak because Square hyped it waaaay to much.

I remember talk about fully destructable environments, lots of intereaction with said environments, etc. It was one of the main points they were pimping iirc.

Of course it didn't deliver that in the slightest.

The Bouncer sucked. Driving Emotion was a disaster and the baseball game... :lol

That Ninja Gaiden quote was from a review on Gaming Age where the reviewer, using a fake name not connected to any one individual, gave Ninja Gaiden a score of C-, in order to create controversy to generate site hits.

Edit: It also caused Itagaki himself to basically tell Exxy to fuck off when he tried to get an interview, after stating he worked for Gaming Age.

the baseball game was pretty good - i played the ass out of it. What was wrong with it? The graphics were good, the game played fine if a touch clunky for base running, but... why are people laughing at it? it wasn't a disaster like the other two in terms of gameplay!

The Bouncer was just another failure for DF in terms of a fighting game. It was so bland and the story was as incoherrent as FF: Advent Children and just as stupid.

It looked real nice and had all sorts of fancy angle options... But so what if the game is a snorefest of an ordeal to play?

Squaresoft should have just ported Tobal 2 to the PS2 instead. It's gameplay is LEAGUES superiour. Also the best thing that Dream Factory ever did.

I didn't hate it.
Considering how many bad BEU's are around, even today, a competent one with nifty graphics scratched an itch I had, however temporaily. If the load times had been cleaned up, we would have had a contender here.

Here is the review I posted on the original Edge forums all those years ago.

I still play The Bouncer today, no other decent 4 player fighter appeared on the PS2 and as a straight forward Vs game it is good, solid fighter.

The other thing is The Bouncer was the first current gen title to have the whole experience points level structure that games like Devil may Cry adopted.

Signing my own DEATH WARRANT!

I know we are all entitles to our own opinions, but Â…

This is a pretty furious forum, fools are not suffered. The easily intimidated enter at their own risk. If you canÂ’t swim with the piranhaÂ’s donÂ’t get in the river, etc

So here goes Â…

I bought the Bouncer. I walked into EB and paid ÂŁ39. I had already rented the game so I knew what to expect. Am I crazy?

No. I think the game is a lot of fun. I enjoyed playing it. I thought the interactive movie was worth watching. I played the game all the way through and my wife wanted to join me just so that she could watch the movie.

I though the graphics were good. I though the sound was good. I thought the genuinely mad four player mode was excellent. IÂ’m still playing it and I am not bored.

I like this game more that Soul Blade, Tekken 3 or Dead or Alive. IÂ’m not much of a fight fan so that might explain it. I found the pace of the game very appealing. The thing most people complained about, fight, film, fight, film, I actually enjoyed.

The alternation between passive watching and short bursts of stimulation was really appealing. I found the controls intuitive, the level of difficulty acceptable. A game is only short when you donÂ’t want to play it. IÂ’ve spent more than 6 hours on the Bouncer since I bought it. I showed it to my brother last night and he was equally impressed. He joined me in a bout of heavy duty four player madness.

Criticisms. The game camera can be decidedly odd. There are regular occurrences where you canÂ’t see the enemy. ThatÂ’s it, my only criticism. I donÂ’t think the game is too short, in fact I think it is the perfect length for an interactive movie. I donÂ’t think the game lacks challenge. I adore the character designs. I find the story emotional involving. The experience reminded me of VagrantÂ’s Story. I liked the reward system and allocation of experience points.

I know it will not be to a lot of peoples tastes. It is not innovative. It is not a progression from other scrolling beat-em ups. It is decidedly old skool. All you do is button bash, no thought is involved. It is just like being back in the arcades. The game is incredibly shallow, but an immense amount of fun.

I had no expectations, I wasnÂ’t disappointed, I found the game to be a real blast.

So, kill me!

Dream Factory had to rush this game, that's why a few key features didn't make the cut, the most important one being interactive objects (being able to pick up tables, chairs, pipes,...).

I remember the first trailer having interactive objects... The game might have been a lot better if they had included this. Still, the art direction of this game was just plain horrible.

i think it would've been decent if the game just let you fight for several minutes at a time rather than farting cutscenes at you every second or three. the graphics really were amazing at the time, though.

It's okay though. Because everything that Bounced didn't deliver..... RYU GA GOTOKU (AKA YAKUZA) does! :D

I think I'm the most qualified person here to hate this game. My impulsive self here bought it for a MOTHERFRIGGIN 210 SGD (Approx 100 USD) when the JP version was first released. I wished GAF existed back then...because I bought the game expecting fully interactive enviroments ala the demo. WTF.

Nonetheless, I completed this game about 8/9 times in 3 days to get the most out of this piece of shit. It also shows how bloody short this game is. I couldn't believe that I used my christmas money on this game when I could have easily bought 2 copies of Winback instead.

GAF did exist back then
i bought it the day it came out
and i posted my thoughts (AVOID AVOID AVOID)

although i didn't pay anything near 100 USD!

The funniest thing about the Bouncer is that IMO Rise to Honor features a decent amt of the environmental interaction that the Bouncer was suppose to feature.

I agree with his opinion, really :)

I also loved Driving Emotion Type-S, interior view was the best! driving was unnecessarily difficult to master, but when you did it, it was really gratifying

Of all the problems I had with The Bouncer, the one that still stands out most to me is the sound effects - there was one impact sound. For a game where you literally do nothing but punch, kick and throw people from beginning to end, there's one freaking impact sound effect, and it's not even a good one. My ears couldn't take the repetition after ten minutes.

Like most things, somewhere in the middle. Average beat 'em up with good production values. The huge hype though caused a massive backlash that leads to things like "worst first-gen PS2 game", which I think is a bit of an overstatement. You could argue the backlash is warranted though, although I don't know if you blame Square or the media for that.
