Tomb Raider Legend - new video?

yeah, so far the mechanics are looking pretty nice. As long as it's not too repetitive, the story is engaging and she learns new abilities and gains new weapons, it should be fun.

Looks alright.

Appears to have retained the tank controls, in fact from the video the control just looks sluggish. Hopefully they've done away with that atrocious grip meter.

Anyway, after AoD I'll definitely take a wait and see attitude on this one.

on second view there is a certain floaty-ness to lara, maybe there's some helium in her assets ;)

the scale of the game is still impressive.

"Retained"? Angel of Darkness on the PS2 did away with the tank controls.

I have to watch this video, but according to the CD guys at E3, the game has taken on an entirely different (and much more responsive) control scheme.

Edit - watched it. That most certainly does not use tank controls. If you really need proof, go to 1:50 in the video. Notice what happens when she is on the platform. Along with that, you can tell just by the way Lara slightly changes directions when starting to move forward. There is no rotation there.

Oh. I didn't understand the technical meaning behind 'tank controls'. Maybe I should've said 'Buick-like' controls', since AoD was far from responsive.

I'll take your word for it.

Tank controls mean that pushing left or right will rotate your character left or right. Pressing up will send your character forward and holding down will cause them to walk backwards.

What we have here is a game that will send the character in the direction you push. If you push left, your character will run in that direction, for example.

AoD's controls weren't too bad. They were unresponsive, but the button that prevented your from falling off of ledges kept them working well enough. The PC version featured tank controls, though.

Tank controls were not TR biggest problem, the ancient grid system was. Fortunatelly they got rid of it for the new game.

The grid was also removed from AoD.

The game really wasn't that bad, once you got into it. It was simply rather buggy and somewhat unfinished.

The grid was there, it was pretty noticeable when climbing. And the game was trashy, I had high hopes for it but it was mangled and badly directed.

No, it really was not...which actually created some new problems at various points.

Which version did you play BTW?

I played both, but I actually finished the PC one.

I finished the PS2 version, but I also played both.

The grid wasn't present during on foot movement. You could always vary your position for starting a jump and that position was not based on a grid. If there actually was any sort of grid present, it was very loose in comparison to the older games.

I seriously believe that the grid was there, only that "better" done than in previous incarnations. I nearly went mad playing certain jump stages.

This looks very nice, but the animation is kinda underwhelming compared to some recent (and not so recent games). The way she's grabbing ledges and jumps from stick to stick is especially a bit jarring. I like how everything looks nice and rich though,

This video was released around E3 but was quickly removed from most sites. I dunno why Eidos released it considering it looks like it came from an older build than what was shown at E3. Click on E3 2005 Live Stage Demo at Gamespot for video that looks like it came from a more recent build. I'm assuming it's a different build since most of the 'jankiness' and glitches from the first video are gone and the animation looks better.

I remember the grid being in AoD as well, but not so much for movement as for the climbing. Maybe it'd be more accurate to say that they kept the same basic building blocks in AoD.

Tank controls are definitely gone here, 'bout damn time.

The shown combat looks retarded.

If they'd just come out an admit that they were going to rip off Prince hardcore, I'd actually be very relieved.

I think it was there. I remember begin clearly deceived by the controls and feel of Lara (well, on the PS2) as it was almost as shitty as before.

...

The games jumping and hanging on to edges is horrible.. she just kinda floats onto edges and climbs through.. its like there were some collision issues.. I know Prince of Persia never had these issues or anything on its jump parts.. or even bloodrayne 2

=[ Unsatisfied.

As I mentioned earlier, this is from a really old build that was 'mistakenly' released. Apparently Eidos has asked that the video be taken down. Check out the E3 video at Gamespot from my previous post for a more accurate look at the game. Almost all of those clipping problems are gone. The jumping animation among other things also appears to be different.
