today I learned typing 'lol' in texts is a millennial thing

What happened to that short period of time when people put a number after lol to show the intensity of the lol.
Like lol6

I use lol, lmao, hahaha, lololol and that's about it, only when I can't be bothered use an emoji. I'm a millennial.

I still like to use these: :-) :-P :-/ :-( etc in emails.

Absolutely hate it when they're automatically converted to emoticon smileys,

--- edit

F**K, the forum software also converts these automatically to emoticons ...
It's weird in 2025 when people self censor the word fuck on the Internet

I use "roflcopter" to indicate laughter. And, of course, OMGWTFBBQ to express my surprise or confusion.

Does that mean you're a card carrying member of the LGBTWTFBBQ+ community?

i use it constantly just so people know im not being serious...i cant help it, its habit from like 15 years of texting. Im 37

Gen X here. I occasionally use lol - in like "hello, fellow kids" fashion, when I feel like appeal to kids, as the whole abbreviation thing is so... youngster thing!
I'm more of old school : ) or : D or ; ) person from usenet days... d(^_^)b

But at least I do not say LOL out. I know some kids do!

I'm old. But I just use smiling faces now. Texts and message. It cool and fine. But man, when ppl use to talk spelling it out like that. It was weird and it wasn't just that. It was everything they would do like that.

No, because I'm not a cunt and and also because rather than using a Nokia 3310 I have a phone that makes use of a full QWERTY keyboard so I don't need dozens of button presses to type a word. I also tend to ignore messages from people that use text speak. If I need to show my humour I'll use haha or bahaha if I'm laughing at something that normal people generally wouldn't.

Lel, lol and lul are actual words i my language
Lel = old school way for "to hit (someone)"
Lol = fun
Lul = dick (as in calling someone a dick)
