Thoughts on Bouncer for PS2

Its what happens when Square tries to make a game that's not a RPG.

Its too bad Dream Factory lost a lot of talent before they worked on The Bouncer, as the Dream Factory that worked on Tobal No. 2 was great, its still one of the best fighters ever.

From that linked review:

Wow, talk about your Emotion Engine! Mine is running high because of the visuals I'm witnessing here, I could swear that Dream Factory has used the same technology that created Toy Story, and have implemented it on the PS2. These visuals blow any game out of the water, and I mean 'any' game, be it Shenmue, some PC title, or anything else that you can think of, this game would steal the visual sector hands down. When I popped the DVD disk into the tray, I knew I was going to be greeted with some friendly artistic visuals, but I got a whole more than that. First of all not only is the games character detail so high that you couldn't help but think it was an FMV or CG of some sort

:lol :lol :lol :lol

"Those who will purchase The Bouncer this coming March in the US better not wine and moan because of its short story mode, after all you better remember the fact that it is a "cinematic adventure". The word 'cinematic' is of course deprived from the word "cinema" which is defined as: 'a motion picture'. And there you have it folks, The Bouncer is in other words an interactive movie."

Oh, Alpha :lol

Square did do one thing right when it came to the game. They had jap as well as eng dub.

But, like most of you guys already said, there's a reason why Square is synonymous with rpgs and not beat 'em up/brawlers ^_~

EINHANDER DAMMNIT!! If more people had bought this awesome game they would be synonymous with Shooters as well.

Bouncer was a dissappointment though. I was excited for it until the reviews started pouring in and then rented it thankfully. Thank god for FFX.

The game is a very average short beat-em-up that had a bunch of cutscenes featuring the most amazing real-time graphics ever seen at the time.
This is correct.

It was a very average game with a lot of problems. Pitted against the DC lineup, it failed on the gameplay front, but it did demonstrate that the PS2 could produce visuals beyond anything the DC had seen (at 60 fps, no less). I actually managed to have some fun with it, though that could be simply due to the fact that I did not fall into the hype (pretty much trashed the PS2 up until early 2001 in favor of the DC).

Thankfully, the second of half of 2001 actually delivered some of the best games this gen...

A mediocore game, plain and simple, good graphics, mediocore gameplay.
Good character designs (as Nomura usually does) and good vs nattle as mentioned.

But that covers it, but did give Nomura a chance to stand on his own though, first step for him before KH...

Was an official blame ever pinned on anyone for The Bouncer losing much of the gameplay features that were initially touted?

I just brushed the game off as a $50 tech demo (the whole thing just seemed really experimental for some reason to me, probably because Square was in a transition period from PS1 to PS2 development)
