Here is a working MMC-5 draft of optical disk tech, including Blu-ray

http://www.t10.org/ftp/t10/drafts/mmc5/mmc5r01b.pdf

Read pages 97-118 and geek out to all the Blu-ray specs you could ever want or need

Some other pages worth reading:

Page 199:BD-R Psudo Over Write feature (POW)

Page 202:BD Read feature

Page 204:BD Write feature

Page 248:Profile 0040h BD-ROM

Page 249:Profile 0041h BD-R Sequential Recording (SRM) Profile

Page 251:Profile 0042h BD-R Random Recording (RRM) Profile

Page 253:Profile 0043h BD-RE

There is even more stuff like BD read buffer commands, TOC infos and much, much more....you have to comb through the pdf. to find everything...

IMO, it is intresting and significant that although CD and DVD data is also included in this pdf., [which was submitted by the International Committee for Information Technology Standards(INCTIS)] HD-DVD is never mentioned at all, as if it doesnt even exist!!

The INCITS is in no way affiliated with the BRD group, BTW...

It seems the HD-DVD member group has been updated:

Amazing in my view..

So we know that HD-DVD and 1X BR-RE is 36mbps and 1X BD-ROM is 54mbps...

Lets compare this for what the DVD forum agreed was the bitrate allocation for first gen DVD, shall we?

133 minutes of content must fit on a DVD5 target disc (SingleSide/SingleLayer)

Max average bitrate of 4.69Mbps

For that 4.69Mbps bitrate, a sample bit breakdown would be:

3.50Mpbs average bitrate for MPEG2 video

3 AAC streams at 0.384Mbps each

0.040Mbps for subpicture data stream(s)

Compare these bitrates to the bitrates of the next gen optical formats and I think its easy to say we will be seeing a big jump in PQ, to say the least...

I saw that article yesterday regarding HVD. I think we'll have to hear alot more about the format before I make up my mind about it. But, of course, no we've got the trolls saying the Blu-Ray is merely a stop gap measure and holding out HVD as the true "next-gen" media storage.

There's absolutely no word on pricing, years until the consumer market, backwards compatibility, anything. And yet people are willing to throw Blu-Ray under the bus for it because it fits their particular agenda.

I don't understand how HD-DVD even stand a chance with only Toshiba and Sanyo (which is not widely distributed at all) and maybe RCA and General Electrics producing players. At say Circuit City, with 20 Blu-Ray players and 3 HD-DVD players, which is Joe sixpack gonna pick up?

Nearly every single company listed are optical media manufacturers. If you see Samsung here, it's just because Toshiba and Samsung have formed a joint venture for DVD-Recorders, but they both produce their own drives in the end.

And don't be afraid anyway of that vaporware of a menace, and CMC Magnetics is not nicknamed Cheaply Made Crap Magnetics for no reason. :lol
