today I learned typing 'lol' in texts is a millennial thing

someone told me today that me using lol at the end of text messages is a millennial thing

I didn't realize that. do you use lol in texts often? and if so, are you a millennial?

I heard some lady say the letters "l o l" out loud in conversation with someone else on the train like 5 years ago and decided right then and there to never use it again in any way

Why wouldnt it be? Its not a zoomer thing and boomers barely know how to use a smart phone
hate to be the one to break this to you, but there are many other generations that are even younger than millenials

they don't use it, or at least that is what I was told. which is literally what this thread is about.

that's whack lmao

true story, the first time I saw "LOL" used by David Bowie posting a cringe update on the old davidbowie.com circa late 90s... and I didn't have any idea what it meant

My last company, the younglings found the use of emojis in Slack messages as too aggressive and offensive if the wrong skin tone was selected.

Lol
emoji skin tone is so stupid... the orangish-yellowish cartoon color of default ones is not meant to be any particular race, and was always considered universal before

Nothing makes me skip a slack message faster than seeing someone pick race-specific emojis

I don't type it often, but i do it sometimes. But what i have never typed even once in my life is XD. Never. Not even once. Always found it to be bitch made.

I'm technically a millennial and turning 40 this year. We're old news, we have 2-3 new generations in the world now (and they are each worse than the previous)

Lol

Surely just about everyone must find the use of any emojis about as aggressive and threatening as a trip to the spa.

Think about some pleb on twitter reacting to news about some terrorist attack/political or financial scandal and they're like ''my blood is boiling right now''. 🤬😡🤬😡🤬😡🤬

Shut up and finish your coffee break at the canteen Sheila.

I'm not surprised. If you can convey the same thing through a single visual icon it makes sense for it to become the default. I don't use lol as much as I used to.

There is also a slight perception difference, I think. If you get "lol" as a sole response it's easy to see that as dismissive/disinterested.

You also have so many emojis to choose from that it's easier to be more nuanced with your choice.

There are just so many great and useful emojis now beyond the modernised smileys, too

I know a guy that just "hahas". Seems more sincere for some reason. Or a weirdo.

Different skin tone emoji is daft for the reasons mentioned above.

And people crying over aggressive emoji. Geez. Bet that company is on the ERG fuel I.e. media, usually.

I still like to use these: :-) :-P :-/ :-( etc in emails.

Absolutely hate it when they're automatically converted to emoticon smileys,

F**K, the forum software also converts these automatically to emoticons ...
