Tim Cain (Creator of Fallout 1/2) Re-Joins Obsidian Games Full-Time.

Here are his recent contributions

Tyranny is S-Tier, The Outer Worlds is "I don't remember a single thing about this game that I played" tier.
Pillars is a good game as well. I don't understand why Obsidian can't translate their isometric games to 3d, it's like they are made by two different companies.

Its just really two complete different kind of games/genres. The isometric ones more like slow and tactical and 3D ones more like fast and action orientated.

Hopefully the writing will improve. I think Outer Worlds 2 was much than better than Avowed and the first OW but they are still not as good as they used to

Yeah, but it's not just that. The writing, the voice acting, the story are all significantly better in the isometric games. It's like Obsidian goes full middle school mode whenever they make their bigger budget games.

I'm nearing the end of Outer Worlds 2. It is indeed a better game than the first but the writing in this game is, odd, As if an alien is using AI prompts to generate dialog.
I would welcome an old human being with pencil, paper, or even a typewriter.

This is good news. Bring back more of the old guard! - Dont let the DEI hires over power them!

Outer worlds 2 is legit great, and will be in my top 5 GOTY for sure.

Yeah, but this writing problem you have nearly everywhere. I blame all this woke/DEI nonsense which is immensely restricting itself via language and self imposed prohibitions of free thoughts and speech. This way you always end up with middle school level writing. Anything else is just not possible anymore under this restrictive guidelines.

And then out of nowhere Pentiment is their best written game. Seems they need to focus on making things they are truly inspired to make.

Mixed feelings about him. Some of the stuff he worked on like Fallout 1, 2 and Arcanum are absolute gems. Other stuff that he worked on or even directed like The Outer Worlds 1 were mid at best.

If they need an actual good writer and game designer, they should apologize to Chris Avellone and get him back.

I guess now they have someone who can write back. Hopefully this will be better vs the slop they have been doing.
He's no writer, he's a programmer. He has written before, but it didn't turn out great, so he'll be the first to tell you it's not his strong suit. Also, as much as I love the guy, I don't see this changing anything for Obsidian. I'd love to be wrong though, suppose we'll see. If they could get Avellone back too, then I think we'd be much more than solidly "back", but that's just pie in the sky hopes :/.

A Chris Avellone return to Obsidian and a Jeremey Soule return to Elder Scrolls would be the biggest PR Ws of all time.

More specifically Tyranny is an incredibly mediocre game with an intriguing setting.
Yeah, the setting was good and its one of these very rare RPG's where i could cook my own spells. (i only know of Oblivion who did that as well) I love that shit!

Not sure how much a single guy can contribute to a studio that isn't the size of let's say ten people.

I enjoyed TOW2 gameplay-wise and finished it (which is to say already quite the achievement in my books) but the world, quests, characters were forgettable and nothing's intrigued me to explore beyond what is absoluetely necessary. Skill checks alone at every corner doesn't make a good cRPG.

It's a shame they don't really make games like Fallout 1 & 2 any more these days. Not only that they are reeeally good at being cRPGs but also in having a lore that is exhaustive but also leaves room for mysteries; dialogues that won't go on forever but are concise and sharp. And of course the "politicalness" of these games in which you can kill children or get drugged and raped by a creep if you lack any intelligence is really something else but suits the world the game is set in.

New Blood Interactive got you covered (some ex-Interplay dudes are working there as well):

And then there's Underrail 2, of course, but one can argue about how much Underrail 1 is like Fallout 1 & 2 or not. Underrail's focus is much more on the build autism than the "RPG side" in comparison, imho.

Thanks! We'll see if this will ever the see the light of day but Dusk, as I see was also by New Blood Interactive, was an amazing shooter. If they make RPGs like they did Dusk, it's gonna be great.

I found the RPG part of Underrail 1 rather weak. Hope they will shift the focus for part two.

My guess is people hold FPS to shooter standards, whereas isometric to RPG standards. Obsidian knows how to make RPGs, not shooters.

Fuck man, Soule returning would be an absolute megaton. We can dream brother.
I hope Todd and Bethesda realize that part of what made Skyrim (and Oblivion and Morrowind) so big was the fucking soundtrack. Soule was the perfect fit for these games. Very much like Mick Gordon was the perfect fit for the nu-Doom games, as can be seen by how lackluster the soundtrack in The Dark Ages was.

Microsoft would never in a million years take Avelone back because of those (completely disproven) accusations. All it takes is the scarlet letter for these dirtbags. Plus, we don't want to wish that on Chris. He deserves better than to swim in that decrepit pool of knuckle hair and nail polish. (imagine the smell).

id say next impossible while feargus is there, they broke up in a pretty toxic way from what i remember.
avellone still likes to do obsidian digs on social media to this day.
