Not to be the voice of dissent, but if someone is actually sick, then I think it's an outstanding idea NOT to come into work and infect the entire office. Yes, it's a pain in the ass to have to work extra or cover someone who is missing, but I'll take that option over running a fever or coughing for weeks any day.

True, if they are really really sick, then please do not come. But come on, some people I just *know* they are lying! These 1-day mystery illnesses that always seem to happen on a Friday (today...) or when the weather is bad (bingo again).

Today, I am willing to bet the prick in question got up, decided not to come to work, so he calls me and says his apartment is leaking to get out of work. To make it worse, on the phone he was like "OMG Did you just hear that? My paint is coming off". WTF. So now I have to do all his work.

why do you have to do all his work? just let it set there so he has double to do when he gets back. I mean you have your own shit to do and you showed up for work today, he's the one that shoud have to make up for the day he missed, not you.

His work is due to the client today, so it has to be done. :\

then make your boss do it, I fail to see how it's your responsibility, but then I don't work with you.

That's just it, the boss is out today as well (why I think he called out). So that leaves me in charge.

I've never missed a day of work. Ever.

I'm a modern day Cal Ripken.

Cal Ripken had some horrid slumps where he really SHOULD have sat out but hurt the team with his crappy play just to keep the streak going. This means, sick days are good sometimes.

Me neither, although on two occasions I wished I did. One time I had food poisoning, the other I caught a vicious cold. I was useless and felt miserable.

Unless it's a small office or it's something that only the boss can do, it's usually trickled down to the workers. Management's either tied up in their own affairs, or would simply rather delegate the work to others than do it themselves.

Once we had a terrible backup in our bathtub - overnight the tub OVERFLOWED with all the shit ppl in the upper floors would toss in the kitchen or bathroom sink so the floor of the bathroom was covered in water and bits of old food and stuff like that. It was a scummy yellowy-brown water with coffee grounds, soap suds and pieces of recognizable food floating in it (oh hey, someone upstairs didn't eat all their ravioli) and even after trying to plunger the tub it wouldn't drain. I called in sick because I had to clean it and of course I couldn't shower anyway but I felt so stupid about the reason that I just said I had the flu. :lol

You god damn right! Man, all these sickies need to stay home...

I had a guy call in sick, he sounded awful on the phone, no problem take it easy and rest. So I go to meet a client downtown for lunch, and this prick is romancing some chick two tables down from me. I mean, c'mon, if you call in sick, try to stay out of the public eye...The look on his face when he saw me come in was priceless though, he got out so fast and we never saw him again...He did come in to get his last check. The best part, I get a call from someone two months later after he put my name down for a reference, I mean, how clueless can some people be?

My advice, if you're sick, stay home.

If you want a day off, just try to plan it ahead.

If you're faking it, you better be good but stay out of the public places that you can be seen. Also, try to be sensitive to your co-workers. If you can pick up where you left off, no big deal, but if like the poster you know someone else will be stuck doing your work, then shame on you. I can tell you from personal experience, over 70% of the sick calls I get from my people are fake, but it's part of life and as long as the policy is not abused, I let it slide.

I have had to call in sick during the summer once because my eyes were bothering so much, that I was a hazard to drive. I could see inside under lowlight, but it was a cloudless day, and my eyes reacted so bad that I couldn't keep them open. So I thought dying on a freeway isn't that great, I am gonna have to stay in.

This is a big problem at my job. Certain people tend to call in sick like every week, then we have to handle their workload. Then or dumbass manger is all "why do you have overtime bullshit"

I just love how as you answer the phone, they just happen to make this big whooping cough trying to confirm their sickness...

GEE BUDDY YA REALLY DONT SOUND TOO GOOD OVA THAR

Blame bosses who staff their businesses so scantily. Creating profit via understaffing is not a good business model.

Call a freakin' temp, then.

I don't abuse my sick days, but I'm honestly sick often, and tend to use more than what's alotted to me. But, since my last hospitalization (Nov) I've been doing much to improve my sleeping routines, diet, and overall health. Even taking vitamins now. Wow. I've been doing much better this year so far. Not perfect, but better.

I hate calling out and planting folks with my work, but I'm part of a team of 3, so we can usually work things out fairly well.

I love it when others call in sick, it means I can have their hours on double pay, or triple pay on weekends. That's why I have a stock of viruses (virii?) in my bathroom cabinet. Heh heh heh.
