My guess as also a short term solo player is the key to fun is grouping. Playing alone was an absolute chore 'n bore imo.

Slow start since the game I feel opens up once you level up and get more mods on your weapons and of course unlock new main and sub weapons for each class.

Resources are plentiful (imo) so you can easily buy all of them as you go, the biggest progression blocker will be not having stuff unlocked so just focus on doing the assigments and upgrade whatever is possible, prioritize unlocking higher difficulties and weapons you use. Picking and choosing is pretty much only a thing when it comes to skills, cosmetics and cores.
Once youll be able to do deep dives you should know what to do at that point.

So, next to the drop pod there is a computer looking device called the assignment board. Do the first assignment that it automatically puts you on. It basically just is a bunch of mission types in succession that is supposed to be a tutorial for the various types. You get a lot of materials and money to get you started by doing this assignment. Also, try not to fall into the trap of sticking to one class. They're all fun in their own way and have pretty different playstyles for a game that ultimately revolves around "shoot bugs". Also press V.

Ok, I understand how that works now. Thanks. The missions on the map screen are part of the assignment.

Its kind of like a "prestige" system in Call of Duty (if its still a thing there). Once you complete the promotion assignment which is same as the others, itll resets some progression for 1 class, you should definitely do it once since it unlocks stuff the first time, but after that its just for bragging and a statue in the memorial hall unless they added some new benefit since ive last played.

I havent played in a couple seasons but I've put in around 500 hours in the game.
#1 thing to learn is how to read the map. It's confusing for new players because it's 3d but eventually you'll learn how to figure out how to see depth and side tunnels by rotating it.
#2 is to always look up especially around corners, there are always cave leeches lurking.
#3 is, there are terminals that you can't access until you promote a dwarf (level 25 + a 3 part mission). Don't worry about them, thats end game stuff.
*E also: I'm assuming you're playing this on console, both consoles have kb+m support and imo it is a much much better experience on kbm as many weapons are balanced around hitting weak spots. If you do insist on controller i believe the quick turn button is r3 but it's been a while so i could be misremembering
