Publisher Kodansha and Japan-headquartered animation company Production I.G are working on a new animated production based on the classic Ghost in the Shell manga.

It will be co-directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed).

Also this week, Production I.G — whose animation credits includes Ghost in the Shell, Miss Hokusai and A Letter to Momo — announced the promotion of Maki Terashima-Furuta to the role of president of Production I.G. USA.

Terashima-Furuta founded the U.S. subsidiary of Production I.G. in 1997 and has served as vice president, during which time she has overseen development, production and distribution of the company’s projects.

She also served as co-producer on Paramount and DreamWorks' recent feature Ghost in the Shell, which is also based on the manga.

Blame reviews if old.

If Major isn't white in this, I'll honestly boycott.

I've grown so used to Scarjo's life changing performance that I can't go back.

Any other depiction is simply inferior now

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Is this based on that ScarJo movie that just came out?

Really cool. I'm looking forward to seeing how they can build on ScarJo's performance as Major.

Please recast Mary Elizabeth McGlynn this time for the dub.

Arise was just not the same without her voicing the Major. Even worse was the fact that she still had a role, just as a different character!

Is this something to get excited over? What are Kamiyama's + Aramaki's track records beside SAC and Appleseed?

Kamiyama was the director of SAC so that at least has me excited. I never got around to finishing Eden of the East which was another anime he directed but I liked the few episodes I saw.

This is gonna be like Dragonball where the one good thing about the live-action Hollywood movie is that it causes the Japanese rights holders to revive their version of the IP out of spite.

Honest question, would the hardcore fans who refused to even see the new film have a problem with Scarlett doing the English dub? She actually is a good voice actress, all snark aside.

Not that I think they'd pony up the cash to do it, but I'd still be curious about the possibility.

Mary Elizabeth McGlynn IS The Major to me as SAC was my first exposure to Ghost in the Shell AND IS STILL the golden standard for GiTS. I've been trying to get into Arise but it's just not the same. :(

Well if it were in the SAC continuity, or even in the main films continuity, then that'd mean that Mary Elizabeth McGlynn would have lost the role. And she is the Major to me.

Not that I minded ScarJo's performance.

Ah, I've only seen the two anime GitS films. I figure SAC is worth checking out if I liked them both (and the live action film)?

Also, does anyone know why Ghost in the Shell 2.0 exists? I recently came across it and it's a fucked up abomination that replaces shit in the original with some of the worst cgi I've ever seen.

Yes because Mary Elizabeth McGlynn was perfect as Motoko Kusanagi. Literally anyone else is a downgrade. It would be like Cowboy Bebop without Steve Blum as Spike.

SAC is by far the best thing to ever come out of the IP.

Reminds me of the fact that I have watched only first and the second movies. Have not been able to watch Stand Alone Complex etc

Aramaki is a CG director who does bombastic action blockbusters with boring direction. His stuff all kinda feels the same after a while no matter what big franchise he's tackling. His CG short for the Halo Legends anthology was the one with the biggest budget and was the most boring of the lot.

For sure. SAC is my favourite part of the franchise, honestly. It has stand alone cyberpunk police procedural episodes and series long complex arcs, character development and world building. It's slightly less philosophical than the movies, but tends to deal with social issues arising from the increasing connectivity and cyberization in society. Also lots of exciting action.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0 is a weird one. Maybe they thought it'd be a good test bed for their CGI skills, and they may as well make some money out of that.

Based on the directors, I'm guessing this will be CG. I guess I'd be cool with that if it looks like the 009 movie.

The one good thing about the live-action Ghost in the Shell movie was the live-action Ghost in the Shell movie.

Well im excited but for me GiTs is a franchise of diminishing returns so hopefully this will buck the trend.

On the one hand, I really love SAC and Moribito was another top-notch project from Kamiyama, so I'm fine with him. On the other hand, I watched Appleseed Alpha and wasn't especially impressed, so Aramaki can fuck off. And on a third, cyborg hand, I honestly thought Production I.G.'s attempt to translate Shirow's art to 3D with Appleseed XIII didn't turn out that well.

Conclusion: I am conflicted by this news.

Kamiyama back on GitS is too good to be true.

There has to be a catch.

EDIT: Well hearing what you all think of Aramaki, I guess I have my answer.

Aramaki? Well, there it is. The catch.

Positively hyped for this, I hope it's SAC season 3.

Especially when you hear Mary Elizabeth McGlynn doing the voice of some other woman in Arise.

That just fucks with your head. Is the Major talking to the Major?
